What the work is like

Planning and adjusting diets for patients with diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease and other conditions in hospitals. Also advising healthy clients in fitness centres, food companies, schools or private practice. Counselling families, checking hospital kitchen meals, and working with doctors and nurses.

A day in the work
A clinical dietitian usually starts with a list of patients and their lab reports. They then write or change a diet for someone with diabetes or kidney disease and explain it in the patient's own language. Later they may counsel families, check the hospital kitchen's meals, or talk with doctors about how to feed a patient who cannot eat normally.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 10–12Take Physics, Chemistry and Biology in Class 11 and 12. Keep your marks steady. Most colleges want about 45–50% overall, and some ask for more.
  2. Step 2 · Class 12Apply to B.Sc Nutrition and Dietetics programmes. Some colleges use CUET-UG, some use state or university tests, and many admit on Class 12 marks. Check each college's own rules.
  3. Step 3 · 3 yearsComplete the B.Sc Nutrition and Dietetics degree. It includes lab work, food science, human physiology and placements in hospitals or food businesses.
  4. Step 4 · About 2 yearsMany clinical and senior posts expect an M.Sc in Nutrition and Dietetics. Some students take it straight after the B.Sc. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · After studyComplete a supervised hospital internship, usually about six months. Then you can sit the Indian Dietetic Association's Registered Dietitian exam if you want that credential. (reported — check with the official body)

What people earn

Earnings vary a lot by qualification, city and employer. A fresh graduate usually earns less than someone with an M.Sc, an RD credential and several years in a hospital or a well-known brand.

Myth and fact

Myth: Anyone who calls themselves a dietitian or nutritionist can safely treat a disease with diet.
Fact: In India the title is not legally protected, but treating a diagnosed illness through diet needs a proper degree, supervised hospital training and, for many posts, the RD credential. A short online course does not provide this.

For girls and students with disabilities

Some colleges offer merit scholarships and extra help for women and SC/ST students (reported). No physical standards or special quotas apply to this career itself.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9For three school days, note what you eat and sort it into food groups. Then talk with a family cook about one change to try.
  • Class 10–12Read the NCAHP competency curriculum for Nutrition and Dietetics. Look at what subjects a degree covers, such as food science, physiology and biochemistry.Open link ↗
  • College or afterRead the NCAHP Act's Schedule to see how dieticians and nutritionists are named in law. Then compare two colleges' fee pages and internship details.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • There is no state or central licence for dietitians yet. The NCAHP Act 2021 names dieticians and nutritionists, but its registers for this group are still being set up (reported).
  • Registered Dietitian (RD) is a credential from the Indian Dietetic Association, not a government licence. Many hospital dietetics posts ask for it (reported).
  • Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist. A degree, supervised training and a professional body's credential are what show real skill.
  • Check a course's approval before you pay. The NCAHP Act limits nutrition degrees to regular, in-person study (reported).
