What the work is like
Guarding borders, airports, metro and industrial sites, government buildings and sensitive installations. You may also help with law and order and operations in troubled areas, depending on the force. The forces are BSF, CISF, CRPF, SSB, ITBP, SSF and Assam Rifles, where the post is called Rifleman (GD).
A day in the work
A CISF constable at an airport might start with a briefing, then spend hours at a checkpoint screening bags and people, staying alert and polite. A BSF or ITBP constable on a border post may go on patrol, stand night watch and maintain weapons and equipment. Every day also has drills, fitness training and paperwork. Duty hours can be long and shifts can change, and you often live in barracks away from family.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 8–10Build running and general fitness early. Height cannot be changed, so check the height standards (170 cm for men and 157 cm for women in the 2026 notice, with relaxations for some groups). Pass Class 10.
- Step 2 · After Class 10, age 18–23Register on ssc.gov.in and apply online when the notice comes out. The 2026 notice (published 1 December 2025) took applications for one month. The age limit was 18–23 on 1 January 2026, with extra years for SC/ST, OBC and ex-servicemen. The fee was ₹100, and women and SC/ST candidates paid nothing. Keep your domicile or PRC certificate and category certificates ready. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · Computer Based ExaminationA computer-based test with four parts: reasoning, general knowledge and awareness, elementary maths, and English or Hindi. The 2026 test was held from 27 April to 30 May 2026. It had 80 questions for 160 marks in 60 minutes (reported). SSC shortlists candidates for the physical tests based on this score. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · PET and PST (physical tests)The forces run these at their centres. First comes a timed race. In the 2026 notice, men ran 5 km in 24 minutes and women ran 1.6 km in 8½ minutes (reported). Then height, chest (for men) and weight are measured. There is no appeal against the race result. SSC published the 2026 PET/PST shortlist in October 2026.
- Step 5 · Medical and document checkCandidates who clear PET/PST go for a Detailed Medical Examination (DME) and Document Verification. A Review Medical Examination (RME) can follow if you appeal. Certificates for age, category, domicile or relaxations are checked closely here. Wrong or missing papers can end your candidature.
- Step 6 · Final merit list and force allocationSSC makes the final merit list from those who clear PET/PST and the medical. It then allots a force using your marks, category, state vacancies and the force preferences you filled in.
- Step 7 · Training and probationYou join your force and do basic training at its training centre. After that comes a probation period and your first posting. Length and place differ by force, so check your appointment letter. We could not confirm these details on an official page. (reported — check with the official body)
Your real chances
In the 2026 exam, about 21.57 lakh candidates appeared in the computer test for 25,487 posts. Around 1.97 lakh were shortlisted for the physical tests (reported, from SSC result data).

Everyone starts at the same pay level, but take-home changes with allowances for the posting (remote, border or high-altitude areas pay more), years of service and promotions within the force.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Women have their own vacancies (2,020 of the 25,487 posts in 2026, reported). Their height standard is 157 cm, and no chest measurement is taken. Height and chest relaxations apply to ST candidates and some regional groups, and age relaxations apply to SC/ST, OBC and ex-servicemen. A woman who is pregnant at the time of the physical tests is held as temporarily unfit and re-tested six weeks after delivery. The notice does not describe separate disability relaxations for the physical tests.

Good to know
- The list of forces can change from year to year. The 2026 SSC notice names BSF, CISF, CRPF, ITBP, SSB and SSF, plus Rifleman (GD) in Assam Rifles. Some other SSC pages and earlier notices also mention NIA or the Narcotics Control Bureau. Always read that year's notice.
- Dates, vacancies and age limits change every cycle. The figures here are from the 2026 exam. Watch ssc.gov.in for the next notice.
- You can be posted far from home, including border or remote areas. Think about this with your family before you apply.
- For other ways into similar uniformed jobs, see CAPF tradesman posts, Agniveer, state police and the Railway Protection Force.
