Project Manager
Plans and leads projects to finish on time, within budget and to the agreed quality.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Seeing a messy goal turn into a clear plan that finishes
- Bringing different people together and keeping them on track
- Solving problems that come up in real time
- Pressure from deadlines, budget limits and angry clients
- Being responsible for results you do not fully control
- Long hours near project end dates or during go-live periods
- Class 11–12 subjects
- There is no set school stream for this job. Arts, Commerce or Science in Class 12 all lead to degrees that can be used. Good maths, clear writing and comfort with spreadsheets help a lot in the work.
- First degree
- Most people need a bachelor's degree in any subject, such as B.Com, BBA, B.Tech or BA. PMI's PMP rules ask for a four-year degree or its global equivalent. Check the exact rule before you rely on a three-year degree.
- Entrance exams
- Two main certifications. The PMP from the Project Management Institute (PMI) is the most widely held. PRINCE2 from PeopleCert is a structured method used often in government and large organisations. The PMP route depends on years of work. The PRINCE2 route depends on exams.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Planning scope, schedules and budgets. Tracking progress and fixing delays. Managing risks and changes. Leading teams and keeping clients, sponsors and vendors informed. Most work is in IT, construction, banking, consulting, events and government projects.
A day in the work
The day often starts with a quick check of progress reports and any issues raised overnight. You then run a short team meeting to see who is blocked and what needs to change. Much of the rest goes on updating plans, talking to clients or vendors, and sorting out risks before they become delays. You end by writing a status update for senior managers.
The path, step by step
- Class 10–12Choose the stream you like. Take part in school events or clubs where you plan, split tasks and meet deadlines. These build habits, but school projects do not count toward PMP experience.
- College (3–4 years)Complete a bachelor's degree in any subject. A degree is needed for the PMP route, so pick one with strong written and maths skills.
- After degree · 3 years of workGain paid or professional work where you lead or direct projects. PMI counts months of project leadership, not your job title. The window is recent years only, so keep records of dates, roles and results.
- Before applying for PMPComplete 35 contact hours of formal project management education, or hold an active CAPM certification. From 1 December 2026, live classes count only if run by a PMI-approved provider or an accredited programme.
- PMP examApply through PMI's online system, pay the fee and wait for approval. Once approved you have one year to sit the exam, with up to three attempts.
- Optional · PRINCE2Take PRINCE2 Foundation (no prerequisites), then Practitioner. Practitioner needs a Foundation pass or a credential such as PMP or CAPM. Both exams are run by PeopleCert. (reported — check with the official body)
Ways in
- PMP routeDegree plus about 3 years of documented project leadership, plus 35 hours of training or CAPM. Strong for jobs where PMI is known.
- PRINCE2 routeFoundation and Practitioner exams with no work experience needed for Foundation. Often asked for in government, UK-linked and large organisation projects.
- Start small, then certifyMany people begin as a project coordinator or team lead, collect project months, and add the certificate later.

What people earn
Pay varies a lot. Entry-level coordinators earn much less than senior project managers, and pay is higher in big cities and large firms, especially in IT and construction.
Myth and fact
Try it now
- Class 7–9Plan a small class or school event on paper. Write the tasks, who does each one, and the deadline. Share the plan and check how far you got.
- Class 10–12Enrol free in an NPTEL project management course and watch the first two weeks. You can skip the paid certificate exam.Open link ↗
- College or afterVolunteer to coordinate a college fest, a club drive or an NGO event for a few weeks. Keep notes on your role, the timeline and the result, since this is the kind of experience PMI counts when it is in a professional setting.Open link ↗
Good to know
- Certifications alone do not make you a project manager. Employers look for real projects you have led.
- PMI's current page says the experience must fall within the last 10 years. An older PMI handbook in the sources said 8 years. Check PMI's latest rules before you apply.
- PRINCE2 Practitioner and PMP both need renewal or continuing learning. Check each body's current rules before you choose one.
