Forensic Scientist
Analyses evidence like DNA, fingerprints, documents and chemicals to help solve crimes.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Careful lab work and solving puzzles from small clues
- Knowing your report can help a court decide a case
- Using chemistry, biology, physics or computers in real cases
- Government posts are limited, and many openings are one-year contracts
- Cases can be disturbing, and you may need to visit crime scenes or give evidence in court
- Every report must be exact, with a long study path (often a Master's) before you qualify for most posts
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 Science (PCB or PCM). For NFSU's B.Sc–M.Sc, the 2026 admission FAQ asks for at least 55% (50% for SC/ST/PwD). Other colleges set their own cut-offs.
- First degree
- B.Sc–M.Sc Forensic Science (5 years, integrated), or a 3-year B.Sc in Chemistry, Biology, Physics or Forensic Science followed by a 2-year M.Sc in Forensic Science or a related subject. Most scientific posts in forensic labs ask for a Master's degree.
- Entrance exams
- For NFSU (National Forensic Sciences University), the 2026 cycle used CUET-UG for the 5-year course and CUET-PG for the M.Sc, both run by NTA. For jobs, each state or central forensic lab recruits separately through its own notice, test or interview.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Test crime-scene evidence in a lab: DNA and blood, fingerprints, documents, drugs and poisons, firearms, and phones or computers. Write careful reports. Sometimes visit crime scenes. Explain your findings in court if asked.
A day in the work
You reach the lab, check the evidence packets that police sent overnight and log each one so nothing gets mixed up. Then you spend hours on careful bench work, like running a DNA sample, testing a suspected drug or comparing handwriting under a microscope. After lunch you write your findings in a formal report that must be exact, because a court may depend on it. A few days a month you may be called to a crime scene or to court to explain your results. Unlike on TV, you do not chase or arrest anyone.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Science. Chemistry, Biology and Physics all matter in different lab divisions. NFSU's integrated course accepts both PCB and PCM students. Keep your marks above 55%, because that is the cut-off NFSU asked for in 2026 (50% for SC/ST/PwD).
- Step 2 · Class 12For NFSU's B.Sc–M.Sc, write CUET-UG. In 2026 the subjects were Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Maths, and the exam ran from 11 to 31 May. NFSU's notice says its own entrance test was not used for the 2026 admissions. Check the current year's NFSU brochure before you plan. Other universities have their own entry rules.
- Step 3 · 3 to 5 yearsStudy B.Sc (3 years) or the integrated B.Sc–M.Sc (5 years). Labs often check which subjects you studied at graduation. For example, Telangana's 2025 notice wanted forensic Master's candidates to have studied Chemistry or Toxicology (for chemical posts) or Physics (for physical posts) at B.Sc level.
- Step 4 · 2 years (if not integrated)Do an M.Sc in Forensic Science or the subject of the division you want, such as Chemistry, Zoology, Biotechnology or Physics. At NFSU, M.Sc entry in 2026 was through CUET-PG, with a Bachelor's degree at 55% (50% for SC/ST/PwD).
- Step 5 · RecruitmentWatch the websites of the state FSL, the Home Department and the Central Forensic Science Laboratories. Each posts its own notice. Telangana's November 2025 notice listed 60 posts and gave marks for academics and lab experience. Delhi FSL hired contract Junior Scientific Assistants by interview. UP uses a written exam through UPSSSC (reported). Some posts ask for 1 to 3 years of lab or casework experience. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · Documents, fitness check, joiningShortlisted candidates go through document checks. Some field-duty posts also set physical fitness and eyesight standards (reported, e.g. Goa DFS 2026). Many entry posts are one-year contracts, as in Delhi FSL's 2025 notice. Regular posts come with a probation period set by that state's service rules, so read each notice. Ways in
- Integrated routeAfter Class 12 (PCB or PCM), take the 5-year B.Sc–M.Sc Forensic Science at NFSU or a similar university. Then apply to FSLs.
- Pure-science routeDo a B.Sc in Chemistry, Zoology, Physics or Biotechnology, then an M.Sc in Forensic Science or the same subject. Labs often like a strong subject base at graduation level.
- Digital forensics routeDo BCA, B.Sc Computer Science or B.Tech (CS/IT/ECE), then an M.Sc or M.Tech in cyber or digital forensics. Telangana's 2025 notice had Scientific Officer and Scientific Assistant posts for computer graduates.
Your real chances
Openings are small and scattered, and each lab posts its own. Telangana's State FSL advertised 60 posts across scientific and lab staff in November 2025. I could not find an official applicant count, so competition per post is unknown.

What people earn
Pay depends on the lab and the state, and entry posts are often fixed contract pay. Example from an official notice: Telangana State FSL (Nov 2025) listed Scientific Officer at ₹45,960–1,24,150 and Scientific Assistant at ₹42,300–1,15,270 as pay scales. Delhi FSL's 2025 contract notice offered Junior Scientific Assistants ₹42,632 a month, fixed, with no other allowances. Central and UP posts use 7th CPC pay levels, for example Level 6 for UP Scientific Assistant (reported, 2026). Check each notice.

Pay starts modest, especially on one-year contracts, and grows with a regular post, promotion, experience and a PhD. It also differs a lot between central labs, state labs and private labs.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
NFSU gives a 5% lower marks cut-off for SC/ST and PwD candidates in its 2026 eligibility rules. Telangana's 2025 FSL notice reserved posts for SC, ST, EWS and persons with orthopaedic disability. Some field-duty posts set fitness and eyesight standards (reported), so students with disabilities should read each notice.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Try a safe home fingerprint activity. Dust a little cocoa powder on a clean glass, lift the print with clear tape and stick it on white paper. Compare loops, whorls and arches in your family's prints.
- Class 10–12Build a strong base in Chemistry and Biology. Create a free SWAYAM account and start one free basic course in either subject, finishing one unit this month.Open link ↗
- College or afterRead one real forensic lab recruitment notice in full, such as Telangana's. Make a list of which subjects each post asks for at B.Sc and M.Sc level, and match it to your own plan.Open link ↗
Good to know
- There is no single national exam for this job. India has 7 Central Forensic Science Laboratories, 32 State FSLs and 97 Regional FSLs (a PIB reply based on available information). Each hires on its own.
- A PIB reply says the new criminal laws make forensic investigation compulsory for offences punishable with 7 years or more. More lab work is expected, but how many posts open depends on each state.
- Age limits and experience rules differ by lab. Delhi FSL's 2025 contract notice for Junior Scientific Assistants, for example, asked for age below 27 (with relaxation for reserved categories).
- If you like computers more than chemistry, look at digital forensics too.
