Is this for me?
- Turning an idea into something people can actually play
- Working in a team that mixes code, art, sound and story
- Seeing strangers enjoy a game you helped make
- Crunch: long hours in the weeks before a launch
- Job security can be weak, since studios depend on funding and can shrink or close
- Constant change, as engines and tools update and feedback on your work can be repeated and detailed
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Most B.Sc game design courses ask for Class 12 with about 50–60% aggregate, and many accept any stream. Physics and Maths help if you plan to write code. Some colleges list Physics, Maths and English for certain entrance routes. Being able to draw, plan and tell a story is useful in any stream.
- First degree
- A 3-year B.Sc in Game Design or Gaming Design, or a B.Sc/B.Tech in Computer Science with game development electives. Courses cover game engines, 3D art, level design and programming.
- Entrance exams
- No single national exam. Some private colleges use their own test. Others accept LPUNEST, JEE Main or CUET, or the AAFT Global Entrance Test.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Designing game rules, levels and characters; writing code for movement, AI and menus; making 2D or 3D art and sound; testing games on devices; working with a team of artists, writers and programmers.
A day in the work
The day often starts with a short team meeting where people share what they finished and what is blocked. A programmer might spend the morning fixing a bug, such as a character getting stuck in a wall, and then test the fix on a phone or PC. An artist or designer may adjust a level layout or the difficulty of a boss fight. Late afternoons often go to playtesting with colleagues, and near a release date the hours can run long.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 9–12Keep Maths and Science if you can. Try basic coding, such as Python or C#, and sketch simple game ideas in a notebook.
- Step 2 · Class 12Apply to a 3-year B.Sc in Game Design or Computer Science with game development. Private colleges usually ask for about 50–60% in Class 12, and some use their own entrance test. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · Years 1–3 of the degreeLearn a game engine such as Unity or Unreal, plus 3D tools like Blender or Maya. Build small playable games and take part in game jams. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · Final yearDo an industry internship and build a portfolio of playable games. Studios and course providers look closely at what you have made. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · First jobCommon first roles include game tester, level designer, junior gameplay programmer, or 2D or 3D artist. Many people start in testing or art and move up over time. (reported — check with the official body)
Ways in
- Degree routea 3-year B.Sc in Game Design or Gaming Design, which mixes art, design and programming.
- Computer Science routea B.Sc or B.Tech in Computer Science with game development electives, which suits students who enjoy coding more.
- Self-taught routelearn Unity or Unreal and publish small games. It is possible, but a degree or a strong portfolio helps you get noticed.

What people earn
Pay varies a lot. Entry jobs at small studios or testing roles pay much less than experienced developers at large studios, and pay also differs by city and employer, with mobile, PC and console studios often paying differently.

Good to know
- India's government has announced AVGC Content Creator Labs for 15,000 secondary schools and 500 colleges, with ₹250 crore allocated. The labs are still being planned, so do not expect them everywhere yet.
- Government estimates say India may need about 2 million AVGC professionals by 2030. This is a projection, not a promise of jobs.
- Industry bodies say funding and publishing deals are the biggest barriers for Indian studios. Many jobs depend on how well a studio is funded.
- Many game design courses are private. Check each college's recognition, placement claims and fee page before you join.
