Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Practical, outdoor work with big machines, rocks and real-world problems
  • Taking responsibility for people's safety and seeing the results of good planning
  • Working in a team of geologists, surveyors, mechanics and workers
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Postings are often in remote mining areas, far from big cities, and transfers can happen
  • Shift work, heat, dust and noise are part of the job, and underground work is not for everyone
  • Safety duties carry serious legal responsibility, and you will need extra certificates and exams after the degree
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM). Most IITs, NITs and other JoSAA colleges usually ask for about 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST/PwD), or a top-20-percentile rank in your board. Check the latest JoSAA rules each year. A 3-year diploma in mining after Class 10 is a separate, lower-level entry.
First degree
B.Tech / B.E. in Mining Engineering, 4 years. Coal India's 2026 notice asked for a mining degree with at least 60% marks.
Entrance exams
JEE Main (NTA) for NITs and other JoSAA colleges, and JEE Advanced for IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and other IITs. Then GATE (Mining, paper code MN) for Coal India's trainee posts. After joining a mine, DGMS competency exams for statutory posts such as mine manager.
Licence or registration
To be a mine manager, you need a Manager's Certificate of Competency from the Board of Mining Examinations, which works under the Director General of Mines Safety (DGMS). The Coal Mines Regulations say which mines need a First or Second Class certificate. This depends on how much the mine produces each month.

What the work is like

Planning how to dig a mine safely; drilling and blasting; slope and roof support; ventilation; running machines and trucks; checking safety rules; estimating output and cost; working with geologists, surveyors and mine workers.

A day in the work
You may start early at the mine, check the previous shift's report and walk the working area with your supervisors. You look at roof and slope conditions, ventilation, and the plan for drilling and blasting. Midday goes to meetings, checking drawings and production numbers, and fixing a problem with a machine or a delay. You end by writing up the report, because safety records matter as much as output.

Professional qualificationRun by Board of Mining Examinations, Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS), Ministry of Labour and Employment. You can start after: Class 12 with PCM, then a mining degree or diploma. Minimum time: 4 years B.Tech, then about 2 years of mine experience before the First Class Manager's exam (older DGMS notices; check current bye-laws).

The full route: exams, training, registration

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12Take PCM and score well in the Class 12 boards. Colleges set minimum marks, and later a mining degree with 60% or more is needed for Coal India's trainee post.
  2. Step 2 · Class 12Write JEE Main (for NITs and other JoSAA colleges) and JEE Advanced if you want IIT (ISM) Dhanbad or another IIT. Then take part in JoSAA or state counselling and choose Mining Engineering. Some states and private colleges have their own entrance tests.
  3. Step 3 · 4 yearsB.Tech in Mining Engineering. Keep your marks above 60%, since Coal India's 2026 notice asked for that. Mine visits and vacation training are common in mining colleges (reported).
  4. Step 4 · Final year or afterWrite GATE in the Mining paper (MN). Coal India's Advertisement 01/2026 shortlisted candidates category-wise in the ratio 1:3 using GATE-2025 scores only. Scores from other years were not valid for that notice, so read each year's notice carefully.
  5. Step 5 · After shortlistingDocument verification and a medical examination (reported). The final merit list for the Mining discipline is made on GATE score. (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · 1 yearJoin as Management Trainee (E-1 grade). You get 1 year of paid training-cum-probation. If it goes well, you are confirmed as Officer (Mining).
  7. Step 7 · After some years in a mineEarn DGMS competency certificates by working in mines and passing the computer-based exams. DGMS grants some certificates to mining degree holders without an exam (on an exemption basis). Higher ones, such as the First Class Manager's Certificate, need mine experience plus a paper. Check DGMS's current bye-laws for exact years and papers.

Ways in

  • B.Tech then a PSU job through GATEJEE → B.Tech in Mining → GATE (MN) → Coal India or another PSU's trainee post. Merit is decided mainly by GATE score in the 2026 Coal India notice. Notices differ by year and employer.
  • B.Tech then a private mining or metals companyCampus placement or direct applications to private mining, cement and metals companies. This route does not need GATE. Hiring depends on the company and the market.
  • Diploma in Mining after Class 10A 3-year diploma leads to supervisory roles. DGMS rules let diploma holders earn manager certificates too, but they need more years of mine experience than degree holders.
Recently changed, or still changing
  • DGMS says the Manager's Certificate exam is computer-based only, with no oral test.
  • DGMS announces its competency exam dates and application windows in notices on its website. These change from year to year.

What people earn

Official pay

Management Trainee, E-1 grade: pay scale ₹60,000–1,80,000, with an initial basic of ₹60,000 per month during the 1-year training-cum-probation (Coal India Advt 01/2026). Allowances come on top.

Pay starts decently in PSUs and large mining companies and grows with grade, years and statutory certificates; it varies by employer, by whether the site is remote, and by whether you work in coal, metals or private mining.

Myth and fact

Myth: Mining engineers spend their whole career deep underground in dark tunnels.
Fact: Many mines, especially for coal, are opencast, and much of a mining engineer's work is planning, safety checks and managing people and machines, on the surface as well as below. Underground experience does matter for the higher manager certificates, though.

For girls and students with disabilities

Coal India's 2026 notice shortlists candidates category-wise, with vacancies split among UR, EWS, SC, ST and OBC-NCL. Relaxations in age and marks, and application-fee exemption for SC/ST/PwBD, are given in the notice (reported). Read the notice for physical and medical standards before applying. Underground and shift work can be demanding, so ask each employer what work they offer to women and to candidates with disabilities.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Start a small rock and mineral collection from your area. Learn to tell hard from soft minerals by scratching them with a coin and a nail, and note where each one came from.
  • Class 10–12Pick one NCERT Physics or Maths chapter this month (such as Laws of Motion or Calculus) and solve 10 questions from it. These are the base for JEE and for mining subjects like rock mechanics.Open link ↗
  • College or afterBrowse the free NPTEL/SWAYAM mining and earth-science courses and note one topic to study, such as mine safety or ventilation. Also read the DGMS website to see how competency exams and safety circulars are announced.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • Coal India's Advertisement 01/2026 (dated 5 May 2026) used GATE-2025 scores. Its pay is a scale of ₹60,000–1,80,000 for the E-1 grade. Always read the newest notice on coalindia.in, because the process and scores accepted can change by year.
  • A mining degree is the base for the work. A DGMS certificate is what legally lets you manage a mine. The Coal Mines Regulations also expect mine inspectors to hold a mining degree or diploma plus a First Class Manager's Certificate.
  • Mining work is often at remote sites in coal and mineral belts such as Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. Postings can be far from big cities.
  • Interested in the earth and rocks but not in running a mine? Look at geology and metallurgy too.
