Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Seeing a plain fabric turn into finished garments that go out on time
  • Solving problems quickly, such as a line running slow or a fit issue
  • Working with people on the floor, from machine operators to buyers
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Long or early factory hours, especially close to a buyer's deadline
  • Pressure from buyers, tight margins and frequent last-minute changes
  • Hot, noisy factory floors and a lot of time standing
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 with Maths. Most NIFT and college listings also ask for Physics and Chemistry (PCM), so check the bulletin for your year. Some NIFT material asks only for Maths. Or a 3–4 year engineering diploma for lateral entry (reported).
First degree
B.F.Tech (Apparel Production), a 4-year programme (reported).
Entrance exams
NIFTEE, the NIFT Entrance Examination run by NTA. For B.F.Tech, candidates sit GAT only (Section A and Section B). Private colleges may use JEE Main, state CETs or their own tests (reported).
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Planning garment production runs, checking patterns and fit, running quality checks, tracking deadlines and shipments, and managing workers, machines and suppliers in factories and export houses.

A day in the work
The day often starts with a check of the previous day's output, rejects and machine stoppages on the shop floor. You then meet the pattern and sampling team to fix a fit problem before a buyer's approval. Through the afternoon you update delivery schedules, talk to suppliers about fabric and trims, and handle a line that has fallen behind. The day ends with a quality review and a plan for the next day's cutting and sewing.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 9–12Keep Maths and Science strong. Learn basic stitching or visit a garment unit or tailor to see how clothes are cut and sewn. Aim for steady marks, since many colleges ask for 50–60% overall (reported).
  2. Step 2 · Class 12 (now to 16 November 2026)Register for NIFTEE 2027 on the NTA portal. The normal fee window closes 16 November 2026, with a late fee until 21 November 2026. The age limit is under 24 years on 1 August of the admission year (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · Class 12 (January 2027)Sit the NIFTEE exam on 10 January 2027 (reported). B.F.Tech candidates take GAT only, in two sections: a computer-based test and a second section with a shorter question set. (reported — check with the official body)
  4. Step 4 · February–April 2027Stage 1 results come out around February or March 2027 (tentative). Shortlisted candidates move to the next stage. Check the bulletin to see whether B.F.Tech has one (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · May–July 2027Take part in NIFT counselling online. You fill in your course and campus choices, submit documents, and pay the seat acceptance fee. In 2026, counselling ran from June to July and had spot rounds.
  6. Step 6 · 4 yearsStudy B.F.Tech (Apparel Production). Subjects cover garment construction, pattern making, production planning, quality and supply chain, with internships in factories or export units (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  7. Step 7 · After graduationStart as a production, quality or merchandising executive on the factory floor. Manager roles usually come after several years of hands-on experience. (reported — check with the official body)

Ways in

  • RouteB.F.Tech (Apparel Production) at NIFT campuses, entered through NIFTEE.
  • RouteB.Tech in Textile or Fashion Technology at engineering colleges, entered through JEE Main, state CETs or college tests (reported).
  • RouteLateral entry into the third semester of B.F.Tech for students with a 3–4 year engineering diploma, through NIFT's lateral entry scheme (NLEA).

Your real chances

NTA reports that about 21,300 candidates registered for the NIFTEE 2026 Stage 1 exam across all programmes (reported). B.F.Tech had 591 seats in 2026 according to NIFT's seat matrix. A separate applicant count for B.F.Tech was not found.

What people earn

Pay depends on the factory or export house, its size and city, and your experience; entry jobs pay much less than senior production roles, and exporters in big hubs often pay more.

Myth and fact

Myth: You must be a great artist to become an apparel production manager.
Fact: Drawing helps but is not the main skill. B.F.Tech entry is tested through GAT, and the job mostly needs planning, numbers, quality checks and people skills.

For girls and students with disabilities

NIFT reserves seats for SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), EWS and persons with 40% or more disability. The 2026 reports list 15%, 7.5%, 27%, 10% and 5% (horizontal) for these groups (reported). SC, ST and PwD candidates also get a 5-year age relaxation (reported).

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Watch how a shirt or kurta is cut and stitched at a local tailor or garment shop. Note the steps in a notebook and ask the tailor what goes wrong most often.
  • Class 10–12Take a free course on manufacturing or textiles on NPTEL, which has many engineering courses for free. Watch a few lectures to see how production lines are planned.Open link ↗
  • College or afterRead the NIFTEE information bulletin for the current year. Check the B.F.Tech eligibility, exam sections and campus list before you decide.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • NIFT's B.F.Tech is a technical course, not only a design course. Maths and production skills matter as much as sketching.
  • NIFT's 2026 NTA notice lists B.F.Tech as Apparel Production, Technology and Manufacturing. Check the current year's bulletin for exact subject rules.
  • Some NIFT material says there is no limit on the number of NIFTEE attempts (reported). Check the bulletin to confirm.
  • Entry-level jobs in factories and export houses are common. Management jobs come with experience and sometimes an extra qualification.
