Environmental Scientist
Measures pollution, studies ecological damage and prepares environmental impact reports.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Spending time outdoors and seeing rivers, forests and factories up close
- Solving the puzzle of why a place is getting more polluted
- Seeing that careful data can lead to rules, clean-up or better projects
- Field work in heat, rain, dust or near heavy industry
- Long lab hours, strict record-keeping and report writing
- Contract posts and project-based jobs that can end or change at short notice
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 in Science. PCB is the most common route, since B.Sc and M.Sc Environmental Science need Chemistry and Biology. PCM also works if you later take B.Tech in Environmental Engineering. Aim for good marks, because government scientist posts ask for first-class degrees.
- First degree
- B.Sc Environmental Science or another B.Sc (3 years), then M.Sc Environmental Science or a related subject (2 years). A B.E./B.Tech in Environmental or Civil Engineering is also accepted for many posts.
- Entrance exams
- Entrance tests vary by university. For government scientist posts, a valid GATE score of 90 percentile or above, or NET-JRF, is often asked (reported, see steps).
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Collecting air and water samples at factories, rivers and towns; running lab tests; checking data against pollution limits; writing monitoring and assessment reports. In consultancies, you help prepare Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) reports that projects need before they can get clearance.
A day in the work
You start early at a river or factory outlet, filling sample bottles and noting the weather and flow. Back at the lab, you run tests on water or air and check the numbers against the permitted limits. The afternoon goes to writing up results, a short call with an industry client or a team member, and planning next week's site visits.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Science with Chemistry and Biology. Get comfortable with lab work and data tables. Read local news on pollution and climate to see how the subject connects to real places.
- Step 2 · After Class 12Take a 3-year B.Sc in Environmental Science, or a B.Sc in Chemistry, Botany, Zoology or Life Science. A B.Tech in Environmental Engineering is another route into the field.
- Step 3 · 2 years after the B.ScDo an M.Sc in Environmental Science or a related subject. Keep your marks high, since the central pollution board's 2026 scientist notice asks for a first-class degree (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · Final year of M.Sc or afterAppear for GATE or NET-JRF if you want research or government scientist posts. The 2026 central board notice asked for a GATE score of 90 percentile or above, or NET-JRF, for Scientist-B (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · 0–3 years of workStart with a state or central pollution board, a lab, or an EIA consultancy. Scientist-B posts in the 2026 central notice asked for about 3 years of relevant experience (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- OptionalDo a PhD for research posts, or add courses in EIA, GIS or environmental law for consultancy work.
Ways in
- Governmenta state or central pollution control board, through scientist posts that ask for an M.Sc or engineering degree plus GATE or NET and experience.
- Privatean environmental consultancy that prepares EIA and environmental management plans, often working with NABET-accredited teams.
- Researcha university, lab or research institute, usually after an M.Sc and a PhD.

What people earn
Pay depends heavily on whether you work for the government or a private firm, on your degree level and experience, and on the city where you are posted.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Government recruitment in this field follows central rules on age relaxation and reservation for SC, ST, OBC and persons with disabilities. The exact relaxation is written in each notice. I did not find a rule specific to women or to this career.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Pick a local pond, drain or river. Note its colour, smell and any litter for a month in a simple notebook, then share your notes with your science teacher.
- Class 10–12Browse the free lectures in this NPTEL course on Environmental Science. Enrolment is free, and only the optional certificate exam has a fee.Open link ↗
- College or afterTake the free NPTEL course on Basic Environmental Engineering and Pollution Abatement, which is pitched at undergraduate and postgraduate students.Open link ↗
Good to know
- Most government scientist posts in this field are contract jobs at first, often for one year and renewable. Check the notice for the exact terms.
- Private EIA work often needs a consultancy that holds NABET (Quality Council of India) accreditation for the project's sector. Your career is more stable if you work for an accredited firm or a regulator.
- A B.Sc in Environmental Science is a useful base. Many people also study Chemistry, Botany or Zoology first and then move into the field at the M.Sc level.
