Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Seeing an idea come alive on a screen or headset
  • Solving small puzzles in code and 3D scenes
  • Working with artists, designers and clients on something visual
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Keeping up with fast-changing hardware and software tools
  • Long hours of debugging when a feature will not work
  • Demand for XR jobs can be uneven, and many roles are project-based
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 with Maths is the usual base for a B.Tech or BCA. Physics and Computer Science are useful for B.Tech in computing. Design or animation students can also enter through their own courses and build XR skills on top.
First degree
B.Tech in computer science (4 years) or BCA (3 years). Many people then add Unity or Unreal Engine training and XR courses.
Entrance exams
There is no single national exam for AR/VR. Entry to B.Tech or BCA depends on the college, and many use JEE Main, state entrance tests or merit.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Building 3D scenes, interactive apps and headset experiences; scripting in game engines such as Unity or Unreal; testing on phones and headsets; working with designers, artists and clients on training or product demos.

A day in the work
You might start with a stand-up with your team and then spend the morning fixing a bug in a Unity scene, such as a hand-tracking glitch on a headset. After lunch you may test a training module on a phone or headset with a designer, noting where users get confused. The afternoon often goes to adding a new 3D object or menu, then saving work, updating the project file and planning the next day's task.

The path, step by step

  1. Class 9–10Get comfortable with maths and logic. Try a little coding or 3D design on free tools, so you know whether you enjoy building things on a screen.
  2. Class 11–12Take Maths and Computer Science if your school offers them. Pass Class 12 with a good base in maths, since most B.Tech and BCA courses ask for it.
  3. After Class 12 · 3–4 yearsDo a B.Tech in computer science or a BCA. Choose a college that has projects, labs or internships in graphics, gaming or XR, and ask about these before you join.
  4. During the degreeLearn a game engine such as Unity or Unreal. Unity projects are commonly written in C#. Add an XR course, such as the free NPTEL course on the foundations of virtual and augmented reality systems, or a short NSDC-linked course with a clear syllabus.
  5. Final year and first jobBuild a small portfolio of AR and VR apps you have made yourself. Apply for junior developer, Unity developer or XR developer roles, and expect to start with supervised work.

Ways in

  • Degree routeB.Tech or BCA first, then game-engine and XR skills added through courses and projects. This is the most common path.
  • Skill-course routeA 4–6 month AR/VR or Unity course after Class 12 or after a graduate degree. These courses vary a lot in quality, so check the syllabus, the trainer and whether the certificate is recognised before paying.
  • Design and creative routeAnimation, game art or design courses that move into 3D and XR work. Many XR teams need artists and designers as well as programmers.

What people earn

Earnings vary a lot. A fresh graduate usually starts at a modest level, while people with a strong portfolio, several years in a studio, or skills in enterprise XR can earn much more; city and employer also matter.

Myth and fact

Myth: AR/VR is only for games.
Fact: Games are a big use, but AR and VR are also used for training, education, healthcare, manufacturing and shopping. Many developers work on these non-game projects.

Good to know

  • The national skilling framework has a qualification file for AR/VR Developer. It lists AR and VR as separate tracks, covering concepts, building AR apps, 3D technology and building VR apps.
  • The government's Indian Institute of Creative Technologies in Mumbai runs AVGC-XR courses. The Ministry has said it works on skill gaps in VR, AR and 3D modelling.
  • Job listings for AR/VR roles in India are often small or project-based. Check that a job matches your skills before you accept it.
  • The government has said that AR, VR and XR devices now need a safety registration before sale in India (reported in the news). This affects hardware makers more than developers.
