After 12th PCB: options beyond MBBS
Facts checked 14/10/2026
Most PCB families start with one goal: MBBS. That is a fine goal. But it helps to see the full picture early, so that "not MBBS" never feels like "nothing".
The honest numbers
- About 20 lakh students wrote NEET UG in 2026 (19,99,895), and 11.21 lakh qualified.
- India has 1,40,664 MBBS seats for 2026–27 in 839 colleges (64,121 in government colleges), not counting AIIMS, JIPMER and other national institutes.
So there is roughly one MBBS seat for every 14 students who sit the exam, and many of those seats are in private colleges with high fees. This is not a reason to give up. It is a reason to have a second path you genuinely like.
Courses that need NEET
NEET is used for more than MBBS:
- MBBS and BDS (dental), everywhere in India, including AIIMS and JIPMER.
- AYUSH degrees: BAMS (Ayurveda), BHMS (Homoeopathy), BUMS (Unani), BSMS (Siddha).
- B.Sc (Hons) Nursing at AIIMS and some other institutes, and B.Sc Nursing in the Military Nursing Service.
- B.V.Sc & AH (veterinary): NEET is needed for the 15% all-India quota. States fill the rest under their own rules, and many also use NEET.
A good NEET score therefore opens several doors, not one.
Good PCB degrees that don't need NEET
Pharmacy (B.Pharm). Open to PCB students as well as PCM. Admission is through state or university routes. Leads to work in pharma companies, hospitals, research, regulation, or a pharmacy of your own.
Research science (BS-MS). The IISERs take students through their own IISER Aptitude Test. Any three of Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology qualify, so PCB students can apply. NISER and the Mumbai CEBS take students through NEST, with similar rules. Both exams are in early June, and the applications close in spring.
Agriculture, food science and related degrees. Through CUET (ICAR-UG), agricultural universities admit students to 13 degrees, including B.Sc (Hons) Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry, Fisheries, Food Nutrition and Dietetics, and B.Tech Biotechnology.
B.Sc in life sciences. Biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry, zoology, botany and more, through CUET for central universities or through state and private university admissions. A good route into research or a master's later.
Nursing (B.Sc). The Indian Nursing Council asks for at least 45% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology together (40% for SC/ST/OBC) and an entrance test run by the university or state. Some institutes use NEET instead.
Physiotherapy and occupational therapy (BPT, BOT). For 2026–27, the national allied health council deferred the NEET requirement for these and allowed admission on Class 12 PCB marks. Its letter says NEET is expected from 2027–28, which is the year today's Class 12 students apply. Check the rules for your state and college before you plan around it.
Other paths worth a look: psychology, nutrition and dietetics, forensic science, public health, and biomedical work. Each university sets its own rules for these, so check the specific college.
What to do now
- Keep NEET as plan A if your child wants it, and pick one or two plan B courses they would actually enjoy.
- Note the plan B application dates. CUET applications open around January, and IAT and NEST close in spring. All of these come before the NEET result in summer.
- Look at cost and outcome, not only the course name. A private MBBS seat, a government B.Pharm and a BS-MS lead to very different fees and very different lives. Both can be good.
If you want help weighing these, our Clarity + Path (India) package ends with a course and college shortlist and a 12-month action plan.
