Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Making quick decisions that can save a life
  • Variety: every patient and every hour is different
  • Working closely with a team of nurses, paramedics and other doctors
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Night shifts, weekends and festival-day duty are part of the job
  • Long training of 8 to 9 years after Class 12, and a tough NEET-PG rank for a seat
  • Stress: you see serious injuries and deaths, and must stay calm while scared families look to you
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English, as the NEET-UG 2026 rules require. The usual minimum is 50% in PCB together for General candidates, 40% for SC/ST/OBC and 45% for PwD (reported). Maths is not needed.
First degree
MBBS (4.5 years + 1 year compulsory internship), then a 3-year postgraduate degree: MD Emergency Medicine or DNB Emergency Medicine.
Entrance exams
NEET-UG (by NTA) for MBBS. NEET-PG (by NBEMS) for MD or DNB Emergency Medicine seats. Counselling for PG seats is common and national.
Licence or registration
You need registration with the National Medical Commission or a State Medical Council to practise as a doctor. Your MD/DNB is then added as an additional recognised qualification (reported).

What the work is like

Receiving patients in the casualty or emergency department, deciding who is sickest first (triage), and starting treatment for heart attacks, strokes, accidents, poisoning, breathing trouble and severe infections. You work with nurses, paramedics, surgeons and ICU teams, and you hand patients on to the right ward or operation theatre.

A day in the work
You arrive for a shift, often a night or a long day, and take handover from the previous team. Within minutes you may see a road-accident patient, someone with chest pain and a child with a high fever. You decide who needs help first, order tests, and start treatment such as stopping bleeding, restoring breathing or starting an ECG. Then you talk to worried families, hand patients over to the ward or ICU, and write clear notes before the shift ends.

Professional qualificationRun by National Medical Commission (NMC). You can start after: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English. Minimum time: About 8.5 years after Class 12 (5.5 years MBBS + 3 years MD/DNB), not counting any years spent preparing for entrance exams.

The full route: exams, training, registration

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English. Aim for at least 50% in PCB together if you are General category (40% for SC/ST/OBC, 45% for PwD). You must be 17 by 31 December of the year you join. There is no upper age limit. (reported — check with the official body)
  2. Step 2 · Class 12Sit NEET-UG, a single paper held once a year around May, run by NTA. Seats are then filled through national and state counselling. There is no limit on attempts. (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · 5.5 yearsMBBS at an NMC-recognised college, ending with a compulsory one-year rotating internship. You must finish it, and hold MBBS registration, before you can join a PG course.
  4. Step 4 · After internshipAppear for NEET-PG, held once a year. In 2026 it was on 30 August. You must score above the qualifying cut-off to enter counselling. Your rank then decides whether you get an Emergency Medicine seat.
  5. Step 5 · 3 yearsMD Emergency Medicine in a medical college, or DNB Emergency Medicine in an NBEMS-accredited hospital. You work as a full-time resident doctor, write a thesis and pass an exit exam.
  6. Step 6Register your PG qualification and start work as a senior resident or consultant in a hospital emergency department, trauma centre or ambulance and critical-care service. (reported — check with the official body)
  7. OptionalFurther training such as DM Critical Care. The NMC feeder list for DM Critical Care includes MD Emergency Medicine.

Ways in

  • MD Emergency MedicineTake NEET-PG, then get a seat through MCC or state counselling. You train in a medical college (government or private) for 3 years and earn a university degree.
  • DNB Emergency MedicineTake the same NEET-PG, then join an NBEMS-accredited hospital for 3 years. NBEMS runs the final exam. The DNB is treated as equivalent to an MD (reported). Some teaching posts may carry extra conditions, so check current rules.
Recently changed, or still changing
  • NEET-PG 2026 was held on 30 August 2026. The general qualifying cut-off was 262 out of 720, and the result showed both raw score and rank.
  • PG training rules now come from the NMC's Post-Graduate Medical Education Regulations 2023. It sets common counselling for all PG seats in the country.

Your real chances

In 2026, about 2.66 lakh doctors appeared for NEET-PG. It decides seats for all MD, MS and DNB branches. A separate seat count for Emergency Medicine alone could not be confirmed from an official source, but it is a small branch.

What people earn

Earnings depend on whether you work in a government hospital, a private or corporate hospital or a trauma centre, and they rise with years of experience and with the city you work in. A resident doctor in training earns a stipend, which is much lower than a senior specialist's income.

Myth and fact

Myth: Emergency doctors only handle dramatic, life-or-death cases, like in films.
Fact: Some cases are critical, but much of the work is calm, careful assessment of fevers, fractures, breathlessness and pain. Then you decide who needs urgent care and who can safely go home.

For girls and students with disabilities

For NEET-PG 2026, the qualifying cut-off was lower for PwBD candidates (244 out of 720 for General PwBD) and for SC/ST/OBC candidates (226) than for General (262). NMC PG rules also allow certain benchmark disabilities, with conditions, and give female PG students maternity leave as per government rules. Emergency work is physically demanding, so students with disabilities should check the NMC rules and talk to a doctor about the fit.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Learn basic first aid (how to stop bleeding, help someone who is choking, and what to do after a burn) from a school health teacher or a Red Cross unit. Practise explaining it to a family member.Open link ↗
  • Class 10–12Read the NCERT Class 11 and 12 Biology chapters on human physiology (breathing, heart, circulation) and make a one-page chart of what happens in a heart attack. This builds the base for NEET.Open link ↗
  • College or afterJoin your college's first-aid, blood-donation or disaster-response volunteer group, and spend time during rotations in the casualty ward watching how triage works. Ask a senior emergency doctor what a normal shift looks like.

Good to know

  • A doctor with only an MBBS can work in casualty, and many do. A specialist emergency physician has the extra 3-year MD/DNB.
  • Emergency Medicine is a newer branch in India. The NMC has said every MBBS-teaching college must have an Emergency Medicine department, so the number of posts and PG seats is growing (reported).
  • Seats in this branch are fewer than in older branches like Medicine, and each college has only a few. Your NEET-PG rank decides what you get, so keep other branches in mind as a back-up.
  • NEET-UG and NEET-PG scores are valid only for that year's admissions. You have to sit the exam again if you want to retry.
