What the work is like

Watching sales, stock and returns on marketplace and brand websites; writing product listings and checking prices; planning discounts and platform ads; working with logistics partners and customer care; reporting results to senior managers.

A day in the work
The day usually starts with checking overnight orders, sales and stock levels on the marketplace dashboard. Next, the manager looks at weak listings, out-of-stock items and poor reviews, and calls the logistics partner about late deliveries. Afternoons go to planning a discount or ad campaign with the marketing team and checking how last week's campaign did. The day ends with a short report for the business head and a plan for tomorrow's listing updates.

  5. Step 5 · First job (0–3 years)Start as an e-commerce executive or specialist with a seller team, a brand or a logistics-linked firm, and learn listings, ads and order flow from the ground up.

Pay depends on the size of the company, the city and whether you work for a marketplace seller, a big brand or a start-up. It rises a lot with experience and proven sales results, and there is no fixed public pay scale.

Myth and fact

Myth: You need an MBA from a top college to become an e-commerce manager.
Fact: Most employers look for a business, marketing or related degree plus hands-on work with online selling. An MBA can help later, but it is not a must for everyone.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Pick one online shop you use often. Write down how it shows price, offers, delivery time and returns, then list three things you would improve.
  • Class 10–12Watch a few lectures of a free NPTEL e-business course to see how online selling and supply chains fit together. You do not need to take the paid exam.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • No regulator licenses this job. Anyone can use the title, so your results, portfolio and platform skills count for a lot.
  • Platform rules, ad tools and delivery systems change often. Plan to keep learning every year.
  • Many people reach this role by working up from an executive or specialist post, not by joining at the top.
  • Business and marketing skills matter as much as tech. Analytics, pricing and customer care are core parts of the job.
