Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Using your own degree subject in a stable bank job
  • Solving real problems for branches, farmers or staff
  • A clear pay scale and a path to promotion
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Transfers anywhere in India are possible, so you may live far from home
  • Competition is tough and the number of vacancies changes every year
  • Each post needs its own exact degree, so you cannot switch posts easily
Class 11–12 subjects
There is no Class 12 subject rule. Your degree decides the post. IT Officer usually needs an engineering or IT degree, so PCM in Class 12 helps. Agriculture Field Officer needs a four-year agriculture or allied degree. Law Officer needs a law degree, which you can start after Class 12 in any stream. HR and Marketing officers need a graduation plus a 2-year full-time postgraduate degree or diploma in that field. Rajbhasha Adhikari needs a Hindi-related postgraduate qualification (reported).
First degree
A relevant degree for the post you want. For example, B.E./B.Tech (IT officer), a four-year agriculture or allied degree, a law degree, or graduation plus a 2-year full-time MBA/PGDM or postgraduate degree in HR or marketing. The notice for CRP SPL-XVI checked your qualification as it stood on 21 July 2026, so the result had to be declared by then.
Entrance exams
IBPS Common Recruitment Process for Specialist Officers (CRP SPL): online Preliminary, online Main, then Interview. The latest cycle is CRP SPL-XVI, for vacancies of 2027-28.

What the work is like

Using your own subject inside a public sector bank. IT officers look after bank software, networks and security. Agriculture field officers help farmers with loans and rural schemes. Law officers handle legal papers and recovery cases. HR officers look after staff matters. Rajbhasha officers handle Hindi and official-language work. Marketing officers promote bank products. Postings can be anywhere in India (reported).

A day in the work
Say you are an IT Officer at a regional office. You begin by checking that the bank's systems and branch networks ran properly overnight. You then fix a problem a branch has reported and meet the team about a new software update. In the afternoon you review security alerts and write short reports for senior managers. A law or agriculture officer's day looks different but has the same shape: files, meetings, calls to branches and field or court visits when needed.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 10–12Decide which specialist post interests you. IT and agriculture need a science-based degree, law and Hindi are open to any stream, and HR and marketing come after a degree plus a 2-year postgraduate course. Pick your Class 11 stream and degree to match.
  2. Step 2 · College (3–5 years, plus 2 years for HR/Marketing)Finish the exact degree your chosen post asks for, at a recognised university. In the 2026 notice you had to be 20 to 30 years old on 1 July 2026, and your degree result had to be declared by 21 July 2026. Final-year students must wait until the result is out.
  3. Step 3 · Apply and PrelimsApply online on ibps.in in the July window (in 2026: 1 to 21 July, later extended). The online Preliminary test came next (held 29 August 2026, reported). Prelims marks only decide who gets into Mains (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  4. Step 4 · Main examThe online Main exam tests English, reasoning, banking awareness and, most important, Professional Knowledge of your subject. It also has a short descriptive paper. In 2026 the total was 225 marks in 155 minutes for most posts. The Main was scheduled for 1 November 2026 (reported).
  5. Step 5 · InterviewShortlisted candidates are called for an interview worth 100 marks, run by the participating banks. In 2026 it was planned for November–December. The final merit list uses Main and Interview marks in an 80:20 ratio (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · Document check and allotmentYour certificates are checked and you are provisionally allotted to a bank based on merit, category and the vacancies the banks report. For 2026 this was planned for January 2027.
  7. Step 7 · Joining and probationYou join as a Scale I officer. Banks usually have an induction, training and a probation period before you are confirmed. The details are set by each bank (reported). (reported — check with the official body)

What people earn

Official pay

Specialist Officer Scale I, basic pay ₹48,480 rising by fixed steps to ₹85,920 (scale 48480-2000/7-62480-2340/2-67160-2680/7-85920), plus allowances and perquisites as per each bank's rules (IBPS notification, 2026). This is a public sector bank post, not a central government pay-level job.

Pay starts on a fixed bank scale and grows with promotions and years of service, while take-home also depends on the bank, the city of posting and the allowances that apply there.

Myth and fact

Myth: Any graduate can become a bank Specialist Officer.
Fact: No. Each post needs a particular degree, such as an engineering degree for IT Officer or a law degree for Law Officer. The Main exam also tests deep knowledge of that subject, which makes it different from the PO exam.

For girls and students with disabilities

The 2026 notice gives a 10-year upper age relaxation to persons with benchmark disability and reserves posts for them. Candidates with visual impairment, locomotor disability or cerebral palsy get extra exam time (20 minutes for every hour, as set out in the notice). Check the notice for the full list of eligible disabilities and rules.

Good to know

  • Vacancies are called indicative in the notice. IBPS says banks hire based on business needs, so the numbers change from year to year and the final allotment uses the actual vacancies.
  • In CRP SPL-XVI (2026), IBPS first listed 745 vacancies. After its 20 July 2026 update, news and exam sites report about 1,035 (some report 1,043). Marketing Officer started with zero vacancies and gained a few later (reported).
  • IBPS runs this exam once a year, and the notice usually comes out in mid-year. Check ibps.in for the next cycle (CRP SPL-XVII). Each year's rules for age, fees and posts can change.
  • Age relaxation in the 2026 notice: 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC (non-creamy layer), 10 years for persons with benchmark disability, and other categories as listed in the notice.
