Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Researching objects and finding out the story behind them
  • Planning displays and explaining history to visitors and school children
  • Working close to art, archaeology and culture in a quiet, thoughtful setting
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Very few jobs, so competition is tough and you may wait years for a vacancy
  • Postings are mostly in big cities such as Delhi and Kolkata, and entry pay at private museums can be low
  • Much of the work is slow paperwork, listing and writing, not only exciting exhibitions
Class 11–12 subjects

What the work is like

Documenting and caring for collections, researching objects, planning exhibitions and galleries, writing labels and catalogues, working with conservators and designers, and running programmes for visitors and schools.

A day in the work
You might start by checking a new gallery label or a condition report with the conservator. Mid-morning you could be researching the history of a coin or painting that has just been donated. After lunch there may be a meeting with designers about a new exhibition, or a school group to guide through a gallery. The day often ends with documentation and emails, because every object must be recorded carefully.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12Any stream works. History, Political Science, Fine Arts, Sociology or languages help most. Start visiting museums and heritage sites, and read about objects and the stories behind them.
  2. Step 2 · 3 yearsDo a bachelor's degree in History, Archaeology, Fine Arts, Anthropology or another Arts, Science or Social Science subject. IIH asks for at least 50% marks (2024–25 notice). A background or diploma in History of Art or museum studies is listed as desirable.
  3. Step 3 · 2 yearsDo an MA in Museology. IIH (formerly National Museum Institute, now in Noida) takes students by written test and interview. It had 15 MA Museology seats in 2024–25, with reservation as per Government of India rules. The MA needs 13 papers, a language paper, two seminars and a dissertation.
  4. Step 4 · During and after the MABuild experience through museum internships, volunteering, documentation projects or contract roles. Government notices often ask for years of museum experience, especially for senior posts.
  5. Step 5 · ApplyingWatch the websites of the National Museum, Indian Museum Kolkata, Salar Jung, Allahabad Museum, ASI and your state's museum department. Vacancies are few and each one is advertised separately. Selection is by shortlisting, a written or skill test, and an interview, as set in each advertisement. (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · JoiningEntry-level curatorial posts such as Assistant Curator are reported at Pay Level 6. New central government staff are normally on probation, but the exact terms are in each appointment letter. (reported — check with the official body)
  7. Step 7 · Later careerIn central museums, posts rise through Deputy Curator (Pay Level 10) to Curator (Pay Level 11). Many senior posts are filled by deputation or promotion, and many curators later specialise in one area, such as paintings, coins, textiles or anthropology. (reported — check with the official body)

Ways in

  • Central government museums (National Museum, Indian Museum, etc.)Direct recruitment for entry-level posts, usually with a Master's in Museology or a related subject. Senior curator posts are often filled by deputation of serving officers, so the National Museum's 2026 notice for Curator (Display) was for one post only.
  • State museums and archaeology departmentsEach state has its own museums and its own rules. Posts may come through the State Public Service Commission or the department. Check your state's notices, as qualifications and pay differ.
  • Autonomous, trust and private museumsMuseums run by trusts, universities, companies and cultural foundations hire directly, often on contract, by CV and interview. Pay and job security vary a lot.

Your real chances

In 2026, the National Museum advertised just one Curator (Display) post. The Indian Museum, Kolkata advertised five posts in total in 2026, and none of them were Curator posts. IIH had only 15 MA Museology seats in 2024–25. Applicant numbers are not published, but the seat and post counts show how narrow the entry is.

What people earn

Official pay

Central museum curator posts follow the 7th CPC pay matrix. Curator (Display) at the National Museum is Pay Level 11, in the 2026 Ministry of Culture notice. The amount, about ₹67,700 basic rising to ₹2,08,700 (reported), comes from job-listing sites, not the official PDF. Deputy Curator is Pay Level 10 (₹56,100–1,77,500). Entry-level Assistant Curator is reported at Pay Level 6 (₹35,400–1,12,400). The Indian Museum's 2026 advertisement gives this same Level 6 pay for its Library and Information Officer post. Allowances are extra.

Earnings depend heavily on the employer: central government posts follow a fixed pay scale with steady increments, while state, trust and private museums can pay much less or on short contracts, and big-city museums usually pay more.

Myth and fact

Myth: A degree in Museology guarantees a government museum job.
Fact: Museology gives you the training, but posts are very few and are advertised only now and then. Many people start with contract, project or private-museum work and build experience first.

For girls and students with disabilities

IIH admissions follow Government of India reservation rules for SC, ST, OBC and persons with disabilities. The Indian Museum's 2026 advertisement says upper age limits can be relaxed for reserved categories as per government rules.

Good to know

  • Curator jobs are very few. The National Museum's 2026 notice (Ministry of Culture) was for one Curator (Display) post. It was filled by deputation, with direct recruitment only if that failed, and the age limit was 56.
  • Not every curator comes from History. That same notice asked for a Bachelor's in Architecture or Design plus 5 years' experience in setting up exhibitions, with a Museology diploma only desirable. Specialisations matter.
  • A 2023 Ministry of Culture directory lists about 1,176 museums in India. Many are small, so there are more jobs outside the big national museums than inside them. Pay and stability are different in those.
  • If you like science and materials more than history, look at conservation. IIH offers a separate MA in Conservation, which needs a science background.
