Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Solving customer problems using data and conversations
  • Working across teams and seeing ideas reach real users
  • Making decisions with incomplete information and learning from the results
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Pressure from many sides, including engineers, sales teams and senior leaders
  • You are responsible for outcomes that you may not fully control
  • Entry roles can be competitive, and the MBA route adds two more years of study and high fees
Class 11–12 subjects
Any Class 12 stream can lead to a degree that opens this path. Strong reasoning, basic maths and clear English help, because the job is about making decisions and explaining them. Many people enter from engineering or computer science, but business, economics, design and science graduates also move into product roles.
First degree
A B.Tech or any bachelor's degree is the usual start. Many people then do an MBA with a product focus, or join an Associate Product Manager (APM) programme at a company.
Entrance exams
There is no single exam for the job itself. For an MBA route, CAT is the main entry test for the IIMs and many other business schools. Company APM programmes use their own tests and interviews.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Deciding what the product should do and why; writing requirement documents and setting priorities; working with designers, engineers, marketers and sales teams; studying customer feedback and usage data; overseeing launches and reviewing results after release.

A day in the work
A product manager often starts by checking how the product did the day before, such as sign-ups, sales and bug reports from users. Much of the morning goes to meetings with engineers and designers about what to build next and why. Afternoons may go to reading customer feedback, writing a short requirement document, or reviewing a design with the team. Launch weeks can run late, while quieter weeks leave time for research and planning.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 10–12Any stream is fine. Keep Maths and English strong, and get into the habit of asking why an app or product is built the way it is.
  2. Step 2 · Degree (3–4 years)Take a B.Tech, B.Sc, B.Com or another degree. Pick electives in computing, data or business, and join a college tech or product club.
  3. Step 3 · Final yearsDo internships or take entry-level analyst roles such as product analyst or business analyst. Early work with real customers and data is the strongest proof for employers. (reported — check with the official body)
  4. Step 4 · After graduation (optional, but common)An MBA with a product management focus, entered through CAT and a business school's selection process. Many senior product roles prefer this, but it is not compulsory.
  5. Step 5 · First jobApply for Associate Product Manager or junior product manager roles. Many companies hire fresh graduates into these openings, and some hire from campus.
  6. Step 6 · A few years inMove up to Product Manager, then Senior Product Manager or Director. Progress depends on results and the trust of your team, not on a fixed exam.

What people earn

Pay varies widely. Entry-level roles pay far less than senior product roles, and pay also differs between start-ups, large tech firms and banks, and between cities.

Myth and fact

Myth: You must be a expert coder to become a product manager.
Fact: Many product managers do not write code. Their main work is understanding customers, setting priorities and working with engineers, though a basic technical understanding helps a lot.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Pick one app you use every day. Write down three things you would improve and why, in half a page.
  • Class 10–12Join a school club and lead a small project, such as a survey of what students want from the canteen or library. Note what people asked for and how you chose what to do first.

Good to know

  • There is no licence or government exam for this job. Entry depends on your degree, internships, interviews and any projects you can show.
  • Many product roles ask for some earlier experience in software, analysis, sales or marketing. Freshers often start as analysts or APMs.
  • Job titles mean different things at a start-up, a large tech firm and a bank. Read the job description before you apply.
  • CAT is held once a year. Check the official CAT website for the current year's dates before planning an MBA.
