What the work is like

Studying the economy and helping shape policy, supervising banks and other lenders, managing currency and payment systems, and compiling and analysing data. The exact job depends on your department and posting.

A day in the work
You reach your RBI office in the morning and go through emails and data reports. A supervision officer might read a bank's financial statements and prepare questions for the bank's managers. A research officer might update a chart on inflation or growth for a policy note. After lunch there are meetings with seniors and other departments, then drafting notes and circulars. The work is desk-based and detail-heavy, and a deadline can mean staying late.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 9–12Any stream works. Read the business pages of a newspaper, get comfortable with percentages and graphs, and build your English writing. Maths and Economics help, but they are not compulsory for the General stream.
  2. Step 2 · Graduation, 3+ yearsFinish a degree in any subject. For the General stream you need 60% in the degree (50% for SC/ST/PwBD if the post is reserved for them), or 55% in a master's. Marks are counted across all semesters, so keep your grades steady from the first year.
  3. Step 3 · Apply onlineApply on the RBI opportunities portal when the notice is out. In 2026 the form was open from 29 April to 20 May (reported). 4. Step 4 · Phase-IAn online objective test. In 2026 it was held on 13 June for the General stream, and on 14 June for DEPR and DSIM. It screens candidates for Phase-II.
  5. Step 5 · Phase-IIIn 2026, General-stream candidates sat Paper I, II and III online on 25 July. They had to attend all papers in all shifts. DEPR and DSIM have their own papers on 26 July, some written.
  6. Step 6 · Interview and checksShortlisted candidates are interviewed. Documents, marks, age and category claims are then checked, along with medical fitness (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  7. Step 7 · Training and probationYou join as an officer on probation. Early training is at an RBI staff college, and probation is about 2 years and can be extended (reported). You then take up a posting in your cadre: General, DEPR or DSIM. (reported — check with the official body)
