What the work is like

Treating soldiers, officers and their families in military dental centres and hospitals: check-ups, fillings, extractions, root canals, dentures and oral surgery. Also checking dental fitness of troops, plus normal officer duties and postings across India.

A day in the work
You start with parade or physical training, then open your dental chair at the unit's dental centre. Through the morning you see soldiers for check-ups, fillings, extractions or root canals. Some days you also treat officers' families and check dental fitness for troops going on postings. In the afternoon there is paperwork, officer-level duties and sometimes a medical camp. Postings can be in a city cantonment or a remote or high-altitude station.

Professional qualificationRun by Dental Council of India (DCI) and State Dental Councils. You can start after: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Minimum time: 5 years after Class 12 (4 years BDS + 1 year internship) before you can even apply.

The full route: exams, training, registration

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English. Dentistry is a medical course, so Biology matters.
  2. Step 2 · Class 12Take NEET UG and join counselling for a BDS seat in a Dental Council of India-recognised college. Without NEET UG there is no BDS seat. (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · 4 years + 1 yearComplete BDS, then the one-year paid rotating internship in a dental college. Then take permanent registration with your State Dental Council. The Dental Council of India regulations make the internship compulsory after the final BDS exam.
  4. Step 4 · Year you applyAppear in that year's NEET (MDS), even if you do not plan to do an MDS. The Army checks your score with the exam body. In 2026 the test was on 2 May. Then apply online at join.afms.gov.in. In 2026 the window ran from 22 September to 22 October, and the fee was ₹200 (reported). Dates move each year, so watch the site.
  5. Step 5 · Shortlisting and interviewCandidates are shortlisted by NEET (MDS) score (reported). The interview is held by a Selection Board in New Delhi (reported). The final merit list is made only from interview marks. Offers go strictly in order of merit.
  6. Step 6 · MedicalA Medical Board checks you against Armed Forces standards. Only candidates declared fit are commissioned.
  7. Step 7 · Commission, training and probationYou are commissioned as a Captain. Training is at the AMC Centre & College, Lucknow, at government expense. Probation lasts 12 months. The Short Service Commission is for five years and can be extended up to 14 years (reported). After 2 years you may apply for limited Permanent Commission vacancies.

Ways in

  • BDS, then Short Service CommissionThe usual way. Finish BDS and internship, appear in NEET (MDS), apply, interview, medical, then commission as Captain.
  • MDS first, then Short Service CommissionDo a 3-year MDS and then apply. In 2026, MDS holders could claim up to 3 years of earlier seniority, and the brochure says they are promoted to substantive Major after 1 year 6 months. The trade-off is that you join later.
  • Short Service Commission, then Departmental Permanent CommissionAfter 2 years as an SSC officer you can apply for the few Permanent Commission vacancies. You must be under 30 (BDS) or 35 (MDS) on 31 December of the year you apply. Vacancies are limited.
Recently changed, or still changing
  • The Army's conditions change every year. In 2026 the brochure asked for internship completed by 30 June 2026, registration valid till 31 December 2026, and appearance in NEET (MDS)-2026.
  • The 2026 brochure asked BDS applicants for at least 55% in final-year BDS. MDS holders are not judged on that figure.

Your real chances

In 2026, the Army advertised only 37 vacancies for the whole country, for both men and women. We could not find an official count of applicants, but with so few seats, expect heavy competition.

What people earn

Official pay

Captain on entry: Pay Level 10B, ₹61,300–₹1,20,900 basic + Military Service Pay ₹15,500 + Non-Practising Allowance + DA and other allowances (7th CPC) (reported). We could not read the pay table on the official page, so check the emoluments section of the latest brochure.

Officer pay is fixed by rank and grows with promotion and posting allowances, so it is steadier than private clinic income. Private dentists can earn more or less depending on city, patient numbers and years of practice.

Myth and fact

Myth: Once you join the Army Dental Corps, you have a permanent job till retirement.
Fact: The usual entry is a Short Service Commission, which is time-bound: five years, extendable up to 14 years (reported). Permanent Commission is possible after 2 years, but only for limited vacancies and within age limits.

For girls and students with disabilities

The 2026 brochure invites both men and women to apply for the Short Service Commission. Women and men have separate minimum height standards at the medical stage (reported). Everyone must be declared fit by the Armed Forces Medical Board, so there is no special concession for disability. Any relaxation is decided by that board.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Draw a labelled diagram of a tooth and its layers, then teach a younger family member a proper brushing routine. This tests whether you like the detail of the work.
  • Class 10–12Read the free NCERT Class 11 and 12 Biology chapters on the human body and health. Dentistry rests on this base, and NEET UG is built on it.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • The Army Dental Corps takes civilian dentists who already hold a BDS or MDS. There is no entry straight after Class 12 into this Corps.
  • This is a Short Service Commission, not a job for life. Permanent Commission vacancies are limited, so have a plan for life after service.
  • The 2026 brochure says serving as an officer comes with transfers anywhere in India. Check the latest brochure for current rules on postings, extensions and benefits.
  • Wanting the armed forces but not dentistry? Look at the Armed Forces Medical Services doctor entries, or at the regular Army, Navy and Air Force officer routes.
