What the work is like

Stopping smuggling of gold, drugs, foreign currency and banned goods. Checking passengers, baggage and cargo at airports, seaports, land borders and coastal areas. Collecting intelligence, searching, seizing goods and writing up cases. Working in uniform under senior Customs officers.

A day in the work
You might start a shift at an international airport, watching passengers arriving from abroad and checking bags flagged by the team. A tip-off or a scanner alert may make you search a bag, question the passenger and call a senior officer. If something illegal is found, you seize it, record statements and write a panchnama (a written record of the search) so the case holds up later. On quieter days you handle files, reports and cargo checks, and some duties may come at night.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12Choose any stream you do well in. Build a daily habit of walking, cycling or sport, because the job has a physical test. Also read newspapers and practise basic Maths and English. Height and weight standards apply for this post, so check them early (reported).
  2. Step 2 · 3 years after Class 12Complete a bachelor's degree in any subject. SSC CGL 2026 asks for a graduate degree from a recognised university. The age limit for this post is 18–30 years as on 1 August 2026, with relaxation for OBC, SC/ST and PwD candidates (reported).
  3. Step 3 · Apply, then Tier-IApply online at ssc.gov.in. The 2026 fee was ₹100, and women, SC, ST, PwBD and eligible ex-servicemen paid nothing. Tier-I is a computer-based test on Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English, with 0.50 marks cut for each wrong answer. In 2026 it ran from 30 September to 30 October. The notice does not say how many marks Tier-I counts for the final rank, so check the notice.
  4. Step 4 · Tier-IIThe CGL 2026 notice gave December 2026 as the tentative month. Paper-I is compulsory for all posts. It covers Maths and Reasoning, English and General Awareness, and a Computer Knowledge Test. For Preventive Officer, the computer standard is reportedly higher than for most posts. Your Tier-II rank, plus the post preference you give, decides whether you get this job. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · After Tier-IIDocuments are checked. The department then tests your physical standards and fitness. Men need 157.5 cm height and 81 cm chest (with 5 cm expansion), and must walk 1,600 m in 15 minutes and cycle 8 km in 30 minutes. Women need 152 cm height and 48 kg weight, and must walk 1 km in 20 minutes and cycle 3 km in 25 minutes. These are pass/fail tests. A medical check follows. Failing the standards means losing the post even with good marks. (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · Induction trainingYou train at a NACIN (National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes and Narcotics) zonal campus. NACIN Chennai started a 14-week induction course for Preventive Officers and Examiners in August 2026. The module covers Customs law, investigation, search and seizure, airport procedures and Customs sniffer-dog (K9) work. It also includes drill, arms and police-academy style physical training, and field attachments at airports and seaports.
  7. Step 7 · Probation and postingProbation is reportedly 2 years. Postings are in Customs formations such as airports, seaports, land customs stations and coastal units. Zones are allotted by merit and your preference (reported). Promotion to higher posts follows departmental rules. (reported — check with the official body)

Your real chances

In 2026, SSC said more than 28 lakh candidates had applied for CGL by 22 June 2026 (reported by news from SSC's notice). Applicants are for all posts, not only this one. SSC's tentative list of 24 September 2026 shows 10,731 vacancies in total, and only 98 are for Inspector (Preventive Officer). Many applicants do not appear, but this is still one of the most competitive central government exams.

Pay follows a fixed government scale, so it starts modest and rises with promotions and years of service, and allowances differ by the city you are posted in.

Myth and fact

Myth: You must study law or commerce to become a Customs officer.
Fact: Any graduate can apply for this post. Customs law and procedure are taught in training at NACIN after you are selected.

For girls and students with disabilities

Women can apply, and the physical standards for women are different from men's: height 152 cm, weight 48 kg and a shorter walk (reported). Women, SC, ST and PwBD candidates pay no SSC fee. Height can be relaxed for ST candidates and for Gorkhas, Garhwalis and Assamese, and age limits are relaxed for OBC, SC/ST and PwD candidates. For some orthopaedically disabled candidates the walking test is reportedly not insisted on, but height, chest and weight standards still apply, so check the notice of the year you apply (reported).

  • Class 10–12Join a free MY Bharat volunteer activity (age 15+) in your area. It builds discipline and teamwork, which this job needs.Open link ↗

  • The physical standards and tests are set by the Customs department (CBIC), not by SSC. Standards in the SSC notice can change between years, so read the notice of the year you apply (the figures above are reported).
  • You will be transferred across cities and customs formations. Serving near home is not guaranteed.
  • SSC CGL also fills other posts such as Inspector (Central Excise) and Inspector (Examiner). You choose your post preferences after Tier-II.
