Anaesthesiologist
A doctor who keeps patients pain-free and stable during surgery and manages ICU and pain care.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Applying physiology and pharmacology directly, minute by minute
- Being the calm person in the room when something goes wrong
- Working with surgeons, nurses and other teams, with a clear result at the end of each case
- About 8.5 years of study and training after Class 12, with tough competition for PG seats
- Night duty, emergency calls and long hours standing in the operation theatre
- High-stakes work where a small mistake can cost a life, and patients often do not remember you
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology (or Biotechnology) and English. NEET UG asks for at least 50% in PCB (40% for SC/ST/OBC, 45% for General-PwD) (reported). You must be 17 by 31 December of the admission year, and there is no upper age limit (reported).
- First degree
- MBBS (5.5 years, including a one-year compulsory internship), then MD Anaesthesiology or DNB Anaesthesiology (3 years).
- Entrance exams
- NEET UG (NTA) for MBBS. NEET PG (NBEMS) for MD/DNB seats. AIIMS-type institutes use their own INI-CET exam (reported).
- Licence or registration
- After MBBS and internship, you register with the National Medical Commission (National Medical Register) or a State Medical Council. You need this registration to practise. The MD/DNB makes you a recognised specialist.
What the work is like
Planning and giving anaesthesia for surgeries, from routine operations to heart, brain, child and transplant cases. Watching breathing, heart rate, blood pressure and pain through the operation. Running ICUs, emergency resuscitation, labour pain relief and chronic pain clinics.
A day in the work
You reach the hospital early and meet the first patient before surgery. You check their reports, ask about allergies and past illnesses, and explain what will happen. In the operation theatre you put the patient to sleep or numb the spine, then spend hours watching the monitors and adjusting drugs, fluids and oxygen with the surgeon in the room. Between cases you may see ICU patients or a woman in labour who needs pain relief, and on night duty you may be called for an emergency.
The full route: exams, training, registration
- Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English. Aim for well above 50% in PCB, since that is the minimum for NEET UG eligibility (reported). Build the habit of steady, careful study, because the training is long. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 2 · Class 12NEET UG, held by the National Testing Agency once a year. Seats are filled through national (MCC) and state counselling. You can take NEET again if you miss out, as there is no cap on attempts (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · 5.5 yearsMBBS at an NMC-recognised medical college. The last year is a compulsory rotating internship. After it, register with the NMC or your State Medical Council.
- Step 4 · Final year / internshipNEET PG, held by NBEMS. In 2026 it was a computer-based test on 30 August with 180 multiple-choice questions, and the internship had to be complete by 30 September 2026 (reported). Rank decides which college and speciality you get in counselling. AIIMS and similar institutes use INI-CET instead (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · 3 yearsMD Anaesthesiology (or DNB) as a resident doctor. NMC's training guidelines include operation theatre postings, special surgeries like cardiac and neuro, ICU posting, pain management, a thesis and final exams. You learn skills first on models and simulators, then under supervision, then on your own.
- Step 6 · After MDWork as a specialist in a government or private hospital, or as a teacher in a medical college. Many people also continue to a super-speciality.
- Optional · 3 yearsDM after MD Anaesthesia in Cardiac Anaesthesia, Neuro Anaesthesia, Paediatric and Neonatal Anaesthesia, Organ Transplant Anaesthesia and Critical Care, or Critical Care Medicine. NMC lists MD Anaesthesia as a feeder qualification for these.
Ways in
- MD Anaesthesiology (medical college)Take NEET PG, get a seat in a government, private or deemed medical college through counselling, and do 3 years of residency. This is the most common route.
- DNB Anaesthesiology (NBEMS)A 3-year course in NBEMS-accredited hospitals, filled through the same NEET PG result (reported). It is recognised as a specialist qualification, and some seats are in large non-college hospitals.
- AIIMS, PGIMER and other national institutesThese take MD students through INI-CET, a separate exam, instead of NEET PG (reported).
- Diploma (DA) then MDNMC's rules allow a 2-year Diploma in Anaesthesia, after which the MD takes 2 years. These diploma seats are reported to be ending after 2026–27, so do not plan around this route.
- NEET PG 2026 had 180 questions, down from 200 in 2025, so scores from the two years are not on the same scale (reported).
- NEET PG 2026 needed the internship to be completed by 30 September 2026. The cut-off date changes every year, so read the NBEMS bulletin for your year (reported).
- NMC's 2023 rules keep MD at 3 years, or 2 years for someone who already has the 2-year Diploma in Anaesthesia (DA). The DA seats are reported to be ending after the 2026–27 admission year.
Your real chances
For NEET PG 2026, about 2.73 lakh doctors registered and about 2.66 lakh sat the exam (NBEMS figures, reported). Seat counts differ by source, but one report puts the national total at roughly 58,000 MD/MS/DNB seats (reported). Anaesthesiology is only one of many branches, so your rank decides whether you get it.

What people earn
Earnings are modest during the long years of study and residency, then rise with experience, and they differ a lot between government jobs, big private hospitals and small-town practice, and by city and speciality.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
NMC's 2023 PG rules include disability-based reservation in PG seats, and female PG students get maternity leave as per government rules. For NEET UG the minimum PCB marks are lower for reserved categories and for General-PwD (reported). Check the NMC disability guidelines and the current NEET bulletin for which conditions are permitted for MBBS and anaesthesia training.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Learn basic first aid and CPR through your school, an Indian Red Cross unit or a local hospital's public awareness session, and practise explaining the steps to a family member.
- Class 10–12Take a free SWAYAM course on human physiology or basic health sciences, and write down three questions you would ask a doctor about how the body stays stable during surgery.Open link ↗
- College or afterIn MBBS, ask for extra time in the operation theatre and ICU, and watch how the anaesthesia team prepares the patient and monitors them.
Good to know
- An anaesthesiologist is a fully trained doctor (MBBS plus MD/DNB). If you want a shorter hospital path in the same area, look at operation theatre and anaesthesia technologist courses.
- Getting a PG seat is the hard bit. In 2026, lakhs of doctors compete for a limited number of seats across all specialities, and government seats are the most sought after.
- Anaesthesia leads to many super-specialities, such as cardiac, neuro, child, transplant and critical care. Pain medicine and ICU work are part of the field too.
- Most fee, seat and date figures on this page for NEET UG and NEET PG are (reported) from secondary summaries. Please check the NTA and NBEMS bulletins for the current year.
