Mining Engineer (Coal India)
Plans and supervises safe underground and open-cast coal mining operations.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Seeing big machines, geology and engineering come together in real working mines
- Having real responsibility for people's safety and for output early in your career
- A stable, well-known public sector employer with a clear promotion ladder
- You can be posted anywhere in India, often in remote coalfield areas, and you cannot choose
- Work can mean shifts, dust, heat, noise and time underground; safety rules are strict
- You must serve at least 5 years under the bond, and vacancies and GATE score cut-offs change every year
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM) is the usual route into a B.Tech in Mining Engineering through JEE. Check the exact Class 12 marks rule for the year on the JoSAA and JEE sites.
- First degree
- B.Tech in Mining Engineering, 4 years, full-time. Coal India asked for at least 60% marks (55% for SC/ST) in its 2026 notice.
- Entrance exams
- JEE Main and/or JEE Advanced for a B.Tech seat (through JoSAA counselling). Then GATE, Mining Engineering paper (code MN). Coal India picks Management Trainees on GATE score only, with no separate written test.
- Licence or registration
- No licence is needed to join Coal India as a Management Trainee. To be the legally named mine manager later, you need a DGMS Manager's Certificate of Competency. For a First Class Manager (unrestricted) certificate, the DGMS table needs a mining degree, a Second Class Manager's certificate, a gas-testing certificate, and about 2 years' experience in an underground mine after the degree.
What the work is like
Planning how coal is dug out, supervising shifts, checking ventilation, roof support, blasting and machinery, following safety law, and meeting production targets in underground and open-cast mines.
A day in the work
You reach the mine before the shift begins and sit in on a briefing with overmen and supervisors. Then you walk the working area, either an open-cast bench or an underground gallery, and check ventilation, roof support, blasting plans and machine condition. Back in the office, you go over the day's coal output against target, sign off safety reports and plan the next shift. If something goes wrong, such as a gas reading or a breakdown, you are the one called to decide.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Physics, Chemistry and Maths. These are what JEE tests, and a B.Tech seat in Mining depends on JEE.
- Step 2 · Class 12Write JEE Main and/or JEE Advanced and join a Mining Engineering B.Tech through JoSAA counselling. IIT (ISM) Dhanbad is one of the institutes in JoSAA. Check the seat matrix each year for the other colleges that offer Mining.
- Step 3 · 4 yearsDo the B.Tech in Mining Engineering. Aim for at least 60% marks (55% if SC/ST), because Coal India's 2026 notice set this as the minimum. Expect mine visits and vacation training. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · Final year or afterAppear in GATE, Mining Engineering paper (MN). Coal India's 2026 notice (Advt 01/2026) accepted only GATE-2025 scores. Its latest notice (Advt 06/2026, 17 Aug 2026) says to appear in GATE-2027 Mining. The full advertisement is due in 2027.
- Step 5 · When Coal India advertisesApply online on coalindia.in. There is no written test or interview. Candidates are shortlisted category-wise on GATE score, in a 1:3 ratio to vacancies. In 2026 the fee was ₹1,180 for General/OBC/EWS, and nil for SC/ST.
- Step 6 · Document verification and medicalShortlisted candidates go through document verification (DV) and an initial medical examination (IME). The offer of appointment is issued only after both are cleared.
- Step 7 · 1 yearJoin as Management Trainee in E-1 grade for one year of training-cum-probation, paid from the first month. If it goes well, you are confirmed as Officer (Mining). You must serve at least 60 months and sign a ₹3 lakh service bond.
- Optional, after joiningWork towards the DGMS Manager's Certificate of Competency (a computer-based test only, per DGMS). It is needed to be a statutory mine manager.
Your real chances
In May 2026, Coal India advertised 276 Management Trainee (Mining) vacancies (Advt 01/2026), taken on GATE-2025 scores. I could not find an official figure for how many people applied. The number of vacancies changes every year.

Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Coal India's 2026 notice follows Government of India reservation for SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), EWS and ex-servicemen. SC/ST get 5 percentage points lower minimum marks (55% instead of 60%), 5 years' age relaxation and no application fee. OBC (non-creamy layer) gets 3 years' age relaxation. I could not confirm from the notice any posts reserved for women or students with disabilities. Every selected candidate must also clear the initial medical examination.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Collect 5–6 different rocks or soil samples, label them, and find out where coal, iron and limestone are found in India. Ask your science teacher to help you identify them.
- Class 10–12Start building strong Physics and Maths basics, since JEE tests these. Browse the free NPTEL site for introductory earth-science and engineering lectures, with a parent or teacher.Open link ↗
- College or afterRead the DGMS page on competency exams to see what mine managers must know. Ask your department about mine visits or a vacation training, and solve the free past GATE Mining papers.Open link ↗
Good to know
- The GATE year matters. The 2026 notice accepted only GATE-2025 scores. Always read the current notice on coalindia.in for which GATE year it accepts. Coal India's 17 Aug 2026 notice says the next round will use GATE-2027 Mining scores.
- Service bond: at least 60 months of service, a ₹3 lakh bond, and ₹5,000 a month deducted from salary. The bond money is refunded without interest after 60 months.
- Coal India says it charges only the application fee and nothing else. Use coalindia.in only and ignore anyone who asks for money to 'get you the job'.
- Coal India is one employer. Other coal and mining companies, state mining bodies and private mining firms also hire mining engineers. Their rules are different.
