LDC / Junior Secretariat Assistant (SSC CHSL)
Do clerical, data entry and office support work in central government departments.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Steady, predictable hours and a government workplace
- Careful work with files, records and computers
- Learning how a ministry or department really runs
- Work can be repetitive, and growth depends on departmental promotion rules
- You may be posted far from home, in any state
- Stiff competition: lakhs of people prepare for only a few thousand seats, and a typing test must be cleared
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 (10+2) pass or equivalent from a recognised board. For LDC/JSA, the stream does not matter. A few Data Entry Operator posts in some departments have asked for Science with Maths (reported), so read the post-wise details in each year's notice. Age 18 to 27 years in the 2026 notice, counted as on 1 August 2026, with relaxation for reserved categories.
- First degree
- No degree needed. Class 12 is enough to apply.
- Entrance exams
- SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level) exam, held by the Staff Selection Commission. Tier-I and Tier-II are computer-based tests. Tier-II also has a typing or skill test, and then documents are checked.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Typing letters and notes, entering data on computers, filing and keeping records, handling files and dak (incoming and outgoing mail), helping senior officers, and answering queries in a central government ministry, department or office.
A day in the work
You reach the office around 9:30 and check the files and mail that arrived overnight. You type a letter or a note that your section officer has marked, enter details into a register or software, and keep the right paper in the right file. By afternoon you might be tracking a pending file, answering a phone call from another section, or preparing papers for a meeting. The work is steady and rule-based, and most of the learning is about how government files move.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 10–12Any stream is fine. Get good at English, basic maths, reasoning and general knowledge, because all of these are tested. Start typing practice early. Typing on a computer is a skill you can build for free over a few months.
- Step 2 · Class 12Pass Class 12. In the 2026 notice the age limit was 18 to 27 years as on 1 August 2026. SC/ST get 5 extra years, OBC get 3, and persons with benchmark disabilities (PwBD) get 10 (more for PwBD in reserved categories). Check the exact cut-off date and age rules in each year's notice.
- Step 3 · Apply onlineSSC publishes a notice and you apply on its website. In 2026 the window ran from 7 September to 7 October. The fee was ₹100, and women, SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen candidates were exempt. SSC's tentative calendar lists CHSL as an annual exam, so watch ssc.gov.in for the next notice.
- Step 4 · Tier-I (computer-based test)In 2026 the test has four parts: English, General Intelligence, Quantitative Aptitude and General Awareness. Each part has 25 questions and 50 marks, and the paper is 60 minutes with a sectional timer. The 2026 Tier-I dates were 30 November to 31 December 2026.
- Step 5 · Tier-II and typing testTier-II has maths and reasoning, English and general awareness, and a computer knowledge test that is qualifying. Wrong answers lose marks in these sections. You must qualify every section. On the same day, LDC/JSA candidates take a 10-minute typing test, which is 35 words per minute in English or 30 in Hindi. Data Entry Operator posts have a separate data-entry skill test.
- Step 6 · Post preference and document verificationBefore the final result you fill an online form with your post and department choices. Then the ministry or department checks your original documents, such as marksheets, category and disability certificates.
- Step 7 · Joining and probationYou are posted to the allotted department, anywhere in India (reported). Most central government posts start with a probation period set by the department before you are made permanent. Check your appointment letter for the exact terms. What people earn

Pay starts modest but steady, and take-home depends on the city you are posted to (allowances are higher in big cities) and on how quickly you get promoted in your department.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Women, SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen candidates did not pay the ₹100 fee in 2026. PwBD candidates get 10 years of age relaxation (13 for PwBD-OBC, 15 for PwBD-SC/ST). Eligible PwBD candidates can ask for a scribe or extra time, and need to upload disability certificates in the form. Posts list their own physical requirements in the notice, so check them for your post.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Practise touch typing for 10 minutes a day on a school or home computer, using any free typing tutor. Try English first, then Hindi if you can. Slow and accurate is better than fast and wrong.
- Class 10–12This month, read the official CHSL 2026 notice on ssc.gov.in. Note the age rule, the exam stages and the typing speed, and write them in a one-page plan for yourself.Open link ↗
- College or afterLearn word processing and spreadsheets (Word and Excel or free alternatives) through a free SWAYAM computer-basics course, and keep up daily typing practice.Open link ↗
Good to know
- The 2026 cycle announced about 2,536 tentative vacancies for LDC/JSA, DEO and DEO Grade 'A' together (reported). SSC said the post-wise and category-wise split would come later, so the LDC/JSA number alone is not yet known.
- Applications for the 2026 exam closed on 7 October 2026. If you are in Class 12 now, plan for the next notice, and check the age rule for that year.
- Typing is a qualifying test. You cannot skip it, and failing it costs you the post. It is easier to build the speed over months than in the last few weeks.
- Postings can be anywhere in India, so be ready to live away from home, especially in the first years.
