Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Combining art, nature and problem-solving in one job
- Seeing a project you drew become a real place people use
- Being outdoors on site visits as well as designing at a desk
- It takes about 5 years of study, and usually 2 more for a master's
- The field is small, with few master's seats and fewer specialist firms outside big cities
- Projects take years, and site work in heat and rain is part of the job
- Class 11–12 subjects
- For the usual route (B.Arch), you need Class 12 with Physics and Maths compulsory, plus one of Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, IT, Informatics Practices, Engineering Graphics, Business Studies or a technical vocational subject. You need at least 45% overall. A 10+3 diploma with Maths and 45% also works.
- First degree
- B.Arch (5 years), then usually a 2-year master's in Landscape Architecture, such as the M.Arch (Landscape Architecture) at SPA Delhi.
- Entrance exams
- For B.Arch: NATA (Council of Architecture) or JEE Main Paper 2A (NTA). For the master's: the college's own process. SPA Delhi's master's seats go through a joint national admission process (JAAP-PG), which is reported to use GATE or CEED scores.
- Licence or registration
- No separate licence is needed to call yourself a "landscape architect". The Architects Act, 1972 says the rule that only registered architects may use the title "architect" does not apply to people designated as landscape architects. If you hold a B.Arch, you can still register with the Council of Architecture, and registration is needed to practise as an "architect".
What the work is like
Planning and designing parks, gardens, school and college campuses, housing layouts, roads and riverfronts. You work out where paths, water, trees, seating and buildings go. You make drawings and models, and visit sites. You work with architects, engineers and clients.
A day in the work
You might start at a studio table, adjusting a park plan on the computer. You decide where the walking track goes, which trees give shade and how rainwater will drain. Later you visit the site with an engineer, check levels and see how the real ground differs from the drawing. In the evening you update drawings after a client's comments and choose plants that survive the local climate.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 9–11Start sketching what you see: trees, parks, streets, how people use open spaces. In Class 11, choose Physics and Maths, which are compulsory for B.Arch.
- Step 2 · Class 12Take NATA or JEE Main Paper 2A. In 2026, NATA Phase 1 ran from 4 April to 13 June, with up to 2 attempts and the best score counting. Phase 2 was on 7–8 August, with 1 attempt, for those who skipped Phase 1. A NATA score is valid only for that year's admissions. Check nata.in for the next cycle's dates.
- Step 3 · 5 yearsB.Arch at a Council of Architecture-approved college. It includes a practical-training period in an office. Landscape is usually a small part of this degree, so choose design electives and projects on open spaces if you can. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · 2 yearsMaster's in Landscape Architecture. At SPA Delhi, the M.Arch (Landscape Architecture) needs at least 55% marks in the qualifying degree (50% for SC/ST/OBC). Seats are few: 29 in 2024-25. Check each year's notice for how selection is done. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · After the degreeJoin a landscape or architecture firm, a government department or a developer. Build a portfolio. Learn plants and ecology, drawing software and mapping tools such as GIS. (reported — check with the official body)
- OptionalRegister with the Council of Architecture under the Architects Act if you also want to practise as a registered architect.
Ways in
- B.Arch, then master's in Landscape ArchitectureClass 12 (PCM) → NATA or JEE Paper 2A → B.Arch (5 years) → M.Arch Landscape Architecture (2 years). This is the most common route. It also keeps the option of CoA registration open.
- Another first degree, then the master'sSPA Delhi's 2025 admission notice allows entry to its landscape master's with a bachelor's in landscape architecture, architecture, planning or civil engineering. It also allows a 4-year bachelor's in interior or urban design, or a master's in Botany, Zoology, Horticulture, Agriculture, Forestry, Ecology, Geology, Geomorphology or Geography. Students from non-architecture courses must earn extra credits set by the institute. Other colleges have their own rules.

What people earn
Earnings usually start modest in design firms and grow with experience, a strong portfolio and a good name. They vary a lot between big-city firms, small studios, government bodies and your own practice.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Reservation applies in SPA Delhi's landscape master's, with seats for SC, ST, OBC and EWS candidates and a 5% lower marks cut-off for SC/ST/OBC. The NATA 2026 brochure has relaxation provisions for candidates with benchmark disability, including specific learning disability such as dyslexia, with a government medical certificate.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Draw a simple map of a nearby park or your school ground. Mark the trees, shade, paths and where people sit. Then note one thing you would change.
- Class 10–12Learn to identify 10 trees or plants near your home, and sketch each one. Use a free, well-known biodiversity site to check names.Open link ↗
- College or afterDownload free QGIS and make a map of a green space in your city, such as a park, lake edge or campus. It is a useful skill for site analysis.Open link ↗
Good to know
- The title "landscape architect" is not protected by law in India the way "architect" is. In practice, clients and firms look at your degree, your portfolio and your site experience.
- Landscape master's seats are few. SPA Delhi's M.Arch (Landscape Architecture) had 29 seats in 2024-25. Apply to several colleges and plan early.
- Students admitted to B.Arch without clearing the Council's aptitude test are not eligible for CoA registration, so check that a college and its seats are CoA-approved.
- Not sure about 5 years of architecture? Look at urban planning, environmental science or horticulture, which also lead to work with land and open spaces.
