What the work is like
Running the day-to-day working of a store: managing the team, checking stock and losses, meeting sales targets, keeping the store safe and clean, handling customer complaints, and reporting to head office.
A day in the work
The day usually starts before the shop opens, with a check of cash, stock and the staff roster. You then move between the floor, the billing counter and the stock room, solving small problems like a billing error or a short-staffed counter. Late afternoon and weekends are busy, so you spend time planning the next day's targets and reports before closing up and checking the store's security.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 11–12Any stream works for the degree, so you do not need to switch to commerce just for this. Build English speaking and writing skills, and get comfortable with numbers, since stock and sales are counted in figures.
- Step 2 · Class 12Finish Class 12 with the marks your target college asks for. Apply to a BBA or B.Voc in Retail Management. Check each college's own admission route: merit, CUET UG, or a test and interview.
- Step 3 · Years 1–3Complete the 3-year degree. Subjects usually cover retail operations, merchandising, supply chain, customer service and sales. Choose a college that offers internships with retail chains. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · During the degreeWork in a store as often as you can, even part-time or during holidays. The national skill standard for this job expects about 2 years of relevant store experience alongside a 3-year degree.
- Step 5 · After 2–3 yearsMove into an assistant store manager or shift in-charge role, then a store manager post. Titles, timelines and responsibilities differ from one retailer to another.
- OptionalAn MBA or PGDM with a retail specialisation, or a PG diploma, once you have some work experience. Entrance tests, fees and eligibility vary by institute. (reported — check with the official body)

What people earn
Pay varies a great deal: a fresh graduate in a small town earns far less than an experienced manager running a large store in a metro city, and pay also depends on the employer and on sales performance.

Good to know
- The national skill standard for this role says the job holder manages overall store operations and profitability, and also supervises staff. It is a management role, not only a shop-floor job.
- The skill standard's NSQF level differs across documents. An older NSDC page shows level 7, while the 2024 Retailers Association's Skill Council of India pack shows 5.5. Check the latest version before you rely on the level.
- Retail management can also lead to roles such as e-commerce operations, supply chain and franchise management. Your first job will shape which of these you move towards.
