Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Helping people relax and feel looked after
- Hands-on work with clear routines and hygiene rules
- Building regular clients who come back to you
- Long hours on your feet and physical strain from massage work
- Evening, weekend and holiday shifts in hotels and resorts
- Income can be uneven at first, and spa jobs can be seasonal
- Class 11–12 subjects
- No particular subject is compulsory. The government Spa Therapy trade asks for a Class 10 pass. Private CIDESCO-style diplomas usually ask for Class 10 or 12. Basic English reading and writing helps, because you will read product labels, client forms and training notes.
- First degree
- No degree is needed. The main routes are a one-year government ITI trade or a diploma of a few months to a year from a spa school.
- Entrance exams
- Government route: a trade test at the end of the course. CIDESCO route: a multiple-choice test and a practical exam at the school.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Giving massages, body wraps, scrubs and facials. Preparing the treatment room, towels and oils. Taking a short health history from each client and noting any allergies or conditions. Keeping hygiene and safety standards, and recording treatments and product use.
A day in the work
A typical day starts with cleaning and setting up a treatment room, with fresh towels, oils and warm water ready. You meet the client, check their health form and explain the treatment, then give a massage or body treatment of about an hour. After each session you clean and sterilise the tools, note what was used and prepare for the next client.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 10Finish Class 10. This is the entry point for the government Spa Therapy trade and most short diplomas. Learn about body systems in your Biology lessons, since spa work needs basic anatomy.
- Step 2 · After Class 10 or 12Choose a route. The government trade is a one-year course for those who have finished Class 10. Private or CIDESCO diplomas are often taken after Class 10 or 12. Check the course hours, practical training and fees in writing before you join.
- Step 3 · 1 year (government trade)Complete the one-year Spa Therapy trade. It covers personality and hygiene, body parts and muscles, holistic massage, facial care and treatments such as hydrotherapy, stone therapy and Ayurvedic massage. Classes combine theory and practice.
- Step 3 · 600+ hours (CIDESCO route)Complete at least 600 hours at a registered CIDESCO school. Then take the multiple-choice test and the practical exam. CIDESCO says the Spa diploma needs a set number of supervised hours, and schools may use an outside spa for practical work.
- Step 4 · End of courseTake the trade test to get the National Trade Certificate for the ITI route. Or pass the school's exams for a private diploma. Keep a record of your practice treatments; employers often ask for it. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · After trainingStart in a spa, salon, hotel or resort as an assistant or junior therapist. With experience, move to senior therapist, centre head or trainer roles. A higher NSQF-level course, such as Senior Spa Therapist, can help with promotion.
Ways in
- Government ITI or skill centre (Spa Therapy trade)A one-year course under the Craftsmen Training Scheme, open after Class 10. Fees are low in government institutes. Training is hands-on and includes anatomy, hygiene, and massage and body treatments.
- CIDESCO Spa Therapy diplomaAn international spa diploma run by registered schools. It needs at least 600 hours of training, a multiple-choice test and a practical exam. Schools are private, and fees vary widely.
- Private spa academy diplomaMany private institutes offer short spa and wellness diplomas, some online. Their length, content and fees vary a lot. Check the course hours, the practical training and whether the certificate is recognised by employers before you join.

What people earn
Earnings start modest for new therapists and rise with experience, skill in specialist treatments, and work in a premium hotel, resort or cruise ship. City, employer and whether you get tips or a service charge also make a big difference.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
The official Spa Therapy trade curriculum lists specific disability categories as eligible for admission. I did not find any relaxations specific to girls or women for this career.

Good to know
- Spa therapy is not a regulated profession in India, so there is no single licence. Your certificate and your skill are what employers check.
- The national Qualification Pack for Spa Therapist sets out what you must do on the job, including anatomy and client care. Read it to see how the work is judged.
- Check that a private school is genuine before you pay. Ask for the exact course name, hours, exam process and a written fee breakdown.
- Spa jobs often need evening, weekend and holiday shifts, especially in hotels and resorts.
