It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Early mornings, evenings, weekends and travel for matches and camps

What the work is like

Planning training, teaching skills and fitness, picking and guiding teams, taking players to matches, tracking progress, and looking after players' safety. The work is at SAI centres, state sports bodies, schools, colleges, clubs and private academies.

A day in the work
You reach the ground early, often before school or college starts, and set up cones, equipment and the day's plan. You run drills, correct a player's technique and push the group through fitness work. After the session you note who is improving, talk to injured players or worried parents, and plan the next week's training. On match or camp days you may travel with the team and be away from home for days.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 7–12Pick one sport and play it seriously. Compete at school, district and state level. Your sports record decides most of your marks for the coaching diploma later. NSNIS's short certificate course asks for at least a top-three place at an inter-school district championship, or similar.
  2. Step 2 · After Class 12 · 3–4 yearsDo a B.P.Ed (Bachelor of Physical Education) or a sports-coaching or physical-education degree. NCTE recognises the B.P.Ed, and it is the usual qualification for a school PE teacher. Many institutes now offer it as a 4-year course after Class 12. LNIPE Gwalior takes students through CUET and a fitness test, and asks for about 50% in Class 12 (reported). A new 4-year ITEP in Physical Education is proposed in NCTE's 2025 draft rules (draft only). (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · During collegeKeep competing. For the NSNIS Diploma in Sports Coaching, the usual entry (Category B) needs a graduation degree plus a sports record. That means a Senior Nationals, Khelo India University Games or All India Inter-University Games appearance. Or two appearances at Junior/Youth Nationals or Khelo India Youth/School Games.
  4. Step 4 · Apply to NSNIS · about age 21+Apply online to the Diploma in Sports Coaching. In 2026-27 the last date was 23 April 2026. Applicants must be 21–45 years old. Selection uses marks for education, sports achievements, an interview and theory tests. You must also pass a physical fitness test before you can join. Only top international sportspersons (Olympics, World Championships and so on) can enter with just Class 12.
  5. Step 5 · The diploma yearTrain in your chosen sport at an SAI centre. Official notices ask for at least 85% attendance each semester and a two-month internship (2025-26 notice). Hostel places depend on availability.
  6. Step 6 · Government coach recruitmentIn 2026 SAI advertised 323 Assistant Coach posts in 26 sports. These need a diploma from NSNIS or an equivalent. The upper age limit was 30. Selection was a computer-based test (about 40% weight) plus a Coaching Ability Test (about 60%). Postings can be anywhere in India. Posts come up only when SAI advertises them. (reported — check with the official body)
  7. OptionalM.P.Ed, or M.Sc Sports Coaching at NSNIS Patiala (40 seats). You can also coach in schools, state sports departments, clubs and private academies, which usually hire on their own terms.

Ways in

  • Player-to-coach routePlay at state or national level, graduate, then do the NSNIS Diploma in Sports Coaching. Then apply for SAI Assistant Coach posts, state sports bodies or academies. This works best if you start playing early.
  • School PE teacher routeDo a B.P.Ed after Class 12 (NCTE-recognised), then apply for PE teacher posts in schools. NCTE's rules treat a B.P.Ed graduate as qualified for secondary-level PE teaching. You can coach the school teams from there. State and school rules on PE posts differ.
  • University sports-coaching degree or PG diplomaSome sports universities offer B.Sc/M.Sc or PG Diploma in Sports Coaching. SAI's 2026 notice listed some of these as equivalent to the NSNIS diploma (reported). Check the notice for the exact list.

Your real chances

In 2026, SAI advertised 323 Assistant Coach posts across 26 sports (reported). That is only about 12 posts per sport on average, nationwide. I could not find how many people applied.

What people earn

Official pay

SAI Assistant Coach: Pay Matrix Level 6, ₹35,400–₹1,12,400, plus allowances (reported, from the 2026 SAI advertisement as covered by news). I could not open the SAI notice itself, so check sportsauthorityofindia.nic.in. Private and school coaches are paid by their employer and the pay can be much lower or higher.

Earnings vary a lot: a government coach in a regular post has a steady pay scale, while school, club and academy coaches earn according to the employer, the city, and how many students or athletes they train; coaches whose players win medals usually earn more over time.

Myth and fact

Myth: You must be an Olympic medallist to become a coach.
Fact: No. For the NSNIS diploma, most students enter in Category B with a graduation degree and national-level participation, not necessarily a medal. SAI's Assistant Coach posts asked for a coaching diploma from NSNIS or an equivalent.

For girls and students with disabilities

NSNIS takes para-athletes in notified para-sports (Para-Athletics, Para-Badminton, Para-Shooting, Para-Swimming, Para-Archery, Para-Table Tennis) with fitness tests adapted to each classification. It gives 5 years' upper age relaxation to SC/ST/OBC candidates, and Category C for North-East candidates. The 2026 SAI Assistant Coach notice reportedly had a 33% horizontal reservation for women in each sport and a lower application fee for women (reported).

Good to know

  • The NSNIS diploma is not open to anyone straight after Class 12 in practice. Only top international sportspersons qualify with Class 12. Others need a graduation degree and a sports record. So most students start with a B.P.Ed or similar degree.
  • NSNIS also runs a short certificate course in sports coaching for Class 12 pass students with a district-level sports record. The notice says it is being restructured into a four-week course. It earns extra marks in diploma selection.
  • If you are not a high-level player, you can still coach at school, club and grassroots level. A B.P.Ed is the usual qualification for that.
  • Job numbers can change every year. Check the SAI and NSNIS websites for the latest dates, age limits and vacancies.
