Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Seeing a child finally learn something after many small steps
  • Working closely with families, teachers and therapists as a team
  • Making creative teaching aids and trying new ways to explain things
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Progress can be slow, and some days are emotionally tiring
  • Pay in many NGOs and small schools is modest, and government posts open only now and then
  • Paperwork, records and RCI renewal rules need regular attention
Class 11–12 subjects
Any stream in Class 12 works. For the 2-year D.Ed. Special Education diploma, RCI's course papers ask for a pass in Class 12 with 50% marks in any stream. For the B.Ed. Special Education route you first need a bachelor's degree. Most colleges ask for about 50%, but the cut-off varies by college and state. Subjects like Psychology, Home Science or languages help, but nobody requires them.
First degree
D.Ed. Special Education (2 years, after Class 12), or B.Ed. Special Education (2 years, after a bachelor's degree; distance mode takes 2.5 years). An integrated B.Ed.–M.Ed. in Special Education (Intellectual Disability) takes 3 years after graduation. All must be from an RCI-recognised institute.
Entrance exams
There is no single national entrance test. Admission to the diploma and B.Ed. courses depends on the college or university: merit in Class 12 or graduation marks, or a state or university entrance test (reported; check each college's prospectus). For government school jobs you also need CTET and then the recruitment exam for KVS/NVS (run by CBSE), or the state's own teacher test.
Licence or registration
Registration on the Central Rehabilitation Register (CRR) of the Rehabilitation Council of India. Under Section 13 of the RCI Act, 1992, only people with a recognised qualification who are enrolled on the CRR may hold such a post in government or in an institution run by a local authority, or practise as a rehabilitation professional.

What the work is like

Assessing what a child can do, writing an individual education plan, and teaching reading, writing, maths, communication and daily-living skills in small steps. Working with parents, class teachers, therapists and doctors. Making simple teaching aids. Helping children settle into regular classrooms or special schools.

A day in the work
You reach school before the bell and check the plan for each child you will see today. In the morning you might teach a small group of children with intellectual disability to match words and pictures, then sit one-to-one with a child who has dyslexia and practise reading with sound cards. After lunch you help a class teacher change a worksheet for a child who is partly blind, or join a short meeting with a speech therapist. Before leaving you write progress notes, then call a parent to share one small thing their child managed this week.

Professional qualificationRun by Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities. You can start after: Class 12 (any stream, 50%) for the D.Ed. route; a bachelor's degree for the B.Ed. route. Minimum time: 2 years after Class 12 (D.Ed. Special Education).

The full route: exams, training, registration

  1. Step 1 · Class 10–12Choose any stream and aim for at least 50% in Class 12, which the diploma route needs. Spend time around children with disabilities, for example by volunteering at a special school or a local NGO, to check that this work suits you.
  2. Step 2 · After Class 12Choose a route: the 2-year D.Ed. Special Education diploma straight after Class 12, or a bachelor's degree first and then the 2-year B.Ed. Special Education. Also pick one disability area, such as hearing, visual, intellectual and developmental, autism or multiple disabilities. RCI offers separate courses for each.
  3. Step 3 · 2 years (D.Ed. or B.Ed.)Train at an institute on RCI's approved list. A large part of the course is practical work in schools and centres. The RCI curriculum for the visually impaired diploma lists 1,500 practical hours. Apply for Pre-CRR registration with RCI within the first 3 months of the course. It costs ₹100; if you miss that window, the CRR application costs ₹500.
  4. Step 4 · Within 6 months of finishingRegister on the RCI Central Rehabilitation Register online. RCI's norms say there is no fee for a fresh CRR number or renewal. They also say registration should be done within 6 months of completing the course.
  5. Step 5 · Finding a jobWork in special schools, NGOs, early-intervention centres, inclusive private schools or resource rooms. For central government schools, KVS/NVS special educator posts are filled through a CBSE recruitment. The 2025–26 notice (Advt 01/2025) had Tier-I on 10–11 January 2026, and Tier-II results for TGT (Special Educator) came out on 1 September 2026. As relayed in exam-news summaries of that notice, PRT posts need Class 12 (50%) plus a 2-year D.Ed. Special Education, CTET Paper I and an age of up to 30. TGT posts need a graduation (50%) plus B.Ed., and an age of up to 35. Check the official notice before relying on this. (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · Every 7 yearsKeep your registration alive. RCI says registration is valid for 7 years and renews automatically if you have collected 100 CRE (Continuing Rehabilitation Education) points. Points do not carry over to the next cycle.
  7. OptionalM.Ed. Special Education or an RCI-approved PG diploma, for example in early intervention. These help with teacher-training or senior roles.

Ways in

  • D.Ed. Special Education after Class 12Class 12 in any stream with 50%, then a 2-year RCI-approved diploma in one disability area. Time: 2 years after Class 12
  • Degree first, then B.Ed. Special EducationAny bachelor's degree (usually 50%), then a 2-year B.Ed. Special Education. A distance-mode B.Ed. takes 2.5 years. Time: 3 years + 2 years
  • Integrated B.Ed.–M.Ed. Special Education (Intellectual Disability)A 3-year RCI course after graduation, which gives both degrees together. Time: 3 years after graduation
Recently changed, or still changing
  • RCI's current norms say CRR registration is valid for 7 years (it used to be 5), with automatic renewal once you hold 100 CRE points. Anyone who held a 5-year registration when the circular was issued got a 2-year extension.

What people earn

Pay is modest at the start in NGOs and small special schools, and rises with experience, extra qualifications and city; government school posts and larger inclusive private schools usually pay more and are more secure, while private practice and home-visit work vary with how many families you serve.

Myth and fact

Myth: Any B.Ed. degree is enough to work as a special educator.
Fact: No. To hold such a post in government or in an institution run by a local authority, you need an RCI-recognised qualification and a place on the Central Rehabilitation Register. A general B.Ed. does not give you that.

For girls and students with disabilities

The KVS/NVS special educator posts in Advt 01/2025 were reported to carry seats reserved for candidates with learning disability, visual impairment and hearing impairment (5 each for TGT and PRT), plus an 'others' category (reported; check the official notice). Some institutes give extra marks in admission to applicants who are themselves a person with disability or a relative of one, as the NIEPMD B.Ed. page shows; check each college.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Ask your school or a nearby special school whether you can help for an afternoon, for example by reading aloud or playing a game with children. Notice what you enjoy and what feels difficult.
  • Class 10–12Look up the disability areas on RCI's list of approved courses (hearing, visual, intellectual, autism and others) and write down which one interests you most and why.Open link ↗
  • College or afterCheck that the course you plan to join is on RCI's approved list, and read how Pre-CRR registration works before you start.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • A general B.Ed. is not enough. Check that the course and the institute are on RCI's approved list before you pay any fee. Courses are approved disability by disability.
  • Your course covers one disability area, such as hearing, visual, intellectual and developmental disability or autism. Pick the one you want to work in. Some people later add a second qualification, which RCI registration allows as an add-on.
  • Government posts open only now and then, and each notice sets its own age limits, qualifications and CTET rules. Read the latest official notice for the post you want.
  • Interested in therapy rather than teaching? Look at speech-language pathology, audiology and occupational therapy too.
