Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Seeing a design become a real product that people use
  • Hands-on work with machines, moulds and test equipment
  • Solving problems when a part cracks, warps or does not fill properly
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Factory work with heat, noise and shift timings
  • Several years of study if you want a B.Tech and higher roles
  • Visits to plant sites or suppliers, and jobs that may be in small industrial towns
Class 11–12 subjects
Diploma (DPT or DPMT): Class 10 with Maths, Science and English, as listed in CIPET's 2026-27 Chennai brochure. The same brochure also lists a 2-year diploma for students who have passed 10+2 with Physics and Chemistry, plus Maths, Biology or a technical vocational subject. B.Tech in Plastics Engineering: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths. Many colleges ask for 50–55% overall (reported; it varies by college).
First degree
B.Tech in Plastics Engineering, 4 years. CIPET Bhubaneswar runs one, and it is NBA-accredited. The other route is a 3-year diploma after Class 10, with optional post-diploma or PG diploma courses later.
Entrance exams
CIPET's own test (CIPET JEE, also called the CIPET Admission Test or CAT) for CIPET diploma and PG courses. For B.Tech, CIPET Bhubaneswar uses CIPET JEE or OJEE, and other colleges use JEE Main or state exams (reported).
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Designing products and moulds, setting up machines for injection moulding and extrusion, testing material quality, and working with production and quality teams. Much of the work happens in factories.

A day in the work
The day usually starts on the shop floor, checking a batch of moulded parts for size and surface finish. You may adjust temperature or pressure settings with the machine operator when a part comes out warped or short. Part of the afternoon goes to a computer, where you revise a mould drawing or write a test report. You end by planning the next day's production run with your supervisor.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 7–10Build strong Maths and Science. The work is hands-on, so basic drawing, workshop skills and comfort with computers help.
  2. Step 2 · Class 10Apply for CIPET's own admission test for the 3-year diploma (DPT or DPMT). The 2026 cycle closed on 28 May 2026, with the test on 7 June 2026. Check cipet.gov.in for the next cycle. (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · Class 10 or Class 12Study the 3-year diploma at a CIPET centre, or take the B.Tech route after Class 12 with PCM. Entry to B.Tech at other colleges is by JEE Main or state tests. (reported — check with the official body)
  4. Step 4 · After diploma or degreeOptional post-diploma or PG diploma in plastics mould design, or in plastics processing and testing. CIPET's brochure lists a science degree as one entry route for the PG diploma.
  5. Step 5 · First jobStart as a moulding, process or quality technician, or a junior engineer, and learn on the shop floor. A later M.Tech is possible, with GATE as one entry route (reported). (reported — check with the official body)

Ways in

  • Diploma after Class 10A 3-year DPT or DPMT at a CIPET centre, entered through CIPET's test. This is the quicker way to start work.
  • B.Tech after Class 12A 4-year B.Tech in Plastics Engineering with Physics, Chemistry and Maths. Entry is through CIPET JEE or OJEE at CIPET Bhubaneswar, or through JEE Main or state tests at other colleges (reported).
  • Diploma, then B.Tech in second yearSome institutes take diploma holders into the second year of B.Tech (reported). Check each college's rules first.

What people earn

Pay depends on whether you start as a diploma technician or a B.Tech engineer, and on the company, the city and the type of plant. Experience and skill in mould design or testing usually raise earnings over time.

Myth and fact

Myth: Plastics engineering is only about making buckets, bottles and toys.
Fact: Plastics and polymers are used in cars, medical devices, packaging, electrical parts and aircraft parts. Engineers also design moulds and test how materials behave under heat and load.

For girls and students with disabilities

Reservation rules for SC, ST, OBC and persons with disabilities apply to CIPET and B.Tech seats (reported). CIPET's application fee is lower for SC/ST and North-Eastern candidates (reported).

Good to know

  • CIPET's own test is not the same as JEE Main. Read the brochure of the year you are applying in, since eligibility and fees change.
  • Plastics, rubber and composites are different areas within the same field. Ask the college which specialisation its B.Tech covers.
  • Most jobs are in factories. Shifts, noise, heat and safety gear are normal parts of the work.
