What the work is like
Guarding railway stations, trains and railway property. Watching crowds, helping passengers in trouble, stopping theft and trespassing, and catching offenders. SIs lead small teams, handle cases and paperwork, and supervise constables.
A day in the work
You report for your duty shift at a station or on a train, often in uniform and sometimes at night. You walk the platforms, watch crowds, check for theft, touts and trespassing, and help lost or ill passengers. If something happens, such as a bag snatching or a stranded child, you act first and write the report after. SIs also run the post, assign duties and handle case files.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 8–12Finish Class 10 for the Constable post, or finish a degree in any subject for the SI post. The age range in the 2024 notice was 20–28 years for SI as on 1 July 2024. Constable was reported as 18–28 years. Start running, skipping and long-jump practice early, because the physical test is a real hurdle.
- Step 2 · When a notice comes outApply online only, through the official website of any RRB. The 2024 SI window was 15 April to 14 May 2024. Vacancies do not open every year, so keep checking rpf.indianrailways.gov.in and your RRB's website. Apply once only, because multiple applications lead to rejection of all of them. We could not confirm a newer 2026 notice.
- Step 3 · Computer Based TestA written test on a computer. Papers are commonly reported to cover general awareness, arithmetic and reasoning, with negative marking. Check the exact pattern in the notice you apply under. In the 2024 SI cycle, the CBT was held in December 2024 (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · Physical tests (PET/PMT)Only shortlisted candidates are called. PMT checks height and chest. PET tests running and jumping. The official notice says PET is mandatory and qualifying only, with no marks, but you must pass it. Standards differ for men and women, and some categories get relaxations. Read the notice's table carefully.
- Step 5 · Document Verification and medicalYour original certificates are checked only after you clear all earlier stages. You must also meet the medical standard for the post (category B-1 in the 2024 SI notice). The notice says that anyone found medically unsuitable gets no alternative job.
- Step 6 · Training and postingSelected candidates go to RPF training and are then posted to a railway zone. Zone allotment is by merit and preference. Details of the training period and stipend were not on the official pages we could read, so check your appointment letter. (reported — check with the official body)
Ways in
- Constable (after Class 10)The earliest way in. You need Class 10 pass and must be in the age range in the notice. The selection stages are the same: CBT, PET/PMT, then documents and medical. There are far more Constable posts than SI posts.
- Sub-Inspector (after graduation)You need any bachelor's degree and must be 20–28 years old (2024 notice). The pay level is higher and you lead teams. You must be graduate on or before the last date to apply. Final-year students waiting for results should not apply.

Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Women can apply, and the notice keeps separate vacancies and physical standards for women and for ex-servicemen. The 2024 SI notice marked the SI post as not suitable for persons with disabilities, so check the latest notice before you plan for it.

Good to know
- RPF jobs are advertised only when the Railway Recruitment Boards release a notice. Some years there is no notice, so do not plan your whole life around one date.
- Age relaxations exist for some categories. They are listed in the notice, so check the one you are applying under.
- RPF is not the same as GRP (Government Railway Police). GRP is part of the state police. RPF is a central force under the Railways.
- Candidates found medically unfit are not given any other post, so keep your eyesight, fitness and general health in good order.
