Archaeologist
Digs, studies and documents ancient sites and objects to understand the past.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Reading the story of a place from small clues like pottery, bricks or inscriptions
- Working outdoors in a team, then slowly writing it up
- Handling real historical objects and helping protect them
- Few vacancies, irregular notices and long waits for results
- Fieldwork in heat, dust and remote areas, with postings away from home
- Many years of study before a first job, and careful, repetitive record-keeping
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Any stream in Class 12 is fine. History, Geography, Political Science or Sanskrit help, but there is no compulsory subject. The real gate is your master's degree.
- First degree
- BA (3 years) in History, Ancient History or Archaeology. Then MA (2 years) in Archaeology or Ancient Indian History and Culture. Some institutes, such as Deccan College in Pune, run an MA in Ancient Indian History, Culture & Archaeology that takes graduates from many subjects (reported). ASI's own PG Diploma in Archaeology is an optional extra.
- Entrance exams
- For the main ASI entry post (Assistant Archaeologist): the SSC Selection Post exam, a computer-based test (reported). For ASI's PG Diploma: a written test plus interview at its Institute of Archaeology.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Surveying and exploring sites, excavating, recording and cataloguing finds, writing reports, preparing notes on monuments and objects, protecting antiquities, and guiding visitors at sites and exhibitions.
A day in the work
During an excavation season you reach the trench early, before the heat. You help mark the layers, record where every pot, bead or brick was found, and photograph and sketch it. In the afternoon you wash and label finds, update the register and write your field notes. Off-season, you work in a lab, museum or office on reports, catalogues and monument notes, and sometimes guide visitors at a site.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 9–12Choose any stream, but keep History in your school years if you can. Visit forts, temples, caves and museums near you. Archaeology is learned by looking at real places.
- Step 2 · 3 years after Class 12Do a BA in History, Ancient History or Archaeology at a university. Choose papers on ancient and medieval India, because later job rules ask for these papers by name.
- Step 3 · 2 yearsDo an MA in Archaeology, or in Indian History with Ancient or Medieval Indian History as a subject or paper. ASI's 2025 SSC notice also accepted Anthropology (with Stone-age Archaeology) and Geology (with Pleistocene Geology), per its earlier rules (reported). Check that the paper names on your marksheet match the notice.
- Optional · 1 yearApply to ASI's PG Diploma in Archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology, Greater Noida. Admission is by written test and interview. The course used to be 2 years; it is reported to be 1 year now, so read the latest prospectus. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · Written examApply to the SSC Selection Post exam when ASI's Assistant Archaeologist post is advertised. In Phase XIII/2025, applications ran from 2 to 23 June 2025. The age limit was 18–30 years, counted on 1 August 2025. The test is computer-based (reported).
- Step 5 · Document checkSSC checks that your master's degree, marksheets and category papers match the advertised requirements. Having a different paper title than the notice asks for is a common reason for rejection (reported). The final result for the degree must usually be out before the cut-off date. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · Training and probationJoin ASI at Pay Level 6. ASI's draft rules say you must complete six months of in-service training in archaeology during probation. After 5 years in the grade, you can be promoted to Assistant Superintending Archaeologist (Level 7). These come from the 2022 draft rules, so the final rules may differ.
Ways in
- ASI through SSCThe standard direct-entry route for a Group B post in the central government. Vacancies come irregularly, not every year.
- State archaeology departments and museumsEach state has its own department and its own recruitment. Qualifications and exams differ, so check your state's notices (reported).
- Contract and project workASI regularly advertises time-limited posts. A January 2026 circular sought 12 Young Archaeologists, aged under 38, at about ₹40,000 a month (reported). These are not permanent jobs, but they give field experience.
- University research and teachingA PhD after your master's leads to research and college teaching, which is a different path from ASI.
Your real chances
SSC's Phase XIII/2025 notice listed only 45 Assistant Archaeologist posts for all of India (reported). I could not find an official applicant count for this post. ASI's PG Diploma is also reported to admit only about 15 students a year. Plan on a small number of seats and keep a backup.

What people earn
Assistant Archaeologist (ASI, Group B non-gazetted): Pay Level 6, ₹35,400–₹1,12,400 basic scale (7th CPC) plus allowances. This is as shown in the SSC Phase XIII/2025 advertisement and ASI's draft rules (reported).
Government posts follow a fixed pay scale that rises with promotion. Contract and project roles pay less and can end, and pay in teaching, museums or private heritage work varies with the employer and city.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Reservation applies in ASI posts and in the PG Diploma, and age relaxation is given to SC/ST/OBC candidates (reported). In the 2025 SSC notice, one of the 45 Assistant Archaeologist posts was reserved for a visually impaired candidate (reported). The application fee was ₹100, waived for women, SC/ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen (reported).
Try it now
- Class 7–9Visit one old monument or museum near you this month. Draw one object or carving and write five lines on what it tells you about people who lived there.
- Class 10–12Choose History as an elective if your school offers it. Search for free history or archaeology courses on SWAYAM and try one short unit.Open link ↗
- College or afterAsk your university department how to join a field school, excavation camp or museum internship. Volunteer for one season to find out if you like fieldwork.
Good to know
- Government archaeology posts are few. Look at ASI's own jobs page: in October 2026 it listed mostly legal consultants, a senior architect post and a capacity-building ADG post, not many junior archaeologist posts.
- Digging at protected sites needs permission from the ASI. As a student, you join an excavation led by a university or ASI team. You do not start your own.
- Fieldwork often means heat, dust, remote places and months away from home. Lab and office work is just as much a part of the job.
- Keep a backup: museums, archives, heritage conservation and teaching all use the same degree.
