Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Working outdoors in forests and with wildlife instead of sitting in an office all day
- A steady government job with real responsibility for a large area
- Protecting something that many people depend on, like water, trees and animals
- Remote postings, frequent transfers and time away from family
- Physical demands: long walks, heat, rain, insects, and a strict walking test to enter
- Risk and stress when dealing with poachers, timber gangs or wild animals
- Class 11–12 subjects
- There is no national rule for Class 12 subjects. Most states ask for a science-based degree, so Class 11–12 Science (PCB or PCM) is the safest start. Forest Guard and Forester posts need only Class 10 or 12, depending on the state (reported).
- First degree
- A bachelor's degree for Range Forest Officer (RFO) posts. Bihar's 2026 notice (reported) accepts one subject from Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Maths, Physics, Statistics, Zoology or Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science. It also accepts a degree in Agriculture, Forestry or Engineering. Maharashtra's 2026 notice (reported) also lists Environmental Science and Computer Science. It lets non-science graduates in if they studied Maths. B.Sc takes 3 years and B.Sc Forestry takes 4. Forester and Forest Guard posts do not need a degree.
- Entrance exams
- The state public service commission or subordinate services board runs the RFO exam. Examples are BPSSC (Bihar), MPSC (Maharashtra) and APPSC (Andhra Pradesh). Forest Guard and Forester posts go through a state selection board or the forest department. UP uses UPSSSC (reported). The Indian Forest Service is a separate, senior UPSC route.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Looking after a forest range: guarding forest land, stopping poaching, illegal felling and encroachment, fighting forest fires, running plantation work, supervising foresters and forest guards, keeping records and working with villages near the forest.
A day in the work
The day often starts early, with a briefing to foresters and guards at the range office. Then you head into the forest by jeep or on foot to check a plantation, a fire line or a spot where trees were cut illegally. In the afternoon you write reports, sign work orders and meet villagers about grazing, firewood or wildlife trouble. In the dry season or during a fire alert, the day can run late, and you may be called out at night.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 10–12Take Science in Class 11–12 (Biology or Maths). Start building stamina by walking and running regularly, because every state has a physical test. If you want a Forest Guard or Forester job straight after school, check the state notice. Class 12 is asked for in UP (reported) and Class 10 in some other states (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 2 · 3–4 yearsDo a bachelor's degree in an accepted subject, such as Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Forestry, Environmental Science, Agriculture or Engineering. The list of accepted subjects differs by state, so check the latest notice. The age limit starts at 21 in the 2026 Bihar and Maharashtra notices (reported).
- Step 3 · Written examThe state commission holds the exam when it advertises posts, and gaps between recruitments can be long. In Bihar's 2026 notice (reported) the exam is a qualifying Hindi paper plus a 300-mark General Studies paper. Maharashtra's 2026 Forest Service exam (reported) has a prelims and a descriptive mains. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · InterviewShortlisted candidates face an interview. In Bihar it is worth 50 marks and in Maharashtra 275 marks (both reported). Final merit usually adds the written and interview marks. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · Physical test and medicalExpect a height and chest check and a long walking test, plus a medical exam including eyesight. Bihar's 2026 notice (reported) has a 25 km walk in 4 hours for men. UP's Forest Guard test (reported) is 14 km in 4 hours for women. Women's standards are lower, and each state sets its own. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · TrainingNew RFOs are trained at a forest academy. The Directorate of Forest Education (Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change) trains RFOs and the state forest service. One of its accredited institutions, the Himachal Pradesh Forest Academy, ran an 18-month certificate course for RFOs (2012 figure; check your state's current length).
- Step 7 · Probation and postingAfter training you are posted to a forest range as a probationer, then confirmed under your state's rules. Later promotion goes to the next rank in the state forest service. Serving RFOs also attend refresher courses run by the Directorate of Forest Education.
Ways in
- Direct entry as Range Forest OfficerFinish a science degree, then clear your state commission's RFO exam, interview, physical test and medical. This is the main way to become an RFO.
- Start as Forest Guard or Forester and get promotedJoin after Class 10 or 12 (depending on the state) through the state's forest guard recruitment. The Directorate of Forest Education lists Forest Guards, Foresters and Deputy Rangers as the frontline staff below the Range Officer. Promotion to Range Officer is possible in many states, but the rules and the time it takes vary, so check your state.

What people earn
Bihar Range Officer of Forests: Pay Level 6, ₹35,400–₹1,12,400 plus allowances (Advt. 10/2026, July 2026) (reported). Pay differs by state. For example, Maharashtra's 2026 notice lists ₹51,800–₹1,32,300 for Group-B Forest Range Officer (reported). Forest Guard in UP is Pay Level 2 (reported).

Pay is a fixed government scale that depends on the state, with allowances that rise or fall with posting, and it grows steadily with promotions rather than jumping early.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Women can apply, and physical standards are lower for them in states like UP and Bihar (reported). UP's 2026 Forest Guard notice reserves 20% of seats for women (reported). Age relaxations and disability rules differ by state, and this is a field job with a physical test, so read your state's notice closely.

Good to know
- Every state sets its own degree subjects, age limit, exam pattern and physical standards. The figures in this profile come from 2026 notices in Bihar, Maharashtra, UP and Andhra Pradesh (reported). Always read your own state's latest notice.
- Range Forest Officer is a state post. The Indian Forest Service (via UPSC) is a different and senior service. See the IFS profile if that is your goal.
- Forest postings can be remote, with long walks, fire seasons and confrontations with poachers or timber smugglers. Apply only on the official state commission or forest department website, and never pay anyone for a 'seat'.
