  • Seeing your designs in stores, shows or on real people
It may not suit you if you dislike

Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 (10+2) in any stream from a recognised board. Mathematics is not needed for B.Des; NIFT asks for Maths only for its B.F.Tech course. Lateral entry is open to certain diploma holders instead. A drawing habit and a good eye for colour help more than any one subject.
First degree
B.Des (Fashion Design), 4 years, full-time and on campus. NIFT campuses offer it, and so does the National Institute of Design (NID). Some private design schools also run B.Des courses.
Entrance exams
NIFTEE, run by NTA for NIFT: a General Ability Test (GAT) and a Creative Ability Test (CAT), then a hands-on Situation Test for shortlisted candidates. NID has its own entrance, the NID DAT.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Sketching designs, choosing fabrics and colours, making patterns and samples, attending fittings, and working with production teams and buyers. Some designers work for brands, some freelance, and some start their own label.

A day in the work
A designer working for a brand often starts with a short team meeting about the season's theme. Much of the morning goes on sketches, mood boards and fabric swatches. The afternoon may bring a fitting with a sample, a pattern fix with a tailor, and a call with the production team about cost and deadlines. The day ends with a review of new samples and a list of changes for tomorrow.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 9–12Keep a sketchbook and practise drawing clothes, people and colour every week. Note your date of birth now, because NIFT's upper age limit for B.Des is strict: under 24 on 1 August of the admission year.
  2. Step 2 · Class 12 (or after)Register for NIFTEE through the NTA portal. For 2027 entry, registration is reported to run from October to mid-November 2026, with the exam on 10 January 2027. Stage 1 for B.Des is GAT (30%) and CAT (50%), per the official 2026 rules. (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · Stage 2 (for shortlisted candidates)Shortlisted candidates take a Situation Test: hands-on model-making with given materials. It counts for 20% of the B.Des score under the official 2026 rules. Final merit is reported to combine both stages. (reported — check with the official body)
  4. Step 4 · After resultsSeats are allotted through online counselling run by NIC, and state domicile rules can decide which quota a seat falls under. Read the seat allocation notice for the year you apply, because the rules change between years.
  5. Step 5 · 4 years of B.DesStudy a fashion design specialisation through studio projects, fabric and pattern work, and a final collection. Start building a portfolio from the first year, because it shapes your later jobs and any master's application.
  6. Optional · After B.DesA 2-year M.Des or a master's in fashion management is available. Some NIFT postgraduate programmes have no upper age limit.

What people earn

Starting pay for new fashion designers is usually modest and rises with experience, the size and type of employer, and the city; large brands and senior creative roles pay the most, while freelancers' income can swing from month to month.

Myth and fact

Myth: Fashion designers spend their days sewing clothes by hand.
Fact: Stitching and pattern-making are part of the job, but much of the work is research, sketching, choosing fabrics, planning costs and coordinating with a team. Many designers spend more time on screens and in meetings than at a sewing machine.

For girls and students with disabilities

The upper age limit is relaxed by 5 years for SC, ST and PwD candidates. NIFT also keeps two supernumerary B.Des seats per campus for the Artisan category, which needs an Artisan card in the applicant's or a parent's name.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Keep a sketchbook for one month. Draw one outfit a day and write down which fabric you think it would need.
  • Class 10–12Read the NIFTEE 2026 Information Bulletin and list the topics in the CAT and GAT. Then practise 30 minutes of timed sketching a day.Open link ↗
  • College or afterIf you hold a diploma, check whether lateral entry fits you. Otherwise, build a small portfolio of sketches and simple paper or card models to prepare for the Situation Test.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • NIFT's upper age limit for B.Des is under 24 on 1 August of the year you join. Relaxations apply only to SC, ST and PwD candidates.
  • You do not need Mathematics for B.Des. Maths is for the B.F.Tech course, which is a different programme.
  • Your portfolio and your Situation Test performance matter as much as your marks. Practise making models with simple materials such as paper and card.
