If NEET doesn't work out: a calm plan B
Facts checked 14/10/2026
If the NEET result was not what your family hoped for, take a breath first. Most students who write NEET do not get a government MBBS seat. This is not a verdict on your child. It is a numbers problem, and there are several good next steps.
The timeline, so nothing is missed
- January to April: applications for most other routes close — CUET, the IISER Aptitude Test, NEST, and many state and private courses. This is before the NEET result.
- Summer: NEET result. In 2026 it came on 16 July.
- August to late October: all-India MBBS and BDS counselling (MCC) runs in rounds, then a stray vacancy round. State counselling runs alongside.
- September to November: AYUSH counselling (BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, BSMS) runs a little later.
The best plan B is the one applied for before the result, so that there is a real choice in July.
Option 1: repeat NEET next year
- There is no upper age limit for NEET, and the 2026 rules set no limit on the number of attempts.
- The NEET result is valid for one year of admission in India, so a student who repeats simply registers again.
Repeating can be right for a student who missed narrowly and still truly wants medicine. It can be the wrong choice if it is mostly about family pressure. Before deciding, ask honestly:
- How close was the score, and what would change in a second year?
- Does your child want this, or feel they have to?
- What is the plan if the second attempt also falls short? Agree on it now.
If you decide to repeat, consider joining a regular degree at the same time where possible, so the year is not lost.
Option 2: use the same NEET score for other courses
A NEET score that is not enough for MBBS may still open BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS or BSMS seats, B.Sc Nursing at some institutes, and veterinary seats. Register for counselling and look at these properly, not as consolation prizes. Each is a real medical career.
Option 3: a strong non-NEET degree
Pharmacy, BS-MS research science (IISER, NISER), agriculture and food science (through CUET-ICAR), life sciences, nursing, physiotherapy and more. Our guide to PCB options beyond MBBS explains each one, with the official rules.
Option 4: MBBS abroad, with care
Many families look at MBBS abroad. The National Medical Commission's rules for foreign medical graduates are strict:
- Your child must qualify NEET first. For studying abroad, the NEET result stays valid for 3 years.
- The course must be at least 54 months, taught in English, with 12 months of internship at the same foreign institution.
- After returning, 12 more months of supervised internship in India.
- Your child must be eligible to register as a doctor in that country, and finish within 10 years.
- To practise in India, they must pass the licensing exam. Today that is the FMGE screening test. A new exam called NExT has been announced but has no official start date yet.
Ask any agent or university for the total cost in rupees, the language of teaching in hospitals, and recent FMGE pass rates for that university. Get answers in writing before paying.
