Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Caring for patients while also holding the rank and respect of an officer.
  • Free education and training, a steady career, and a chance to serve in many parts of India.
  • A close, disciplined team of doctors, nurses and soldiers.
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Postings change often and can be far from home, including remote or high-altitude areas. You cannot choose your posting in the early years.
  • Shifts, long hours and emergencies. Entry is competitive and there is a bond to serve.
  • Entry rules are strict: women only, the marital-status rule at entry, height standards and a tough medical board.
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany and Zoology) and English, at least 50% overall, passed in the first attempt (reported, from the 2026 admission notice).
First degree
B.Sc Nursing, 4 years, at one of six Colleges of Nursing run by the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS). If you already hold a B.Sc, Post-Basic B.Sc or M.Sc Nursing, there is a separate direct-entry route (see routes).
Entrance exams
NEET (UG), held by the NTA, is the first filter. AFMS then runs its own computer-based test of general intelligence and English (ToGIGE), a psychological assessment, an interview and a medical board (reported, 2026 notice).
Licence or registration
For direct entry, the candidate must be a registered Nurse and Midwife with a State Nursing Council. This is stated on the official Join Indian Army MNS page, which carries an older notice.

What the work is like

Nursing care in military hospitals, plus work with the Army, Navy and Air Force. Ward and ICU care, operation theatres, emergency care, patient teaching, supervising junior staff, and postings to field and high-altitude areas when needed.

A day in the work
You start the morning with a handover from the night shift, then check on your patients: vitals, medicines, dressings and any worries from soldiers or their families. Between rounds you work with doctors, guide junior nursing staff and keep records. In a big base hospital you might be in the ICU or OT; in a field or border posting you may be the main medical support for miles. Alongside nursing, you still do officer duties, such as physical training, parades and administration.

Professional qualificationRun by Indian Nursing Council and State Nursing Councils (registration as Nurse and Midwife). You can start after: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English. Minimum time: 4 years after Class 12.

The full route: exams, training, registration

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English. Aim for at least 50% overall and pass Class 12 in your first attempt, because a repeat attempt makes you ineligible. Girls need a minimum height of 152 cm (147 cm for hill and North-Eastern states), with a 2 cm growth allowance if you are under 18 at the time of the exam (reported, 2025–26 notices). (reported — check with the official body)
  2. Step 2 · Class 12Appear for NEET (UG), conducted by NTA each year, and qualify. The score of the same year is used to shortlist you for AFMS (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · After NEET results (July in 2026)Register online at joinindianarmy.nic.in and upload your NEET scorecard. In 2026 the window ran from 20 July and was extended to 3 August; the fee was ₹200, with SC/ST candidates exempt. You must be born between 1 Oct 2001 and 30 Sep 2009, and be unmarried, divorced, legally separated or a widow without encumbrances (reported, 2026). (reported — check with the official body)
  4. Step 4 · ScreeningIf shortlisted, you go to Base Hospital, Delhi Cantt for the ToGIGE computer test, the psychological assessment and an interview. The final merit list combines your NEET, ToGIGE and psychological/interview scores (reported, 2026). (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · Medical boardA Special Medical Board checks you against armed forces standards. Selection is subject to medical fitness. Many candidates are lost at this stage, so go to all health checks on time (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · 4 years of trainingB.Sc Nursing at one of the six AFMS colleges: Pune, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, Lucknow or Bengaluru. You sign a bond to serve as an MNS officer. During the course you get free ration, accommodation, a uniform allowance and a monthly stipend (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  7. Step 7 · Commission and careerOn completing the course you are granted a Permanent or Short Service Commission in the MNS and start as Lieutenant. The official Join Indian Army page shows promotion to Captain after 3 years and Major after 8 years of commissioned service, then Lt Col, Colonel, Brigadier and Major General by selection.

Ways in

  • After Class 12: AFMS B.Sc NursingStarts after: Class 12 (PCB + English) and NEET (UG) A 4-year degree at an AFMS college, then a commission as Lieutenant. This is the main route today. It is open to women only.
  • After a nursing degree: direct Short Service CommissionStarts after: B.Sc, Post-Basic B.Sc or M.Sc Nursing, plus State Nursing Council registration The official Join Indian Army page (an older notice) describes a written test, interview and medical, and a first tenure of 5 years extendable to 14 years (5+5+4). Permanent Commission is considered later, subject to vacancies. It is advertised only when vacancies exist, so check the current notice.
Recently changed, or still changing
  • The NEET (UG) score of the same admission year is used for AFMS shortlisting, so you cannot carry an old score forward (reported).
  • Age bands, seat numbers, fees and dates change every year. Always read the current notice on joinindianarmy.nic.in.

Your real chances

The Ministry of Defence told Parliament in December 2022 that the College of Nursing (MNS) intake was 220, and that such vacancies are not fixed and depend on service needs. Reports of the 2025 and 2026 notices also say 220 seats across six colleges (reported). No official applicant number is published, so we cannot give a ratio, but 220 seats for a whole country means competition is stiff.

What people earn

Official pay

Rank of Lieutenant on joining. Pay Level 10 (basic ₹56,100) plus Military Service Pay, DA and other allowances, with ration and accommodation (reported). The official page I could open shows an older notice (2016) with basic ₹15,600 + grade pay ₹5,400 + Military Service Pay. The Level 10 figure comes from reports on the MNS pay rules, not from a current official notice.

You are paid by rank, so pay rises with promotions and years of service, and extra allowances come with field, high-altitude or remote postings; free medical care and housing add to the real value. There is a monthly stipend during the 4 years of training.

Myth and fact

Myth: Army nurses are just hospital staff, not real officers.
Fact: MNS nurses are commissioned officers. They start as Lieutenant and can rise through Captain, Major and Colonel to Brigadier and Major General, as listed on the official Join Indian Army page.

For girls and students with disabilities

This entry is open to women only. Military nursing is described by the Ministry of Defence as a women-only entry, and PIB says Permanent Commission is granted in the MNS. Girls from hill and North-Eastern states can be accepted at 147 cm instead of 152 cm, and SC/ST seats and NCC 'C' seats have been reserved in earlier notices (reported). There is no disability relaxation I could find, because medical fitness is checked against armed forces standards.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Learn basic first aid (bandaging, CPR basics, handling a burn or a faint) from your school nurse or a local Red Cross or St John unit, and practise with friends.
  • Class 10–12Join the NCC in your school or college if it is offered. NCC 'C' certificate holders are asked to upload it, and earlier notices reserved some seats for them (reported). Also check your height and build a daily fitness habit.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • This entry is for women only. The Ministry of Defence has described military nursing as a women-only entry (PIB, December 2022). Boys interested in nursing can look at civil nursing or paramedical roles.
  • Seats are few. About 220 B.Sc Nursing seats are offered across six colleges, and the Ministry says the number is not fixed.
  • MNS officers serve in the Army, Navy and Air Force hospitals. PIB (August 2023) counted 3,841 MNS women in the Army, 380 in the Navy and 425 in the Air Force.
  • You are bound to serve after training, and postings can be anywhere in India. Read the bond terms in the notice before you apply. The 2026 notice mentions bond money if you leave, but the amount was not stated in the reports I could read (reported).
