Chemical Engineer
Designs and runs plants that turn raw materials into fuels, medicines, fertilisers and plastics.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Solving practical problems that affect real plants and products
- Seeing a process you designed or improved run at a large scale
- Working across chemistry, maths and machines in one job
- Shift work, including nights, in plants that run round the clock
- Postings to remote sites, refineries or plants in other states
- Years of study and heavy maths before the work feels easy
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 with Physics and Maths compulsory, plus Chemistry, which most chemical engineering colleges treat as a must. Most colleges also ask for a minimum aggregate, usually somewhere between 45% and 60%, and this varies by college and category.
- First degree
- B.Tech or B.E. in Chemical Engineering, 4 years (8 semesters), full time.
- Entrance exams
- JEE Main (NTA) for NITs and many other colleges, JEE Advanced for IITs, state engineering CETs and some private university tests. GATE (paper CH) for some PSU jobs and for M.Tech.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Designing and running plants that make fuels, medicines, fertilisers, plastics and food products. Checking process safety, product quality and cost. Working with operators, chemists and mechanical or electrical engineers. Visiting plants and troubleshooting when a process goes wrong.
A day in the work
A typical day starts with a shift handover, where you check temperature, pressure and flow readings from the last shift. You then review a process problem, such as a drop in yield, with operators and a maintenance team. Much of the afternoon goes on calculations, reports and safety checks. You may end the day by planning a small change to make the plant run more cleanly or cheaply.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 10–12Choose Science with Physics, Chemistry and Maths in Class 11 and 12. Keep your Class 12 marks high, because many colleges set a minimum aggregate. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 2 · Class 12Sit JEE Main Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech), conducted by NTA. It is the main national test for NITs and many other colleges. Students who clear the JEE Main cut-off can also take JEE Advanced for the IITs. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · After Class 12Join counselling and seat allotment. Depending on the college, this runs through JoSAA, a state counselling body or the college itself. Your rank, category and choice of college decide the seat. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · 4 years (8 semesters)Study B.Tech in Chemical Engineering. The core subjects are thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, reaction engineering and process control. Lab work and plant design projects run through the course. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · Final year or afterOptional but useful: appear for GATE in the CH paper. Many PSUs use GATE scores to hire entry-level engineers, and GATE is also the route to M.Tech and PhD programmes. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · After B.TechStart work as a graduate engineer or trainee in refineries, petrochemical, pharma, fertiliser, food or environment plants. Some PSUs have run GATE-based trainee recruitment for chemical posts. (reported — check with the official body)
Ways in
- IIT routeJEE Main to qualify, then JEE Advanced to get an IIT seat. Competition is the sharpest of all routes.
- NIT and centrally funded collegesJEE Main rank, then counselling for NITs and other centrally funded colleges.
- Lateral entry after a diplomaSome colleges take diploma holders in a relevant engineering branch straight into the second year, through a lateral entry test.

What people earn
Starting pay depends a lot on the employer, the industry and the city, and it grows with experience and specialisation.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Under the AICTE rule as reproduced by one university, the aggregate marks needed are lower for SC and ST candidates (40% instead of 45%). Tuition waivers at IITs are also reported for SC, ST and PwD students (reported).
Try it now
- Class 7–9Do one safe home experiment this month, such as mixing vinegar and baking soda, and write what changed and why. Show it to your science teacher.
- Class 10–12Join your school science club or enter a science exhibition with a small project on water purification or a cleaner fuel. Keep a simple log of your results.
- College or afterTake a free NPTEL course in chemical engineering or process engineering and finish the first two weeks this month.Open link ↗
Good to know
- The JEE Main eligibility rule depends on the year you passed Class 12. For the 2026 cycle, students who passed Class 12 in 2024 or 2025, or were appearing in 2026, could sit the exam.
- Chemistry in Class 12 is not optional for this course at most colleges. Check the eligibility page of each college you are interested in.
- GATE scores are used by many PSUs for entry-level engineer jobs. Each PSU still sets its own rules, so check every notification.
- Maths is used all through this course, from fluid flow to reaction rates. If you are weak in Maths, start working on it in Class 11.
