Is this for me?
- Seeing people feel calmer, stronger or more flexible over weeks
- Working with people of different ages and backgrounds
- A flexible schedule and the chance to set your own classes
- Early morning or evening classes, often including weekends
- Income can be uneven at the start, especially if you work for yourself
- Teaching the same basics many times, and handling students with injuries or health problems
- Class 11–12 subjects
- No particular school subject is needed. Most yoga teacher-training courses ask for a Class 10 pass, but the YCB certification exam has no age or education bar. Biology helps if you plan to study yoga science or therapy later.
- First degree
- No degree is needed to teach at the basic level. A short YCB-linked teacher-training course is the usual start. A B.Sc in Yoga or a yoga diploma is an optional route.
- Entrance exams
- The Yoga Certification Board (YCB), under the Ministry of AYUSH, runs the certification exam. Level 1 (Yoga Protocol Instructor) is out of 200 marks: 60 theory and 140 practical.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Leading group and one-to-one yoga sessions, asanas, pranayama and relaxation. Planning a session, checking posture, and adapting practice for beginners, older people or people with health issues. Also running classes in parks, schools, offices and wellness centres.
A day in the work
A typical day might start with a 6 a.m. class in a park or studio for beginners. Mid-morning could be a short session for office workers, followed by lesson planning and checking students' posture. Evenings are often for a second batch or a private one-to-one session, and the day ends with notes on who needs extra help.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 7–10Learn basic yoga and breathing in school or a local class. Keep up a daily practice and notice how you teach others, such as a younger cousin or a friend.
- Step 2 · Class 10–12 or afterJoin a training centre accredited by the YCB for a Level 1 (Yoga Protocol Instructor) course. The course must run at least 200 hours: about one month full-time or three months part-time.
- Step 3 · After the courseRegister and sit the YCB exam. Level 1 is marked out of 200: 60 for theory and 140 for practical. You must score 70% in each part. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · After you passYour certificate is valid for five years. Renewal follows the YCB's rules at that time, and the board has issued circulars extending validity for some levels.
- OptionalLevel 2 (Yoga Wellness Instructor) and Level 3 (Yoga Teacher & Evaluator) go deeper into anatomy, wellness and assessment. Level 2 is often quoted as a 400-hour course. (reported — check with the official body)
Ways in
- YCB certification routeComplete a YCB-accredited Level 1 or Level 2 course, then sit the YCB exam. This is the most common route for people who want to teach in India.
- Degree or diploma routeStudy yoga at a university or institute, such as a B.Sc in Yoga or a diploma from the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga. This takes longer and suits people who want to teach in colleges, hospitals or research.
- Private yoga school routeTrain at a private school that follows an international credential such as Yoga Alliance. This is a private credential, not a government one, so check what each employer wants.

What people earn
Earnings vary widely. A new teacher with a basic certificate usually earns less than an experienced teacher with a niche specialty, and teachers in big cities or premium studios often earn more than those in small towns or community classes.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
The YCB sets no age limit for its exams, and a school student can sit them. I did not find specific quotas or reserved seats for girls or for students with disabilities in the YCB rules.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Join your school's yoga or morning assembly practice. Learn the basic breathing exercises and teach them to one friend.

Good to know
- YCB certification is a national government credential, but teaching yoga is not a licensed profession in the same way as medicine or law. Each employer or government scheme sets its own rules, so check the job notice.
- Check that your training centre is accredited. The YCB website lists approved training centres and accredited yoga institutions.
- Certificates need renewal after five years. Keep your certificate details and renewal dates in one place.
- Yoga teaching pays best with experience, a clear specialty (such as therapy, pregnancy or older adults) and good communication. Results vary a lot, so do not rely on a single course alone.
