NMMSS Scholarship: Last Date Extended to 15 November for Class 9 to 12 Students
Published 01/11/2026

In short: Students now have until 15 November 2026 to apply for, or renew, the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMSS) on the National Scholarship Portal. The Ministry of Education announced the extension on 31 October. It matters to families of government and government-aided school students in Class 9 to 12 whose child has cleared, or is renewing, this scholarship.
What happened
On the evening of 31 October, the Ministry of Education said the last date for NMMSS applications for 2026-27 has moved to 15 November 2026. It also set two later dates for the officials who check each application:
- 30 November 2026: the school's nodal officer (called Level 1, or L1) must verify the application.
- 15 December 2026: the district nodal officer (Level 2, or L2) must verify it.
The portal has been open since 1 June. By 30 October, the ministry counted 90,483 fresh applications and 1,99,531 renewals. The extra time is for students still finishing, and for schools and districts to verify.
When we wrote about the National Scholarship Portal's 31 October closing date last week, we could not find the official notice for NMMSS. This is that notice, and it gives a later date.
Who this scholarship is for
NMMSS helps bright students from families with limited means stay in school from Class 9 to Class 12. The ministry says there are one lakh fresh scholarships each year.
- Fresh awards go to Class 9 students who passed the selection test run by their State or Union Territory.
- Renewals are for students in Class 10, 11 and 12 who already hold the scholarship and meet the academic conditions for renewal.
- To sit the selection test, a student needed at least 55% in Class 7 (50% for SC/ST students), and parents' income could not be more than ₹3.5 lakh a year.
- It covers students in state government, government-aided and local body schools.
₹12,000
a year, straight into the student's bank account
Class 9 to 12, renewed each year if academic conditions are met
For students
A renewal is easy to forget, because nothing reminds you. If you got NMMSS in Class 9 and are now in Class 10, 11 or 12, you must renew it every year. Missing this year's window can stop the payments.
Four steps for families
- 1Finish One Time Registration (OTR) on the scholarship portal
- 2Apply (Class 9) or renew (Class 10 to 12) under NMMSS
- 3Save the application number and final page
- 4Ask the school to verify it before 30 November
- One Time Registration (OTR) first. The ministry says every student needs an OTR on the portal before applying. If you made one last year, use the same one.
- Submit, don't just save. A draft is not an application. Download or photograph the final page with your application number.
- Tell your class teacher or principal the same day. Your form is only complete once the school verifies it. Ask who the scholarship nodal officer is.
For parents
The money. The scholarship is ₹12,000 a year, paid straight into the student's bank account by direct benefit transfer (DBT). Make sure the account is active and linked as the portal asks, so a payment is not returned.
The paperwork. Keep the income certificate, caste certificate (if you are claiming SC/ST relaxation), Aadhaar details and last year's marks ready. If any certificate has expired, renew it now rather than next week.
The follow-up. Many applications get stuck at verification, not at the student's end. After your child applies, check with the school before 30 November that it has been verified. Then check again in December that the district has done its part.
Watch out for middlemen. The National Scholarship Portal is the government's own process, and your child's school verifies the form. Be careful of anyone who asks for money to "get it approved".
