Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Taking responsibility for keeping people safe
- Working in a team with clear rules and a clear purpose
- Learning how security technology and threats change over time
- Long standing hours and night shifts, often on rotation
- Repeated checks that can feel slow or tedious, and passengers who get angry
- Strict rules, regular refresher tests, and jobs that depend on contracts
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 in any stream is the usual minimum for entry-level airport security jobs. Some screener drives ask for a graduate degree in any stream instead. Your English, communication and fitness matter as much as your marks.
- First degree
- No fixed degree. Class 12 works for some roles; some 2026 screener openings ask for graduation (reported).
- Entrance exams
- No national entrance exam. Employers run their own selection. After you are hired, the BCAS Basic AVSEC course ends with a test you must pass, and you get a limited number of attempts.
- Licence or registration
- A BCAS-recognised Basic AVSEC certificate is needed before you can work in restricted airport areas. It must be renewed through refresher training and a refresher exam.
What the work is like
Screening passengers, hand baggage, checked baggage and cargo at airport checkpoints. Checking airport entry passes, watching for prohibited items, reporting suspicious behaviour, and following strict BCAS rules at all times.
A day in the work
You start your shift at a screening lane, often early in the morning or at night, and check in with your supervisor. You watch X-ray images of hand baggage, check bags by hand when needed, and check passes at staff entry points. When something looks wrong, you stop the item or person and call your supervisor. You finish with a handover to the next shift.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 10–12Finish Class 12 in any stream with good English and basic computer skills. Keep yourself fit: airport employers check height, reach and general fitness, and some ask for a medical certificate.
- Step 2 · Graduation (if you can)Many airport employers prefer a graduate degree, and some 2026 screener openings require one (reported). A degree in any stream is accepted. NCC experience is noted as a plus in at least one airport notice. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · HiringApply to an airport operator, security agency, airline or cargo company that is hiring security staff. You usually cannot enrol in the BCAS course on your own. The employer must nominate you.
- Step 4 · Basic AVSEC course and testAfter joining, you attend the BCAS-approved Basic AVSEC course at an approved institute, such as the Indian Aviation Academy. The course ends with a test. One 2024 airport notice asked for 80%, so the passing mark can depend on the employer. You get a limited number of attempts.
- Step 5 · Medical fitness and on-the-job trainingSelected candidates must submit a medical fitness certificate. You then work under supervision and may take further screener training before handling X-ray images and screening machines on your own.
- Step 6 · Refresher training every few yearsTo keep your certificate and airport access active, you must complete a refresher course and pass its exam before the validity period ends. The IAA lists a Basic Refresher course for this purpose.
