Digital Forensics Expert
Recovers and analyses data from phones and computers so it can be used as evidence in cybercrime and other cases.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Solving puzzles with computers and finding what others missed
- Careful, detailed work where being right matters
- Helping real cases, including cybercrime, fraud and online harassment
- Government lab vacancies are few and appear unpredictably, so you may wait for a notice
- Some cases involve disturbing material, such as violent or abusive content
- Slow, repetitive work, strict documentation, and court appearances
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 Science is the safest base. PCM (with Computer Science if your school offers it) keeps every route open, including B.Tech and BCA. NFSU's 5-year B.Sc–M.Sc Forensic Science asks for Class 12 Science with Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Maths, and at least 55% (50% for SC/ST/PwD). NFSU's B.Tech–M.Tech CSE needs Physics and Maths.
- First degree
- Most people do a 3–4 year bachelor's in computer science, IT, BCA or Forensic Science with a digital forensics focus. Then they do a 2-year M.Sc in Digital Forensics, Cyber Security or similar. Some government lab posts accept a B.E./B.Tech directly.
- Entrance exams
- NFSU takes students by national tests: CUET-UG 2026 for the B.Sc–M.Sc Forensic Science, and CUET-PG 2026 (code SCQP09) for the M.Sc Digital Forensics and Information Security. Government jobs have their own recruitment exams, for example the DSSSB computer-based test for Delhi's Forensic Science Laboratory.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Copying and examining phones, laptops, pen drives and cloud accounts without changing them. Recovering deleted files, chats and photos. Tracing how a device was used. Writing a clear report. Explaining the findings to police, lawyers and courts.
A day in the work
You start by logging a seized phone or laptop and noting its condition, because the chain of custody matters in court. You make an exact copy and work only on the copy, so the original stays untouched. Then you spend hours searching for deleted chats, hidden files and signs of who did what and when. In the afternoon you write the findings into a plain report. Some days you also speak to the investigating officer or prepare to explain your work to a judge.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Science. PCM with Computer Science is the most flexible. Start learning to code and how computers, files and networks work.
- Step 2 · After Class 12Choose a bachelor's: BCA, B.Sc Computer Science or IT, B.Tech in CSE/IT/ECE, or a B.Sc Forensic Science with a digital or cyber forensics focus. NFSU admits to its forensic science programmes through CUET-UG; check each college's own rules.
- Step 3 · 3–4 yearsBuild the base: programming, operating systems, networks, databases and cyber security. If you do a B.Sc Forensic Science, NFSU wants at least 4 subjects related to digital forensics, computer science or IT in that degree before its M.Sc Digital Forensics.
- Step 4 · 2 yearsM.Sc Digital Forensics (and Information Security) or Cyber Security. NFSU's M.Sc is admitted through CUET-PG 2026 (SCQP09), with at least 55% in your bachelor's (50% for SC/ST/PwD). It is offered at several campuses.
- Step 5 · Applying for lab jobsWatch for notices from state and central forensic labs. In 2026, Delhi's FSL advertised Junior Scientific Assistant (Cyber Forensic) posts through DSSSB, with a computer-based test and an age limit of 18–27 (reported). Telangana's FSL also advertised Scientific Assistant (Computers) and Scientific Officer (Computers) posts. Private cyber security and consulting firms hire for similar work. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · First year on the jobExpect a probation period with induction training, then supervised casework. DSSSB's 2026 notice reportedly includes a two-week induction. Later you may be asked to explain your findings in court. (reported — check with the official body)
- OptionalA Ph.D. or senior scientific posts. NFSU's 2024 recruitment notice listed digital forensics posts from Junior Scientific Officer upwards, asking for a master's degree in a relevant field.
Ways in
- Computer science routeBCA, B.Sc CS/IT or B.Tech CSE/IT/ECE, then an M.Sc or M.Tech in Digital Forensics or Cyber Security. This suits you if you like coding and networks. Delhi's 2026 cyber forensic notice accepted a master's in computer fields or a B.E./B.Tech in CS, IT, ECE or EEE.
- Forensic science routeB.Sc Forensic Science (or NFSU's 5-year B.Sc–M.Sc), then an M.Sc in Digital Forensics. This suits you if you are interested in the whole forensic world. Make sure you take enough computer subjects, because NFSU wants at least 4 digital forensics or computer science subjects in the bachelor's.
Your real chances
In 2026, Delhi's FSL advertised 81 Junior Scientific Assistant (Cyber Forensic) posts through DSSSB (Advt 03/2026). We could not find an official applicant count. Vacancies in other state labs are also small. For example, Telangana's FSL notice listed 2 Scientific Officer and 7 Scientific Assistant posts in Computers.

What people earn
Delhi FSL Junior Scientific Assistant (Cyber Forensic), 2026: Pay Level 5, ₹29,200–92,300 (7th CPC) plus allowances (reported; the figure comes from secondary pages summarising the DSSSB notice). For comparison, NFSU's 2024 notice listed Junior Scientific Officer (Digital Forensics) at Pay Level 7, ₹44,900–1,42,400, and Senior Scientific Officer at Level 10.
Entry pay in government labs follows fixed pay levels and rises with promotions, while private cyber security and consulting firms in big cities usually pay more but vary a lot by employer and your skills.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
NFSU asks for 50% instead of 55% in the qualifying exam for SC/ST/PwD candidates. In Delhi's 2026 notice, 3 of the 81 Cyber Forensic posts appear to be marked for PwBD candidates, and the application fee was reportedly waived for women, SC, ST and PwBD candidates; check the notice for details.

Good to know
- Government labs hire in small numbers and the rules differ by state. Always read the latest notice on the lab's or recruiting board's website.
- Delhi's 2026 Junior Scientific Assistant (Cyber Forensic) notice was modified by a corrigendum on 22 July 2026. Read the corrigendum along with the main notice before you rely on any detail.
- Some websites say NFSU still uses its own entrance test (NFAT). NFSU's 2026 admission notice names CUET for these programmes, so go by the official notice.
- Cyber security and digital forensics overlap. Learning one makes the other easier, which helps if lab jobs are scarce.
