Is this for me?
- Talking with patients for a long time and helping them change daily habits
- Mixing science subjects with yoga, food and lifestyle
- Preventive health and wellness work, not only emergencies
- A 5½-year course with Biology and many medical subjects, plus NEET preparation
- Public trust and scientific evidence for some natural therapies are debated, so you must be honest about what the treatment can and cannot do
- Jobs and registration rules differ by state, and government posts are fewer than in MBBS or BAMS
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, usually with at least 50% marks (often 45% or 40% for reserved categories; it differs by state and college). Minimum age is usually 17 at admission. (reported: from college and counselling websites, not an official notice)
- First degree
- B.N.Y.S. (Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences), 5½ years: 4½ years of study plus 1 year of rotating internship.
- Entrance exams
- NEET UG (NTA) is used for BNYS admission in most states, with counselling by your state authority. Some private universities say NEET is not needed. Check the rule for your state and college before you pay anything. (reported)
- Licence or registration
- BNYS graduates register with their state's board or council where one exists. Rules differ from state to state, and there is no single national council for naturopathy yet. Central registration through the Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCRYN) is also mentioned by colleges. Check the current position with your state AYUSH department. (reported)
What the work is like
Treating lifestyle problems such as obesity, diabetes, back pain, stress and digestive troubles. The tools are yoga, breathing practice, diet planning, hydrotherapy, mud therapy, massage and fasting advice. Work happens in OPDs, naturopathy hospitals, wellness centres and your own clinic.
A day in the work
You start the morning in the OPD, listening to patients with problems like high weight, sugar, back pain or poor sleep. You look at their reports and habits, then write a plan with diet changes, yoga and breathing practice, and treatments such as hot-and-cold water therapy or mud packs. Through the day you supervise therapists doing massage and hydrotherapy, take a short yoga class for patients, and check how each person is improving. Some evenings go to counselling and follow-ups, because most of this work is helping people change daily habits.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 10–11Choose Science with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Without Biology you cannot enter this course.
- Step 2 · Class 12Pass Class 12 PCB with the minimum marks your target college asks for, usually around 50%. Marks needed differ by state and college. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · Class 12 (NEET year)Appear for NEET UG and then join your state's AYUSH counselling. Some central and deemed universities use AACCC counselling. A few private universities advertise 'no NEET'. Ask your state's counselling authority whether that is valid before you pay. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · 4½ yearsBNYS study at a recognised college. The Ministry of AYUSH describes the years as pre-clinical, para-clinical and then two years of clinical subjects. You learn anatomy and physiology first, then naturopathy and yoga treatments.
- Step 5 · 1 yearRotating internship in hospitals. This is compulsory and you treat real patients under supervision.
- Step 6Register with your state board or council, and with CCRYN if you want central registration, before you practise. (reported — check with the official body)
- OptionalMD in Naturopathy or Yoga (3 years), or an MSc, MPH or MBA in healthcare or yoga therapy. Rules and seats vary by university. (reported — check with the official body)

What people earn
Earnings usually start modest and rise slowly with experience, and they depend on whether you work in a government hospital, a private wellness centre or resort, or build your own clinic in a city with steady patients.
Myth and fact
Try it now
- Class 7–9Keep a one-week food-and-sleep diary for yourself and your family. Note which habits help you feel better. Add 10 minutes of simple stretching or breathing with a trusted teacher.
- Class 10–12Read the NCERT Class 11 and 12 Biology chapters on human physiology and digestion. They are free, and the BNYS course starts with these ideas.Open link ↗
- College or afterWatch a free SWAYAM course on yoga, nutrition or public health to see which part of wellness work interests you. Then ask a registered naturopathy doctor if you can observe an OPD morning.Open link ↗
Good to know
- BNYS is not MBBS. BNYS doctors practise naturopathy and yoga only, and are not trained for surgery or emergency modern medicine. (reported)
- Naturopathy is the one AYUSH stream that was left out of the NCISM law, so recognition and registration depend more on your state. Always check that the college is affiliated to a state health university or a UGC-recognised university.
- Be careful of 'distance' or 'online' BNYS. It needs regular classes and hospital training, and colleges that offer it by distance are not a safe choice. (reported)
- The Ministry of AYUSH page lists about 250 naturopathy and yoga hospitals in India. That page is older, and the real number of jobs is smaller than for MBBS or BAMS.
