Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Being outdoors, walking through hills, rivers and forests
  • Solving puzzles about how the earth formed and what lies underground
  • Work that matters for water, minerals, roads, dams and landslide safety
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Long field seasons away from home, often in remote places with basic facilities
  • Long study route (B.Sc plus M.Sc) and a tough exam with very few posts
  • Transfers across states, and fewer private jobs in some years when mining and oil slow down
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 with Science. Most B.Sc Geology courses ask for Physics and Chemistry plus Maths or Biology, but each university sets its own rule, so check the one you want. Geology is a degree subject. Most schools don't teach it.
First degree
B.Sc Geology (3 years, or 4 years in some universities), then M.Sc in Geology or Applied Geology (2 years). The UPSC Geo-Scientist exam asks for a master's degree.
Entrance exams
UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist Examination (Prelims, Mains, Interview) for Group A and B posts in the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB). For M.Sc entry you need a university entrance test or, for some institutes, IIT JAM (check each institute).
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Mapping rocks in the field, searching for minerals and groundwater, studying landslides and earthquake risk, testing rock and water samples, and writing reports. Government geologists work for GSI and CGWB. Others work in mining, oil and gas, construction and environment firms.

A day in the work
On a field day you leave camp early with a map, hammer, compass and sample bags. You walk along a stream or hillside, note the rock types and mark them on the map. In the evening you write notes and label your samples. On office days you test samples in the lab, make maps on a computer and write reports. Field seasons can mean weeks away from home, with simple living conditions.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Science. Physics, Chemistry and Maths or Biology keeps most B.Sc Geology doors open. Start noticing rocks, mountains, rivers and soil around you. Check the exact subject rule of each university you like. (reported — check with the official body)
  2. Step 2 · 3 to 4 yearsB.Sc Geology at a university or college. You will study minerals, rocks, fossils, maps and earth structure. Field trips and lab work are a big part of it.
  3. Step 3 · 2 yearsM.Sc in Geology, Applied Geology or a related subject. UPSC lists specific master's subjects for each post. Final-year students can apply, but must upload proof of passing before the interview.
  4. Step 4 · PrelimsUPSC Combined Geo-Scientist Prelims. The 2027 cycle's Prelims is on 10 January 2027. There are two objective papers: General Studies (100 marks) and Geology/Hydrogeology (300 marks). Wrong answers lose marks. The notice for each year usually comes out in early September (3 Sept 2025, 2 Sept 2026).
  5. Step 5 · MainsThree written papers of 200 marks each (600 in total), all on Geology or Hydrogeology. The 2027 Mains starts on 19 June 2027. In the 2026 notice, answers had to be written in English only. Prelims marks also count towards the final merit.
  6. Step 6 · InterviewA 200-mark Personality Test at UPSC, New Delhi. You bring your original documents. Your final rank comes from Prelims + Mains + Interview (1,200 marks).
  7. Step 7 · After selectionAppointment is temporary at first. New geologists then do induction and field training at the GSI Training Institute (GSITI). A draft rule from the Ministry of Mines mentions a one-year in-service programme during probation. (reported — check with the official body)

Ways in

  • UPSC Geo-Scientist exam (main government route)B.Sc, then M.Sc, then the UPSC exam. This leads to Group A posts such as Geologist at GSI or Scientist 'B' at CGWB. Group B assistant posts are also filled through the same exam.
  • PSU jobs in oil, gas and coalPublic sector companies such as ONGC and Coal India hire geoscientists, usually through GATE and an interview (reported). Check each company's own notice.Reported — confirm on the official site.
  • Research, teaching or private workM.Sc, then NET or PhD for universities and research institutes. Private mining, groundwater, construction and environmental consulting firms also hire geologists. These jobs don't need the UPSC exam.

Your real chances

The 2027 notice says about six to seven times the number of vacancies are called for the Main exam. The 2027 notice is reported to list 127 tentative vacancies across all GSI and CGWB posts, and the Geologist Group A post is reported to have far fewer. Final results for the 2026 cycle are reported to have recommended 66 candidates against 69 vacancies. I could not find an official applicant count, so the competition is very high but I can't give a figure.

What people earn

Official pay

Group A Geologist: Pay Level 10, ₹56,100 basic + allowances (7th CPC) (reported). I could not confirm this on an official page, so check the pay line in the latest UPSC notice or the appointment letter.

Reported — check the official notice.

Government geologists get a fixed pay scale that rises with promotions, while private and oil-and-gas jobs can pay more or less depending on the company, the location and the market for minerals and oil.

Myth and fact

Myth: To become a government geologist you have to clear the IAS exam.
Fact: No. Geologists in GSI and CGWB are chosen through their own UPSC exam, the Combined Geo-Scientist Examination. It needs a master's degree in geology or a related subject.

For girls and students with disabilities

Women, SC, ST and PwBD candidates paid no exam fee in the 2026 notice. The 2027 notice reserves 8 vacancies for persons with benchmark disability in the GSI posts and 2 in the CGWB posts, and lists the physical requirements for each post. Candidates must meet the medical and physical standards set for the post they are allotted.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Collect 10 different rocks or pebbles from your area. Note colour, hardness (does a coin or nail scratch it?) and where you found each one. Keep a small notebook. Visit a science museum or university geology department if one is nearby.
  • Class 10–12Look through free earth science courses on SWAYAM or NPTEL, and read about the rocks and landforms of your own district.Open link ↗
  • College or afterAsk your department about field camps, and watch for GSITI's Bhuvisamvad programme, which connects GSI with college students and teachers. Also read the exam pattern and past papers on the UPSC website early.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • A B.Sc alone is not enough for the UPSC Geo-Scientist exam. The notice asks for a master's degree in the listed subjects.
  • Age limit in the 2027 notice: 21 to 32 years as on 1 January 2027, with relaxations for reserved categories. Read the notice for your category.
  • Very few posts: the 2027 notice is reported to list 127 tentative vacancies across GSI and CGWB, and the notice itself says the numbers can change.
  • Government geologists often spend months in the field, sometimes in remote hills, forests or deserts, and may be transferred across India.
