Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and Geology all count as degree subjects. Check the latest UPSC notice for the exact list.
First degree
A bachelor's degree with at least one of these subjects (reported): Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Zoology, Agriculture, Forestry, or Engineering. This usually means a 3-year B.Sc or a 4-year B.Tech, B.Sc (Agriculture/Forestry) or veterinary degree.

UPSC Indian Forest Service Examination. Stage 1 is the Civil Services (Preliminary) Exam, which is shared with the IAS exam. Stage 2 is the IFS Main exam (written), then an interview.

What the work is like

Protecting forests and wildlife, running national parks and tiger reserves, planting and managing forest land, working with villagers who live near forests, handling forest laws and court cases, and preparing plans and budgets. Later, some officers work on national conservation and climate policy.

A day in the work
You may start with a field visit at dawn to check a plantation or a patrol camp. By mid-morning you are in the divisional office, signing files, reviewing budgets and meeting your range officers. After lunch you might meet villagers about a crop-damage claim, or a wildlife rescue, or a land dispute. In the evening you write reports. On some days you may be on the road for hours in rough terrain or bad weather.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Science (PCB or PCM). Either works, because the degree subjects include both biology-side and maths/physics-side options. Spend time outdoors and read about forests and wildlife. This is not a rule. It just helps you find out if you like this kind of work.
  2. Step 2 · 3–4 years after Class 12Do a degree in one of the listed subjects (for example B.Sc Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths or Geology; or agriculture, forestry, veterinary science or engineering). Final-year students can apply for the prelims, but they need the degree by the time they take the Main exam (reported). The age limit is 21 to 32 years on 1 August of the exam year (reported). Attempts are 6 for General, 9 for OBC, and unlimited for SC/ST (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · Prelims (May)Apply for the Civil Services (Preliminary) Exam and tick the Indian Forest Service. In 2026 it was held on 24 May. The fee was ₹100, with no fee for women, SC, ST and PwBD candidates. It is an objective (MCQ) test, and it is the same test as the IAS prelims. UPSC then makes a separate list for IFS Main.
  4. Step 4 · Main exam (November)A written exam in six papers, taken over about a week. In 2026 it began on 22 November (reported). The papers are General English, General Knowledge, and two optional subjects at two papers each. Optional subjects are picked from science, agriculture and engineering lists. The total is 1,400 marks (reported). Admitted candidates pay ₹200, with no fee for women, SC, ST and PwBD candidates. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · Interview and medical/physical checkThe Personality Test (interview) is out of 300 marks (reported). Candidates must also meet the medical and physical standards in Appendix III of that year's IFS rules. These are checked at a government hospital after the interview (reported). Earlier rules had a walking test: 25 km in 4 hours for men and 14 km in 4 hours for women. They also had minimum height standards, 163 cm for men and 150 cm for women, with relaxations for some groups. Please read the current Appendix III. (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · About 2 years of trainingA 4-month Foundation Course at LBSNAA, Mussoorie, then about 20 months at the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA), Dehradun. The IGNFA training includes 4 months of on-the-job training in your state cadre. It is residential and starts each day with 45 minutes of physical training. You learn forest ecology, law and management. You also learn swimming, weapon handling, riding and jungle survival. During training you cannot sit other civil service exams.
  7. Step 7 · Probation and first postingYou are posted to a state cadre as an Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) on probation. After about four years from your year of allotment, you move to the Senior Time Scale and can head a forest division as a Divisional Forest Officer (reported). (reported — check with the official body)

Your real chances

In 2026, UPSC shortlisted 1,046 candidates for the IFS Main exam against 80 vacancies. In 2025 it was 2,116 shortlisted against 150 vacancies. That is for the Main stage only. Many more people sit the prelims, and UPSC has not published a single applicant count for the IFS in the pages I could read.

What people earn

Official pay

Pay Level 10 (Junior Time Scale, Assistant Conservator of Forests), ₹56,100 basic + allowances (7th CPC) (reported). Pay rises through the levels to the Apex Scale at the top of the state forest service (reported). The official pay matrix was not on the UPSC pages I could read.

Reported — check the official notice.

Basic pay is fixed by government pay levels and rises with years of service and promotions, but take-home changes with the city or forest posting, housing, and any central deputation.

Myth and fact

Myth: IFS officers spend their days in the jungle with tigers and elephants.
Fact: Field work is part of the job, but a lot of it is office and administrative work: plans, budgets, files, meetings, laws and dealing with people. Wildlife-heavy postings are only some of the postings, and they are not for everyone.

For girls and students with disabilities

Women, SC, ST and PwBD candidates pay no exam fee. Reserved vacancies exist for SC, ST, OBC, EWS and persons with benchmark disabilities, and age relaxations apply as per UPSC rules. Earlier physical standards were lower for women (a shorter walking test and a lower height minimum), but candidates with disabilities must still meet the fitness needed for forest duty, so read Appendix III of the current rules.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Keep a nature notebook this month. Note down 10 birds, trees or insects near your home or school, with a sketch of each. Try to find out their names.Open link ↗
  • Class 10–12Join or start a tree-planting or clean-up drive through your school eco club, NSS or MY Bharat. Then write a short note on what survived and what did not.Open link ↗
  • College or afterTake a free NPTEL or SWAYAM course in ecology, environment or GIS, and start reading one national newspaper daily. Both help for the exam.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • The number of vacancies is small and changes every year. UPSC notified 150 in 2025 and 80 in 2026. Many candidates also try for the IAS in the same cycle.
  • You are allotted a state or joint cadre. Expect to live and work where you are posted, often far from big cities, and to be transferred every few years.
  • Because the physical and medical standards matter, read Appendix III of the current rules early. It will tell you about eyesight, hearing and the walking test.
  • Prefer working on the ground in forests rather than in the central services? Look at forest-range-officer, which is a state-level route, and at wildlife-biologist and environmental-scientist.
