Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Understanding how a huge plant really works, pipe by pipe
  • Solving practical problems with chemistry, maths and data
  • Working in a large, stable organisation with clear career steps
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Plant duty can mean shifts, nights and working in heat, noise and strict safety rules
  • Postings can be in refinery towns far from big cities, and transfers happen
  • Very few Chemical posts, 65% marks needed, and a 3-year bond after joining
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM) to get into a B.Tech. Chemistry and Maths matter most, because refinery work is chemistry, heat and fluid flow turned into numbers.
First degree
B.Tech/B.E. in Chemical Engineering, 4 years, full-time, from an AICTE/UGC-recognised college. IOCL's 2025 notice also accepts Chemical Technology (with refinery and petrochemical specialisation), Chemical and Biochemical, and Petrochemical Engineering. You need at least 65% marks (55% for SC/ST/PwBD).
Entrance exams
For college: JEE Main or a state entrance exam. For the job: IOCL's own Computer Based Test (CBT), then Group Discussion/Group Task and a Personal Interview. IOCL's 2025 and 2026 notices were CBT-based. Earlier years used GATE scores (reported). Each year's notice decides this, so read the latest one.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.
Subjects that keep this door openClass 11–12: Physics + Chemistry + Mathematics.PCM, with Chemistry doing the heavy lifting.Way back: You can add the missing subject later as an extra subject (for example through NIOS) and still apply, but check the exam's and college's rules. What the work is like

Watching how a refinery unit is running (crude distillation, cracking, treating and so on) and fixing problems. Tuning temperature, pressure and flow to get more petrol and diesel from each barrel, and saving energy. Working with the control room, the lab, maintenance and safety teams. Planning shutdowns and checking safety.

A day in the work
You reach the plant in the morning (or start a shift) and check the overnight log and the control-room screens for your unit. A lab report shows the diesel is slightly off-spec, so you work with the shift team to adjust temperature and flow, then check that it settles. Later you join a meeting with maintenance and safety about an upcoming shutdown, and you walk the unit to see the equipment yourself. In the evening you update data sheets and plan how to save a little more fuel.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 9–10Get comfortable with Maths and Science, especially Chemistry. Class 10 marks are not part of IOCL's engineer selection. A strong base now makes PCM and JEE-level Maths much easier later.
  2. Step 2 · Class 11–12Take PCM. Sit JEE Main (and state entrance tests) for a Chemical Engineering seat. IITs, NITs and good government colleges are the best value, but any AICTE/UGC-recognised college works for the IOCL rules.
  3. Step 3 · 4 years of B.TechStudy Chemical Engineering full-time. Keep your marks steady from Year 1, because IOCL asks for 65% (55% for SC/ST/PwBD) in the degree, and part-time or distance degrees are not accepted. Try for a summer internship at a refinery or chemical plant.
  4. Step 4 · Final year or just afterApply when IOCL advertises for Graduate Engineers (Grade A) on iocl.com. In 2026 the window was 14 Aug–3 Sep, and the upper age limit was 26 years for General/EWS as on 1 July 2026. Dates change every year. Only about 16 of the 470 executive posts were for Chemical in 2026 (reported), so competition is tough. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · Computer Based TestOne online test with about 100 multiple-choice questions in 150 minutes. Half is aptitude (maths, reasoning, English) and half is Chemical Engineering. There is negative marking. General/EWS/OBC-NCL candidates need 40% in each section and 45% overall, and even then only the top scorers are shortlisted. The 2026 test was held on 24 September (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · Group Discussion, Group Task and InterviewShortlisted candidates take part in a group discussion and group task, then a personal interview. Weights are reported as CBT 85%, GD/GT 5% and interview 10%, with 40% needed in each of the last two. (reported — check with the official body)
  7. Step 7 · Documents, medical, joiningOriginal documents are checked and a pre-employment medical is done (reported). You then join as an Engineer/Officer and must serve 3 years under a bond. I could not confirm the length of induction training and probation from the notice I read, so check IOCL's notice and service rules. (reported — check with the official body)

Ways in

  • IOCL's own CBT after B.Tech (current main route)Full-time Chemical (or related) B.Tech with 65%, then CBT, GD/GT and interview as above. This was the route in IOCL's 2025 and 2026 notices.
  • GATE score route (earlier years, and other oil PSUs)Some earlier IOCL drives shortlisted through GATE marks (reported). Other oil and gas PSUs may use their own rules. Take GATE seriously as a backup, and read each employer's notice.
  • Diploma then apprenticeshipA 3-year Chemical/Petrochemical diploma after Class 10 can lead to Technician Apprentice posts at IOCL refineries (reported, 2026 notices at Panipat and Haldia). These are training posts, not permanent jobs. IOCL's 2026 Diploma Engineer posts were in Electrical, Mechanical and Safety only (reported).

What people earn

Official pay

Grade A (Engineer/Officer), IDA pay scale ₹50,000–₹1,60,000, initial basic pay ₹50,000 per month, plus allowances and Performance Related Pay. IOCL's 2025 notice put the gross package at about ₹17.7 lakh a year, and the figure depends on posting and company performance. The 2026 scale is the same (reported), with a package of about ₹18.4 lakh (reported).

Pay starts at a fixed entry scale and rises with promotions and years of service, and the take-home changes with the place of posting, allowances and the company's yearly performance.

Myth and fact

Myth: You must have a GATE score to become an IOCL engineer.
Fact: IOCL's 2025 and 2026 notices selected Graduate Engineers through its own CBT, GD/GT and interview. GATE was used in some earlier years (reported). The rule can change, so read each year's notice.

For girls and students with disabilities

SC/ST/PwBD candidates need 55% marks in the degree instead of 65%. In 2026 they were also exempt from the application fee (reported) and got age relaxation, up to 36 years for PwBD General/EWS (reported). Reservations for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS apply to vacancies. I found no special rules for women. If you have a disability, check whether the Chemical posts in that year's notice are open to your category.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Try safe 'separating mixtures' experiments at home with an adult: evaporate salt water, filter muddy water, and run ink on filter paper. Write down which property let you separate each mixture. Refineries do the same thing with crude oil, using boiling points.
  • Class 10–12Look up the Chemistry Olympiad stages run by HBCSE and try one past-style question set. It builds the habit of solving chemistry problems from first principles.Open link ↗
  • College or afterPick one free NPTEL Chemical Engineering course (fluid mechanics, heat transfer or mass transfer) and finish the first two weeks. These topics are what a refinery job and the IOCL domain paper are built on.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • A refinery 'process engineer' is mostly a Chemical Engineering job. Mechanical and Instrumentation engineers also join IOCL, but they usually work on equipment and control systems rather than on the process itself.
  • IOCL does not advertise on a fixed date. The 2025 drive ran 5–21 September and the 2026 drive 14 Aug–3 Sep. Watch iocl.com, and note that IOCL says it notifies recruitment in newspapers and on its own website.
  • Selected engineers sign a 3-year service bond. In IOCL's 2025 notice it was ₹3 lakh for General and ₹50,000 for EWS/OBC-NCL/SC/ST/PwBD. The 2026 amounts are reported to be the same.
  • Postings can be anywhere in India, including refineries in smaller towns. Ask your family whether that suits you.
