Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Seeing students grow over several years
  • Leading teachers and shaping how a school works
  • Variety: academics, people, budgets and safety in one day
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Long hours and constant interruptions
  • Pressure from parents, staff and management at the same time
  • Responsibility for results and safety, with limited say over budgets set by the management
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 in any stream (Arts, Science or Commerce). Then a 3-year bachelor's degree in the subject you want to teach. Many senior school posts also ask for a Master's degree. Marks matter at each step.
First degree
Bachelor's degree, then a Master's degree in your subject, then a B.Ed (2 years). After that, you need several years of teaching or administrative work before you can be considered for the top post.
Entrance exams
There is no single national exam for private school principals. B.Ed admission is usually through a state or university entrance test. Government posts such as Kendriya Vidyalaya principal are filled through a separate central exam.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Running the school day to day: teachers, timetables, exam results, admissions, fees and budget, safety, inspections, and talks with parents and the school management committee.

A day in the work
Most principals start early and check attendance, the day's timetable and any problems from the day before. Mornings often go to assembly, staff meetings or a quick visit to classes. Afternoons may bring parent meetings, fee or admission queries, a safety drill, or a call with the management. Many days end with paperwork for results or inspections.

The path, step by step

  1. Class 10–12Choose Arts, Science or Commerce. Principals come from all three. Good marks in the subjects you may want to teach later will help.
  2. After Class 12 · 3 yearsTake a bachelor's degree (B.A., B.Sc. or B.Com.) in the subject you want to teach. Many B.Ed and Master's courses ask for at least 50% marks. (reported — check with the official body)
  3. After degree · 2 yearsDo a Master's degree in your subject, then a B.Ed from an NCTE-recognised college. B.Ed admission is often through a state entrance test. (reported — check with the official body)
  4. After B.Ed · several yearsTeach in a recognised school or college, or work in school administration. CBSE rules count specific years of teaching or of administrative charge, such as heading a school. The exact years depend on the route you take. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · HiringApply for a principal or vice-principal post. Private schools hire through their management committee after interviews. CBSE has said it would hold a Principal Eligibility Test; check whether this is still in force before planning around it. (reported — check with the official body)

Ways in

  • Private school (CBSE or another board)You join through your degree, B.Ed and years of teaching or admin work, then get hired by the school management. CBSE sets minimum rules for its affiliated schools.
  • Government school, such as Kendriya VidyalayaYou apply through a central recruitment exam and must meet service rules, which usually need a long record as a senior teacher. Reported: the 2026 cycle has listed Principal posts, but check the current notice on kvsangathan.nic.in.

What people earn

Pay varies a lot. A new head of a small school earns far less than a principal of a large city school with many years behind them. City, school type and management all make a difference.

Myth and fact

Myth: A B.Ed graduate can become a school principal soon after finishing.
Fact: Boards such as CBSE expect several years of teaching or administrative work first. The exact number depends on the post and the board.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Join a school club such as debate, science or the library club. Take charge of one small event this term.
  • Class 10–12Take one free online course on teaching or school education on SWAYAM and finish its first module this month.Open link ↗
  • College or afterVolunteer for a month at a local school or learning centre, helping with a class or reading session. Notice how the school's day is planned.

Good to know

  • Rules differ by board. CBSE, ICSE, state boards and government schools each set their own rules, so check the board your school follows.
  • The CBSE rules have changed over time. The CBSE teaching staff page says the current qualifications are in its 2018 bye-laws. The version we could read is the 2012 text, so verify the latest version before planning.
  • Most principals reach the post after many years in teaching. Expect a long climb, not a quick entry.
