Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- A steady, permanent government job with fixed hours
- Practical, hands-on work with different people through the day
- Starting a career right after Class 10, without years of college
- The pay is entry-level and promotions are slow
- You can be posted far from home, and transfers are possible
- Very tough competition, and results can take a long time to come
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 10 (Matriculation) pass from a recognised board. No stream or Class 11–12 subjects are needed. Most MTS posts need you to be 18–25 years old. A few posts, and Havaldar, allow up to 27. Age relaxations apply for reserved categories and some others.
- First degree
- No degree needed. Class 10 pass is enough to apply. Many applicants are graduates, so the competition is high.
- Entrance exams
- SSC Multi-Tasking (Non-Technical) Staff and Havaldar (CBIC & CBN) Examination, a computer-based exam run by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC). Havaldar candidates also take a physical test.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Filing and carrying papers, dispatch and receipt of dak (post), photocopying, keeping rooms and records in order, and helping officers with day-to-day office tasks. Exact duties depend on the office. Posts such as daftary, jamadar, peon and chowkidar come under this exam (reported). Havaldar posts are in GST, customs and narcotics offices (CBIC and CBN).
A day in the work
You reach the office by 9 and collect the day's dak and files from the section. You carry them to officers, take signed papers to other rooms and send letters out through dispatch. Between rounds you photocopy documents, arrange files on shelves and keep the rooms and meeting tables ready. At the end of the day you help lock up records. On busy days, such as when an inspection or a meeting is on, you may stay a little late.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 9–10Pass Class 10 from a recognised board. No particular subjects are needed. Use these years to get comfortable with basic Maths, reasoning, English and general awareness, because the exam tests them.
- Step 2 · After Class 10, age 18+Apply online on ssc.gov.in when SSC issues the notice. In the 2025 cycle, applications ran from 26 June to 24 July 2025. Most MTS posts need an age of 18–25 on the cut-off date (born between 02.08.2000 and 01.08.2007 in 2025). Havaldar and a few MTS posts allow 18–27. I could not confirm an official 2026 notice, so check ssc.gov.in for the latest dates.
- Step 3 · Computer Based ExamA computer-based exam in two sessions, in Hindi, English or 13 regional languages. You must reach the minimum marks in both sessions: 30% for General, 25% for OBC/EWS and 20% for others. The merit list is made only from Session-II marks, after normalising scores across shifts. In the 2025 cycle, the exam was held from 4 to 20 February 2026.
- Step 4 · Physical test (Havaldar only)For Havaldar, candidates are shortlisted at 7 for every 1 vacancy for a Physical Efficiency Test (walking) and Physical Standard Test (height, chest). MTS has no physical test. If you fail the physical test, you stay in the running for MTS based on your exam merit. Standards in the 2025 cycle were about 1,600 m in 15 minutes for men and 1 km in 20 minutes for women (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · Final merit, document check, medicalFinal selection depends on your Session-II score, your category and the state or office you listed as preferences. Expect a document check and medical examination before an offer (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · Joining and probationYou join a central government office in your allotted state, usually on probation as per department rules. After that you are a permanent Group C employee (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
Your real chances
In the 2025 cycle, SSC received 36,19,834 applications (about 36 lakh). Its result notice says 8,04,633 candidates appeared in the computer-based exam held 4–20 February 2026. Vacancies were reported at about 7,948 after revision (reported; the exact count is in SSC's vacancy notice). That is roughly one post for every 450 applications.

What people earn
Pay Level 1 of the 7th CPC Pay Matrix, General Central Service Group C, non-gazetted, non-ministerial (2025 notice). The Level 1 scale is ₹18,000–56,900, with allowances on top (reported).
You start at the bottom of the central pay scale, and take-home pay differs by city because allowances such as house rent are higher in big cities. It grows slowly through yearly increments and promotions.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Seats are reserved for SC, ST, OBC, EWS, ex-servicemen and persons with benchmark disabilities, and reserved categories get age relaxation. The notice lists the disabilities that suit MTS work. For Havaldar, the physical standards for women are lower than for men (reported). The notice also encourages women to apply.

Good to know
- SSC MTS is held roughly once a year, but the schedule can slip. The 2025 notice came in June 2025, the exam was in February 2026, and the Havaldar shortlist result came on 3 August 2026.
- Havaldar is a separate post in the same exam. It needs physical fitness and is posted only to CBIC and CBN offices.
- The post is Pay Level 1, the lowest rung of central government pay. Think of it as a stable first job, not a high-paying one. You can still prepare for CHSL or other exams later.
- Beware of fake websites and agents who promise a job for money. SSC recruitment is through the exam only, and the official site is ssc.gov.in.
