Fire Service Officer (State Fire and Emergency)
Leads firefighting and rescue teams during fires, accidents and disasters.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Leading a team and making quick decisions that protect people
- Physical, outdoor and hands-on work rather than a desk
- A steady government job with a clear purpose
- Night shifts, holidays and being on call, with real danger and stressful sights
- Strict physical and eyesight standards, and transfers across the state
- Few vacancies, and notices come only now and then, so the wait can be long
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Officer posts need a graduation degree. Kerala's 2026 notice asks for a science degree, preferably with Chemistry. So Science in Class 11–12 keeps every door open, and PCM is the safest. Other states set their own degree rules, so read each state's notice. For B.E. Fire Engineering at NFSC Nagpur, Physics, Maths and English are compulsory in Class 12, plus one of Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or a vocational subject, with about 45% marks (reported, not confirmed on an official page).
- First degree
- A bachelor's degree, usually science or engineering (3–4 years). The other main way in is B.E. Fire Engineering at the National Fire Service College (NFSC), Nagpur, which is 4 years (reported).
- Entrance exams
- The state's own recruitment body runs selection, such as a Public Service Commission or a police/fire recruitment board (Kerala PSC for Kerala). After that come physical measurement, a physical efficiency test and a medical. For B.E. Fire Engineering at NFSC, admission is through JEE Main Paper 1 (reported).
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Running a fire station and leading crews at fires, road accidents, building collapses, floods and chemical leaks. Also checking fire safety in buildings, training staff, and looking after pumps, ladders and breathing sets.
A day in the work
You start the shift by checking the pump, ladders, breathing sets and the duty roster with your crew. Between calls you run drills, inspect nearby buildings for fire safety and do paperwork. When the alarm rings, you leave within minutes, read the situation on the spot and decide who goes in, where the water comes from and when to pull back. After the call you debrief the team and refill and clean the equipment. Then you wait for the next one, which may come in the middle of the night.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 9–12Build real fitness: running, strength, swimming. Take Science in Class 11–12, PCM if you can. Get your eyes tested early. Kerala's notice asks for 6/6 distant vision without glasses, and colour blindness counts against you.
- Step 2 · Class 12Pick your way in. Either do a science or engineering degree and wait for a state recruitment notice, or aim for B.E. Fire Engineering at NFSC Nagpur through JEE Main Paper 1. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · 3–4 yearsComplete your degree. State notices ask for a degree by the last date to apply. Kerala's 2026 notice asked for a science graduate, preferably with Chemistry.
- Step 4 · Recruitment noticeApply when your state advertises Station Officer posts. These come rarely and with few seats. Kerala PSC's notice 047/2026 (30 June 2026) listed 1 vacancy, age 20–35, with the last date 5 August 2026. Age rules and relaxations differ by state.
- Step 5 · Physical tests and medicalHeight, weight and chest are measured first, and you cannot take the physical efficiency test if you miss the standards. In Kerala the minimum is 165 cm height, 50 kg weight, 81 cm chest with 5 cm expansion for General candidates. SC/ST candidates get lower height, weight and chest limits (160 cm, 48 kg, 76 cm). Then come the physical efficiency test and a medical. Check each state's own notice, because the numbers differ.
- Step 6 · TrainingDirect-recruit officers do an initial course at the State Fire Service Training School or NFSC Nagpur. NFSC's Station Officers' course for direct recruits runs 25 weeks. In Kerala, you then spend 6 months on duty under a fully trained officer before you get a station of your own.
- Step 7 · ProbationKerala's notice sets 2 years of probation within 3 years, with departmental tests such as First Aid and fire service standing orders. It also asks for a 7-year service bond. Promotions to Assistant Divisional Officer and Divisional Officer come later, over many years.
Ways in
- Direct recruitment as Station OfficerGraduate, apply to the state's recruitment body, clear the physical tests and medical, then train. NFSC's page says direct recruits join as Group-B officers or above through a State Public Service Commission or a statutory recruitment board.
- B.E. Fire Engineering at NFSC NagpurA 4-year engineering degree focused on fire (reported). Fire departments and industry employ these graduates. It is useful for senior fire posts, but a degree alone does not give a government post. You still apply when states advertise.
- Rise from within the departmentJoin as a fireman or leading fireman, do the Sub Officers' course, then the Station Officers' course. NFSC's page asks for 2 years as Sub Officer, or 5 years as Leading Fireman or Driver-cum-Pump Operator. This is slower, but it has a lower entry qualification.

What people earn
Varies by state. Kerala's 2026 notice for Station Officer (Trainee) gives a pay scale of ₹43,400–91,200 per month, plus allowances as per state rules. Other states use their own scales, so check the notice.
Pay starts modest and rises with promotions and years of service, and it depends on the state; allowances such as housing and hazard duty depend on the state and the city of posting.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Rules differ by state, so read each notice. Kerala's 2026 Station Officer notice says women and differently-abled candidates are not eligible for that post. SC/ST candidates get lower height, weight and chest limits there. OBC and SC/ST candidates get the usual age relaxation. Other states may allow women, so check your state's notice.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Make a fire-escape map of your home or school. Learn the emergency numbers 101 and 112, and practise a family fire drill. Join your school's first-aid, scouts or NCC activities if they exist.
- Class 10–12If you are 15 or older, register on MY Bharat and look for first-aid, disaster-relief or community-safety volunteering near you. Start a simple routine of running and swimming.Open link ↗
- College or afterTake a free SWAYAM or NPTEL course in chemistry, safety or disaster management. Chemistry helps in understanding why fires spread and how chemical fires behave. Check your state's fire service website for the next recruitment notice.Open link ↗
Good to know
- Vacancies are few and irregular. Kerala's 2026 Station Officer notice had only 1 post. Watch your own state's recruitment website and read each notice fully.
- Rules differ a lot between states: degree, age, height, and even who can apply. Do not rely on one state's notice for another state.
- NFSC's Station Officers' course page lists a valid heavy motor vehicle driving licence as a requirement for candidates. Ask early about learning to drive.
- Fire officers work in shifts, may be posted far from home, and the work involves real danger. Think about this honestly before you commit.
