Is this for me?
- Making decisions with numbers and seeing whether they work in the market.
- Spotting what customers want before it becomes a trend.
- Working across teams and solving problems under deadlines.
- Deadlines and seasonal rush periods can mean late evenings.
- Frequent travel to factories, sourcing hubs or stores is common in some roles.
- Targets and sales pressure can be stressful, and success depends on the market.
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 in any stream for the B.Des route at NIFT, with Maths not needed. A BBA in fashion also takes any Class 12 stream, though individual colleges set their own rules. The two-year MFM, which is the NIFT course in fashion management, needs a graduate degree first. B.F.Tech, the NIFT technology course, needs Physics, Chemistry and Maths.
- First degree
- B.Des (4 years) at NIFT, or a BBA in fashion at a college. Fashion management at NIFT is a two-year postgraduate course (MFM), not a B.Des.
- Entrance exams
- For NIFT B.Des: the NIFTEE entrance by NTA, with a General Ability Test and a Creative Ability Test, then a Situation Test for shortlisted candidates. BBA admissions depend on each college.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Deciding which styles, colours and sizes a store or brand should buy, planning how many units to order, and setting prices. Checking sales figures each week and moving stock between stores. Working with designers, sourcing teams, factories and store staff to meet deadlines. Keeping track of trends and competitor prices.
A day in the work
The day often starts with checking the previous day's sales and stock levels for your product range. Mid-morning may go to a meeting with designers or sourcing teams about next season's samples, prices and delivery dates. Afternoons are spent on order sheets, supplier calls and checking whether factories are on schedule. The day ends with a short report on what sold, what did not, and what to change next week.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 10–12Keep Maths and English strong, since you will read sales figures and write plans. Notice how shops arrange, price and sell clothes, and follow fashion business news. For the B.Des route, any Class 12 stream is fine.
- Step 2 · Class 12Apply to NIFT through NTA's NIFTEE. The B.Des test has a General Ability Test and a Creative Ability Test, and shortlisted candidates sit a Situation Test. Check the official notice for the year's dates and age limit, which is below 24 as of 1 August of the admission year. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · 4 yearsStudy B.Des at a NIFT campus, or a BBA in fashion at another college. Merchandising is taught as part of some B.Des tracks, such as Global Retail Fashion Business, and as part of BBA courses. Check the syllabus before you join. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · During and after the degreeTake internships with brands, export houses or retail chains. Keep a folder of your work, such as a sales analysis or a range plan. Most first jobs are assistant or junior merchandiser roles. (reported — check with the official body)
- Optional · After graduationA two-year Master of Fashion Management (MFM) covers buying, merchandising, sourcing, retail and brand management. You need a graduate degree in any discipline to apply. (reported — check with the official body)
