Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Mixing science, history and hands-on craft in one job
  • Working slowly and carefully on something that will outlast you
  • Visiting old sites and learning from master craftspeople
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Few permanent jobs. Government posts come in bursts and project work can be uncertain
  • Long study (bachelor's plus Master's), with only about 15 seats a year at the main institute
  • Slow, detailed work, often outdoors or on scaffolding, with dust, heat and chemicals. Salaries start modest
Class 11–12 subjects
There is no fixed Class 12 rule. Science (PCM or PCB) keeps the most doors open. The main Master's, M.A. Conservation at the Indian Institute of Heritage (formerly National Museum Institute), needs a bachelor's degree with at least 50% in Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Biology, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Fine Arts, Architecture or Engineering. A bachelor's in History, Geography, Anthropology or Archaeology also qualifies, but only if you studied Science in Class 12.
First degree
A 3–4 year bachelor's in a relevant subject, then a Master's in Conservation (M.A. Conservation, about 2 years, reported). Architects can take a postgraduate course in architectural conservation instead.
Entrance exams
For M.A. Conservation at the Indian Institute of Heritage: the institute's own written test and interview. Other universities run their own tests. For ASI Conservation Assistant posts: a Staff Selection Commission (SSC) recruitment.

What the work is like

Documenting old buildings, paintings, manuscripts and objects. Studying what they are made of and why they are decaying. Cleaning, repairing and strengthening them with as little change as possible. Using lime, stone, wood and other traditional materials alongside lab science. Writing reports and working with architects, masons, archaeologists and museum staff.

A day in the work
You might start at a museum lab, examining a cracked old painting under a magnifier and noting its condition in a report. Then you clean a small patch with a gentle solvent test and photograph the result. In the afternoon you join a site visit to a crumbling haveli, checking damp patterns with an architect and a mason who knows lime plaster. Back at the desk you write notes and plan the next stage.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 8–10Build the habits this work needs. Sketch, photograph and observe old buildings and objects. Enjoy Chemistry and History. Visit protected monuments and museums near you.
  2. Step 2 · Class 11–12Take Science if you can, PCM or PCB. Science keeps every route open, including the History-based route to the Master's. If you are more of an artist, keep up drawing and painting, because Fine Arts graduates are also eligible for the Master's.
  3. Step 3 · 3–4 years after Class 12Complete a bachelor's with at least 50% in Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Biology, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Fine Arts, Architecture or Engineering. History, Geography, Anthropology or Archaeology also work if you had Science in Class 12.
  4. Step 4 · After graduationApply for M.A. Conservation at the Indian Institute of Heritage (formerly National Museum Institute, Deemed University, Ministry of Culture). The 2024-25 prospectus listed 15 seats. Selection is by a written test and interview. The institute says the test looks at general knowledge of art and heritage, basic science, manual dexterity, observation and writing. No fee is paid when you apply; the fee is paid only if you are admitted. Dates change every year, so check nmi.gov.in.
  5. Step 5 · The Master's courseThe institute's FAQ lists 13 papers, one language, 2 seminars and a dissertation for its M.A. courses. Check the current structure on the institute's website. Try to do internships with INTACH, a museum or a conservation laboratory, because hands-on practice matters a great deal in this field.
  6. Step 6 · First jobLook at museums, ASI (Archaeological Survey of India), INTACH, state archaeology departments and private conservation firms. Government posts are advertised only when vacancies are released, usually through SSC, UPSC or ASI notices. INTACH hires by CV. Its listed roles often ask for a Master's plus several years of experience, so expect to start with internships or project work.
  7. OptionalA PhD in Conservation at the same institute, or a specialisation in paper, paintings, stone or metal. A conservation architect usually adds a Master's in architectural conservation after B.Arch.

Ways in

  • Science or Fine Arts graduate → M.A. ConservationBachelor's in Chemistry, Physics, Geology, Biology, Fine Arts or similar, then M.A. Conservation. This leads to museums, labs and conservation of objects, paintings and paper. It is the route in the list above.
  • Architect → conservation architectB.Arch, then a postgraduate course in architectural conservation, and projects with INTACH's Architectural Heritage Division or private conservation firms. INTACH has advertised architect roles where a conservation background is a plus. You also need Council of Architecture registration to use the title 'architect'.
  • Civil engineering diploma → ASI Conservation AssistantClass 10, then a 3-year Diploma in Civil Engineering, then an SSC recruitment for Conservation Assistant at ASI (Group C, Level 4). Recruits must complete in-service conservation training during probation. A Master's is not needed for this post. Seniority later leads to Senior Conservation Assistant.

Your real chances

The Indian Institute of Heritage's 2024-25 prospectus lists only 15 seats for M.A. Conservation. For jobs, ASI's own seniority list (1 January 2025) shows 180 sanctioned Senior Conservation Assistant posts, of which only 42 were filled. I found no official applicant numbers, so competition for jobs cannot be measured here.

What people earn

Official pay

ASI Conservation Assistant (Group C): Level 4 of the pay matrix (7th CPC), plus allowances. The usual Level 4 range of about ₹25,500–81,100 is reported, not taken from the ASI page. Senior Conservation Assistant (Group B): Level 6, ₹35,400–1,12,400 plus allowances. Pay for other posts, such as museum or conservation lab posts, depends on the notice. INTACH jobs do not follow a government scale (reported).

Pay starts modest and rises with experience, specialisation and reputation. Government posts follow fixed pay scales, while NGOs, museums and private projects vary a lot by city and funding, and project work can be irregular.

Myth and fact

Myth: Heritage conservation just means repainting and repairing old buildings to look new.
Fact: Good conservation tries to change as little as possible. It rests on lab science, careful records and traditional materials and skills, and conservation professionals are expected to learn from master craftspeople.

For girls and students with disabilities

ASI posts are filled through central-government recruitment, which applies the usual reservations and age relaxations for SC, ST, OBC, EWS, ex-servicemen and persons with benchmark disabilities. Each notice lists post-specific medical and physical standards, and site work can involve climbing and long standing, so check those standards for the exact post. I did not find women-specific provisions for this career.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Visit one old fort, temple or museum near you. Sketch a damaged part and write down what it is made of and what might have damaged it (water, plants, pollution, people). Ask a guide or caretaker what repairs were done.
  • Class 10–12Do a small science project on why stone, brick or iron decays. Watch how salt, water and rust affect samples at home. Write up what you saw, keep drawing, and read about how lime mortar is used in old buildings.
  • College or afterWrite to INTACH about an internship. It offers internships to students in architecture and conservation-related fields. Also join a local INTACH chapter or museum as a volunteer.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • Jobs are few and openings come in bursts. ASI's own seniority list (1 January 2025) showed 180 sanctioned posts of Senior Conservation Assistant with only 42 filled. Many conservators work on projects and contracts.
  • Do not assume a Master's in Conservation leads straight to an ASI job. The ASI Conservation Assistant post asks for a civil engineering diploma, not a Master's. Read each notice carefully for which qualifications are accepted.
  • Age limits for ASI Conservation Assistant are set in each SSC notice. The 2023 recruitment rules say 18 to 27 for direct recruits (reported). Always check the latest notice.
  • The INTACH Charter says conservation professionals must learn from master craftspeople at sites. Time spent working with masons and artisans counts for as much as classroom learning.
