What the work is like
Leading small teams in a force such as BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP or SSB. Typical work is guarding borders, installations and VIPs, internal security duty, patrols, inquiries, paperwork, and training and supervising constables. You can be posted anywhere in India.
A day in the work
Your day depends on the force and the posting. At a border outpost, you might brief your team at dawn, plan the day's patrol or guard roster and check weapons and equipment. Later you could review reports, handle paperwork and speak to local officials. In a CISF unit at an airport or plant, you supervise the security checks and handle anything unusual, such as an unattended bag or a dispute at a gate. Evenings often mean physical training with your men, and duty can stretch into nights, festivals and emergencies.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 11–12Take any stream you like. Start a daily fitness habit now: running, long jump and general strength. The physical tests are strict, and Class 11–12 is a good time to begin.
- Step 2 · 3 years after Class 12Finish a bachelor's degree in any subject. SSC's 2026 notice asks for a degree from a recognised university. Final-year students may apply if they have the degree by the closing date of applications. The age limit is 20–25 years as on 1 August 2026, with relaxation for SC, ST, OBC and ex-servicemen (age limit and relaxations reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · Paper-I (computer-based)Apply online on ssc.gov.in when the notice comes out. The 2026 notice was released on 10 September, and applications closed on 30 September 2026. The 2026 Paper-I is proposed for late November 2026. It has 100 questions in reasoning, general awareness, maths and English, with negative marking (pattern reported). Paper-I only shortlists you for the physical tests. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · Physical tests (PST and PET)Height and chest are measured, then you run, jump and put the shot. These tests are mandatory and qualifying. The 2026 notice sets the general male standard at 170 cm height and 80–85 cm chest. Other standards and event timings are reported: for example, men run 100 m in 16 seconds and 1.6 km in 6.5 minutes, and women run 100 m in 18 seconds and 800 m in 4 minutes. Ex-servicemen are exempt from the PET (reported). The notice also says you must not have knock knee, flat foot, varicose veins or squint. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · Paper-IIA second computer-based paper for those who qualify the physical tests. Final merit is based on it, with bonus marks for NCC certificate holders (reported). Before the final result you must also give your preferred forces, such as BSF, CISF, CRPF, ITBP or SSB, and Delhi Police for those eligible. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · Medical and document checkA Detailed Medical Examination, then document verification by the forces. You must be in good mental and bodily health with no defect that would affect your duties. The notice says success in the exam gives no right to appointment until the government is satisfied you are suitable in all respects.
- Step 7 · Training and probationSelected candidates train at the allotted force's training institutions, then serve a probation period. The 2026 notice says final selects must pass seven obstacle events during training, or they may not be retained in the force. Training length differs by force and was not confirmed from an official page. (reported — check with the official body)
Your real chances
In 2026, SSC's notice listed 1,871 tentative vacancies: 1,320 SI (GD) in the CAPFs (CRPF 254, BSF 457, ITBP 187, CISF 250, SSB 172), 317 in Delhi Police and 234 SI (Fire) in CISF. The exact vacancy split was read from SSC's notice and aggregator tables. I could not find an official count of how many people applied, but lakhs of graduates usually compete for a few thousand posts.

Starting pay is the same across all the forces, but take-home changes a lot with your posting, because city and border-area allowances differ, and it grows steadily with promotions and years of service.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Women can apply: the 2026 notice lists 147 CAPF SI (GD) posts for women and 112 SI (Executive) posts in Delhi Police for women, and women do not need the driving licence for Delhi Police. Women have easier physical standards, and no application fee (reported). Reported SC/ST relaxation is 5 years in age and OBC 3 years. All candidates must meet the medical standards.

Good to know
- SSC CPO has no interview. Selection is by two computer-based papers, physical tests and a medical exam. You list force preferences before the final result, and your rank decides where you land.
- The same exam fills Delhi Police SI posts. Men need a valid LMV (motorcycle and car) driving licence on the day of the physical tests to be considered for Delhi Police. Men without one can still be considered for CAPF posts only.
- SSC says vacancies are tentative and that selected candidates can be posted anywhere in India. The notice says the Commission does not allot state-wise or city-wise posts.
- Pattern, age and fee details change between years, so always read the latest SSC notice on ssc.gov.in before you plan.
