Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Preventing problems before they happen, and seeing a site become safer over time
- Working with people on the shop floor and training them in simple, clear steps
- Staying calm and organised when a real emergency comes up
- Night shifts, plant shutdowns and emergency call-outs can break your routine
- You may be posted to a remote plant or a new city, and you may face workers who resist safety rules
- Most of the work is checking, paperwork and repeated training, which can feel slow and unglamorous
- Class 11–12 subjects
- For the four-year B.E. Fire Engineering at NFSC Nagpur: Class 12 with English, Physics and Maths, plus one of Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or a technical vocational subject, at least 45% overall (40% for SC/ST candidates) (reported). For the one-year industrial safety diplomas: an engineering diploma or degree, or a science degree, as set by each institute.

- Entrance exams

- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Checking workplaces for fire and safety risks; inspecting fire alarms, extinguishers, hydrants and exits; running drills and safety training; investigating accidents and near-misses; keeping records; and leading the team during an emergency.
A day in the work
The morning often starts with a walk through the plant or building to check exits, alarms, extinguishers and blocked passages. You then meet supervisors to fix the problems you found and note them in a register. Some afternoons go to a drill, a training session for new workers, or the report on a minor accident. When an alarm sounds, the job becomes emergency response, and you lead people to safety.
The path, step by step

- Step 2 · Class 12Aim for the minimum marks in the required subjects. The college uses a national entrance score (JEE Main) for selection, so check the current brochure for the exact cut-off. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · May–July of the year you applyApply online on the NFSC portal. For 2026–27, the official schedule opened the form in mid-May and closed it on 2 July, with document checks and physical and medical tests in mid-July.

Pay depends on your qualification, the industry (chemicals, oil, construction, hospitals, offices), the employer and the city. Fresh entrants and experienced officers are paid very differently, and large plants usually pay more than small units.

Good to know
- Under the Factories Act, 1948, factories must appoint safety officers. The DGFASLI institutes say their one-year diplomas are the recognised qualification for these posts.
- Fees, seat numbers and entrance rules for NFSC are from secondary sites and unconfirmed in the official brochure. Check nfscnagpur.nic.in before you apply.
- Job titles vary a lot. Some fire safety posts in offices and hospitals ask only for a diploma, while factory posts often need an engineering or industrial safety qualification. Read each job's requirement line.
- The 2026–27 NFSC dates are for that session only. Next year's dates and rules may change.
