Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Solving problems that nobody has solved yet
  • Reading new ideas and arguing about them with smart people
  • Seeing a small idea grow into a method other people use
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Many experiments fail, and progress can feel slow for months
  • A PhD takes four to five years of low pay and close supervision
  • Research jobs are few, so you may need to move cities or countries
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 with Physics and Maths is the usual path into a B.Tech or BE, which is the most common first degree. A 4-year BS in Data Science is another route; it is open from any Class 12 stream if you have Maths at Class 10 level. Computer Science helps a lot, and so does English, because research papers are in English.
First degree
A 4-year B.Tech/BE or BS, then a 2-year M.Tech or MS (some are 3-year research-based M.Tech programmes), then a PhD, which usually takes around 4 to 5 years.
Entrance exams
GATE in CS, EC, EE, DA or MA is the common entry test for funded M.Tech seats at IITs. Many institutes also hold their own written test and interview.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Reading and writing research papers, designing new learning methods, running experiments on large datasets, writing code to test ideas, presenting at conferences, and working with professors, students or company teams.

A day in the work
A typical day starts with reading two or three new papers and noting ideas worth testing. Mornings often go to running experiments or fixing code that failed overnight on a training run. Afternoons may bring a meeting with a professor, a team discussion or a draft paper to edit. Many days end with a presentation prep or a long wait for results.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Physics and Maths. Learn basic Python and get comfortable with algebra, probability and statistics. These are the tools every AI method uses.
  2. Step 2 · After Class 12Join a 4-year B.Tech or BE in Computer Science, Electrical, Electronics or a related branch. A 4-year BS in Data Science is another route.
  3. Step 3 · Final year of degreeAppear for GATE in CS, EC, EE, DA or MA if you want a funded M.Tech seat. At IIT Hyderabad, for example, GATE is one of the admission modes, and some modes use the degree marks and a written test instead.
  4. Step 4 · 2–3 yearsDo an M.Tech or MS in AI, Data Science or Machine Learning. A research-based M.Tech may give you more time with a professor and a chance to publish.
  5. Step 5 · 4–5 yearsDo a PhD in AI or Machine Learning. Most research scientists publish papers during the PhD, and many get funding through a fellowship or a research assistantship.
  6. Step 6 · After PhDTake a post-doctoral role, or a research role in a university, a government lab or a company's AI research team.

Ways in

  • The classic routeB.Tech or BE, then M.Tech or MS, then PhD.
  • The integrated routea 5-year integrated M.Tech or MS, or a dual degree, then a PhD. Many PhD fellowships accept these.
  • The online routethe IIT Madras BS in Data Science and Applications, then an MTech option. It is paid term by term and it is a long route.

What people earn

Earnings vary a lot: a PhD fellow's stipend is fixed by the scheme, while later pay depends on whether you work in a university, a government lab or a company, and on your city and track record.

Myth and fact

Myth: You need to be a maths genius from birth to become an AI researcher.
Fact: Steady practice in maths, coding and reading papers matters more than natural talent. Most researchers built their skills slowly over many years of study.

For girls and students with disabilities

At IIT Madras, the M.Tech application fee is lower for women, SC/ST and PwD candidates (₹300 against ₹600 for others). This is a fee cut, not a seat quota, so check each year's notice for other rules.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Pick one maths topic you find hard and practise it for 20 minutes a day. Then try a small Scratch or Python program, like a quiz that scores answers.
  • Class 10–12Take an online basic statistics course from Khan Academy, which is free. Learn how averages, graphs and probability are used to test ideas.Open link ↗
  • College or afterLook at the free NPTEL course Introduction to Machine Learning. You can follow the lectures for free and skip the paid certificate exam.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • The Prime Minister's Research Fellowship pays ₹70,000 to ₹80,000 a month to PhD students at IITs, IISc and similar institutes. You must first be admitted to a PhD at one of those institutes before you can apply.
  • Most AI research jobs in labs and big tech firms expect a PhD or a strong record of published papers. A master's alone may get you into applied AI roles instead.
  • Free courses from NPTEL let you test your interest before you commit to years of study. The exam for a certificate is optional and paid.
